Say as Rudoni and Sheaf are back fully fit after the international break what would your midfield 3 be going forward?

It would be really harsh to drop Allen after yesterday but I think a midfield of Torp Rudoni and Grimes has a really nice balance to it. If Sheaf can get back to his best it’s going to be real selection head ache.

Allen can’t be dropped
He’s ahead of sheaf and eccles on merit
And when he plays with grimes Torp has the freedom to look forward

Where was Sheaf yesterday? I’m assuming he’s injured again?
Torp, Rudoni and Grimes is probably best but we’ve got some good options. I thought Eccles looked decent higher up yesterday too…albeit he wasn’t on for very long.
Sounds like Kai Andrews may feature next year too. Good times!

Grimes, Torp and Rudoni are my favourites and probably the better players but no complaints if Allen is in playing as he did. He's ahead of Eccles and sicknote now that's for sure.

Yes, Allen has to start at Sheff Utd as does the rest of the starting 11. Allen gives the team energy & movement and it seemed to push Tats & MVE yesterday and the 3 of them never gave Sunderland any time or space, Torp & Grimes were the same. Even EMC & JDS were better harrying & defensively yesterday although after JDS was left out of position which lead to 1 of Sunderland's only shots in the 2nd half Kitching was constantly talking to JDS.

Depends on who we play.

Allen obviously deserves to keep his place right now. He has struggled against more physical sides before at times, mind. Outmuscled and knocked off the ball a bit too easily.

So, I would say it depends on who we play at the time.

You can play Sheaf and Grimes together at the base of midfield but that would require both full backs to be playing high up the pitch. My favoured would be the one suggested, but if you’re anticipating a battle in the middle then Allen comes in for one of Rudoni/Torp.

Personally it would probably be:

Grimes
Allen Rudoni

Harsh on Torp as he’s been great but just think Allen gives us a real energy and allows more freedom from Rudoni. Also means we have a great bench option for any of them in Torp

Sheaf needs proper recovery . Whatever has happened this year, we need to get to the bottom of. Would give him a run out in the U21s to get his fitness and get him ready for the end of the season hopefully.

Eccles is another decent option.

Playing Torp and Rudoni together is going to require one of them to do all of the defensive work that Allen did yesterday. I’m not sure it’ll work.

In that case, we just not play Rudoni. Harsh on who ever gets dropped out the three at least based on yesterday.

I hear you it was the pressing and awareness that I don’t think Rudoni or Torp do
As I said on another thread Frank played through the middle way more with Hajis pace and if Rudoni comes back wow we will be so well balanced going forward

As much as people become obsessed with individuals it's more about team balance and I don't see Grimes, Torp and Rudoni in a 3 especially in the tougher games.

Not 'deserving' to get dropped is pretty irrelevant. I suspect he'll be keen to get Rudoni in as soon as he's fit because he's been brilliant for quite some time.

As others have said would depend on who we're playing, but I'd love it to be Grimes, Torp, Rudoni.

Not sure how much that might hamper the cohesion so you may have to accept Torp dropping out for someone like Allen.

Sure Burnley would be delighted with the control of the midfield they could have

Fair question as to whether he’ll ever get fit and on form but fit and on form he’s in ahead of Allen for me.

I’d like to see Grimes-Torp-Rudoni at some point but for the next game, you really can’t drop any of the midfielders.

The way Lampard plays, he needs a Duracell bunny in the team to cover the huge spaces between the lines that we leave. Allen is the man for this specific role. At some point, we will need to upgrade here but look, Allen deserves a new contract because he’s played very well.

I believe Lampard will have a plan for Sheaf as I don’t see us selling him (unless he forces a move) when we can exercise a year option for him. His value will have tanked.

Games will come thick and fast so change will be necessary. Rudoni will get his chance again once fit. But right now, you can’t change that midfield 3 from Saturday.

The midfield options are very strong.
Grimes, Rudoni, Torp and the valuable Allen.

Sheaf and Eccles as backup/ rotation.

On a slight tangent, I hope BTA gets fit. He isn't outstanding and but he could be an important player to have around in final few games.

I agree. The first three pick themselves, but the way Allen was in January (and then unfairly dropped out in my opinion) and also again this week makes you really want him to be in the team. Wright will get most of the attention for scoring 3 goals, but I would argue Allen put in one of the best performances for a midfielder I have seen in a long time.

I said before that Sheaf was 5th choice and got laughed at by a lot of people, but I don't see how he gets in the team above any of the others. It seems common sense at this stage that we are better without him. I'm not sure they'll be that many suitors so he can be moved on for a desirable price, so probably he will stay, but let's see. Eccles will have to wait patiently now as well.

A special shout out to Grimes, he plays with this real arrogance that I like. He knows he can do almost anything, and always wants to be the first to get involved. Constantly showing up and never hiding.

Torp, Rudoni, Grimes with Sheaf replacing Grimes if he needs to come off and Allen replacing either of the other two if needed.

Anyone who gets a wrap on the ankle must go down with a shriek, with half team coming over to complain and to check on the 'rolling' patient. Start it early... before they do!

I’ve wondered this too. Will anyone be actually interested in taking him in the summer?
If we’ve got an option to keep him an extra year, as was said on here, I’d say our midfield next season is incredibly strong.

Unless of course we go up, then it’s shit.

This does make perfect sense.

Obviously we cant just ignore Eccles completely. Latibeaudiere can also be called upon if needed for defensive midfield duties.
On paper / computer screen it looks very good.

Grimes has barely missed a minute throughout his career so it’s unlikely he’d ever need to come off
