in the last couple of seasons the club has moved away from the model which got us relegated which was basically short term deals and loans and have allowed Robins to build something a bit more stable.
My worry is that this has been funded by the Checkatrade win and last seasons FA cup and play off games and that without that extra cash they revert back.
If they don't and allow him to carry on building then there's no reason we can't challenge next season.

Nope, have said all season, we would finish mid-table this season. Think we will be a much better team next season with or without the players you say. A year's experience for the young players, as well as a couple of additions, can see us fighting for play off's/auto's next year. We aren't far off being a good team as it is. Just lack consistency No player is irreplaceable and we are making good links with teams in higher divisions, to be able to get some good loans

I am not really sure this season could be classed as a missed opportunity to be fair as there is still 19 games to go for us and we don't know what will happen for sure yet,at the start of this season i sort of said i would be happy consolidating in the league with a mid table finish,i would still be happy with that,however if playoff's came along again,i would love it.

Losing Sterling and Thomas would be a big loss but it is inevitable due to them being loaned,i kinda hope that maybe we could make Thomas a permanent signing in the summer if we can agree something with Derby,losing Willis,Bayliss and maybe Davies as well on top would be massive and Robin's would have his work cut out for sure.

It’s definitely not a case of missed opportunity, getting relegated would be the missed opportunity to consolidate a position in the league and look appealing in the summer transfer market to recruit again for the following season.

Too many pieces are missing to be a creditable play off candidate.

You've got to give up on the play offs the day after a defeat.

You only talk about them the day after a victory when they're nailed on - They're the rules!!

I have said since quite early on that if we don’t go up it will be a missed opportunity, massively.
I don’t believe in the ‘too soon to go up’ thing - we need to get back up.
I don’t think we would go backwards next season but we need to keep the momentum going.
I think on our day we are as good as anyone in the top six so need to, especially with the contract situations with our players.

We’re in a position to keep most of our best players, with the exception of Willis and Burge, I doubt both will leave.

Thomas has a lot of potential, but in terms of end product, needs to improve and losing him at the end of the season isn’t the end of the world. Sterling has been great too, and will be missed. This said, new season and a new budget, there’s no reason we couldn’t get experienced players in those positions.

To be frank, if we need Sterling and Thomas to get promoted, we’re not in a position to get promoted, or even stay up in the Championship.

Back-to-back promotions is extremely rare. Looking at what Luton have done, they’ve built their squad for a good few years. Teams like Doncaster and Portsmouth doing well this year needed a season to consolidate in League 1.

Most of our squad is under contract, and we have a good foundation to improve going into next season. On the playing side of things, there’s no indication we’re in a bad place.

Again, context is everything, is it realisitic for us to go from relegation to League 2 to Championship in 2 years? It’s not. How many players are at the club from then? 3 players spring to my mind and feel free to add to this; Jones, Burge and Willis. That’s a lot of upheaval in the squad over two seasons — we need stability and to build on this crop of young players.

Ideally, I would love us to get back-to-back promotions, but to say it’s an ‘opportunity missed’ is an exaggeration.

Get in first with doom and gloom ready for a bump next season? This season does not hinge on promotion at all. This season is going just fine. People leaving or joining is pure speculation to ramp up your own little drama.

It's going just fine ?! Really, it's not a disaster no but teams have games in hand over us and we still can't score freely or prevent the opposition scoring { 6/32 clean sheets}. Our two best players are not actually ours either. We haven't got anywhere to play next year by the way but still everything's rosy in the garden. I think we will finish around 12th and with the money that was actually invested this term is that great ?! I agree as well unless Callum goes for a fortune then our budget will take a hit for next year.

It’s way too soon for us to go up, promotion from L2 was possibly too soon for some of our players who could of done with another year at that level, however promotion we thankfully secured and were ticking over just about ok to consolidate or place in the league with just 12 points on average to seal that for next year to then again add to the squad to step up another level.

Would you honestly not fear for the bulk of the contracted players we have and size of the rebuild required or budget required to even get survival in the championship with the quality of players required to achieve that over last summer coming from L2 and next summer to prepare for the championship.
The turn around is far too tight.

Promotion at this stage scraping through the play offs would be hugely damaging as I see a guaranteed relegation rooted to the foot of the championship in 12 months time.

Foundations need building to achieve and sustain yet we’re reliant on two loans this season being the difference week after week largely.

This current squad needed enhancing a lot and deals being done trading and moving on current players to reach the required level to be reliable and consistent even before a ball was kicked this season.

also all well and good saying we build like pompey but no guarantees we do that. bayliss will prob be sold. sterling and thomas wont stay unless we are in championship next season as that is the logical next step in their development


doesnt mean we SHOULD go up but cannot understand anyone who genuinely cant see why cov fans would be frustrated at being just out of the playoff picture.
