Smith is 22 and knows how to score. Would be a good signing. Problem is that Swindon will know we got good money for Wilson and will use that against us.

Still think we need to replace Wilson's pace up front though.

This is why transfer fees should always be 'undisclosed'

WOW! On the weekend our manager is linked with another job, we've suddenly got money to spend on transfer fees.:thinking about:

The Wilson fee was undisclosed.

Coventry City are seemingly looking at other striking targets after failing to land Swindon Town's Michael Smith.
Robins' chairman Lee Power revealed last night that the club had rejected two bids from the Sky Blues for the 22-year-old 6ft 4in target man, who has netted four times in two matches this season.

City would not discuss any offers for Smith but the Telegraph understands they have now switched their focus to other transfer targets as Steven Pressley looks to beef up his forward line.

Steve Waggott, development director at Coventry City, said: “We don’t like to talk about players who are contracted to another club but we have made no secret of the fact that we are actively pursuing a striker and a defender.

“That is still the case and there are funds available to Steven to pay a fee if required."
Swindon chief Power said last night: "Coventry made two offers and they weren't what we needed.
"They [goalscorers] are very hard to find so it would have to be a silly offer for us to listen."

On Monday, Pressley told the Telegraph that Smith was: "a player I admire, a good player but he's a Swindon player and we've not done anything to try to change that."

Remember the time we made a few offers for Le Fondre but our delightful owners didn't think he was worth more than £200k or something and we ended up with the dross.

Similar scenario again...make the fans believe we are after a good player then end up with some rubbish.

Wasn't that when we bought McDonald instead as he was thorn's number 1 target?

Judging by a statement Pressley made towards the end of last week (which I can't find anywhere and am thinking I may have dreamt) I'm sure he said something to the effect that the availability of a striker he was interested in had changed and we would be pursuing this at the start of this week.... This implies to me that someone made us aware Smith was available. Either Swindon touting him out or his agent doing similar possibly. I suspect Swindon are trying to cash in. I also imagine/ hope us 'moving our attention to other targets' is all part of the negotiation process.

Why again does this have to be a Thorn issue? You know where this will now be headed. The point the poster was trying to make is that with Le Fondre, we put in two bids which were described as pitiful and insulting by the chairman at the time; and history - maybe - appears to be repeating itself. It's the negotiating tactics that are being looked at here; not the wisdom of the manager with his selections at any given time

Sometime offers get rejected, it isn't a new thing

Yeah. That's true. I'm not advocating going daft. The figure Swindon are supposedly looking for is £600K. Maybe a touch less. If after picking up something reported to be close to £3m, it would be a shame if we were penny pinching on a target who has promise to improve the team, and increase in value. I am not saying I know we are, but saying that's what we were accused of with Le Fondre, and it would be - bearing in mind recent incomes - frustrating if we were doing so again

Your memory is failing I think.. they made for effort to sign Le Fondre first and Thorn statements about Cody were for media/fan consumption to justify the decision not to find the money needed

Sod that go in again. Let's get who we want not mess about ffs. We will get nowhere in this league signing 3rd/4th targets and we obviously have a reason to believe they'd sell so get in again
