One of my Pompey ST holder mates mentioned his distinct lack of pace. I know he was never the fastest but hope it isn't a big issue.

He'll add a much needed bit of steel to the team. At least we will have one player who won't be easily knocked off the ball. I hope that he will 'look after' the younger players when the bully boys from other teams start on them.

Good signing as long as it comes with another signing of a player of a similar ilk. It is very hard to play all the match and in all the matches. As an influential combatative midfielder at that age.
Not a good enough signing on its own for that nasty tough bugger role we have needed for years.

Hahaha - I actually predicted to my mate two days ago that this would happen. Not based on any evidence, just a gut feeling....maybe time to buy a lottery ticket!

so earlier in the week linked with athletic, young centre half popular with his clubs support, people moan.
Sign aging but experienced captain of last years league winners, people moan, come on FFS!! A bit of positivity!

Doyler and Bigirimana would be a good combination

Particularly if the refereeing is more lenient in Division 2

Finishing top of the league, here's a run down on the men who got us there: Michael Doyle.

MIDFIELDER

Michael Doyle (Played 46 (0 as Sub) Scored 1):

Our Rottweiler (or should that be Irish Terrier). Doyle does everything you need a holding midfielder to do.

You're never gonna get anything spectacular (unless it's a volley against Accrington), in fact, if you weren't paying full attention to the game you'd barely notice him playing. But if you watched him for 90 minutes and saw the ground he covers, and how many attacks he prevents before the even get the chance to start one, you see how good the man is.

Captain. Leader. Badass! Also, he hasn't missed a single league game since signing in 2015.

46 games last year is incredible

But he did exactly what your saying is very hard to in the season that finished less than a week ago!?

Unless he loses all fitness in the next 3 months he can do the job just fine ( awaits injury in pre-season)

He was rubbish when we first had him. Gave away needless fouls, constantly out of position and a liability. I was delighted when we finally got rid of him, he'd be hanging around like a bad smell. He's also now 36 years old.

Shows how far we've dropped though when baring all that mind (providing his wages are small and not stopping us from signing someone younger and technically better) it could be a good signing.

Fuck me, League two.

I was slightly disappointed when I first heard the news but looking at his stats you have to say it's a decent signing. Captain of the champions without missing a game is great. Robins is starting early which is great.

I said the other day leave the past in the past if we are to energise and go forward. Doyle was like Marmite during his time with us.
Mediocre at best and now age is catching up. Not where I would be putting my money if I was MR's tbh. Sentiment will not get the job done.

Glad there's a rational post in this thread. I was beginning to think I was recollecting the wrong Michael Doyle!

Just because you agree with a post doesn't make it rational and ones you don't agree with irrational. Silly sausage.

The notion Doyle is some kind of maurading hard man is a myth. He rarely makes a tackle - he's just an harasser and has high energy and fitness.

Anyone think if we signed him last summer and made him captain with his character that it could of kept us up? We really lacked a leader

What I find confusing is that so many of you have been calling for a complete clear out of our kids because we need 'old nasty buggers who know the league'..??

Is Doyle not close to perfect fit of this? Will also be a good mentor for bigi and kids

I think you will find that Hammer Gilbert is the nickname they have for him round the Telegraph offices.

Could be of course it's because they just want to hit him all the time.

And bragging about clicks. It's the equivalent of a dustman bragging about how many bins he's emptied today.

Not the greatest of footballers, but alongside a technical playmaker it would work well.

The thought of Bigi/Stevenson and Doyle pairing is a positive one, bearing in mind we are now a L2 team, he's just won that league and (in my view) Bigi/Stevenson are both better than L2.

As long as he's told not to pass it any further than ten yards and do nothing but harass the opposition and "manage" the game.

Bar their GK he played the most minutes (as captain) in the best team in the league that we will be playing in. I cant understand how its even a remotely bad signing.

For the people saying he was crap last time round, he left us, what, 8 years ago? why can't he have improved in 8 years?
It's the Coventry City way. They are crap for us, then go elsewhere and do really well and then come back to us and go back to being crap again.

Water under the bridge, i know, but if we'd kept Vincelot at least, it may have been a different story.

Didn't like Doyle as a player for us, apart from that short spell with Dennis Wise, however I'll reserve judgement until seeing him play.

Good old Doyle. I've missed his kicking player skills. Just what we need to show the kids how to get stuck in. Old bones tho. Must be getting close to his pension, so maybe got him on the cheap. We're only L2 so it's all good.
