Media darling clubs (1 Viewer)

Yesterdays media spaff over Sunderland "one of the biggest clubs in England" coupled with my complete apathy towards them made me wonder what other clubs fit this bill. Clubs you don't particularly like or hate but the media loves and you don't see the fuss. Mine is between Everton and Chelsea. Top of my head can only name 1 Chelsea player in Cole Palmer

It ebbs and flows @Macca

Next season in our league will be Wrexham and Blues.

I've no particular beef with either, but my god, they're gonna be in the news.

The media have always had a huge thing for North East teams generally, hyping them beyond what you'd expect considering their achievements down the years.

At least part of it is down to the undeniably large support that clubs from the region garner. I don't think people there are particularly any more into football than anywhere else, but it's quite an isolated region with a strong sense of identity (and when I lived there - a good while ago now - quite insular in its outlook), so people tend to support their local clubs; you don't see Man United or Arsenal tops in Newcastle or Sunderland. Newcastle and Sunderland (and to a lesser extend Middlesbrough) are all big, but big in their own back yard.

It does stick in the craw somewhat, especially as football in the Midlands tends to be derided, despite, in my lifetime, Midlands clubs being generally more successful than those from the NE.

One thing the hype and large local support has done, is make NE supporters unreasonable in their expectations. It took blood money for Newcastle to win something, and Sunderland have always bounced around the top three divisions. They might enjoy supporting their clubs more if they paid less attention to the media hype.

Yep you have to say their achievements don't live up to the hype

Frank Lampard’s Coventry City will enjoy disproportionate amounts of media coverage for as long as he’s here.
I agree, FL has been lauded by the media for what he has done this season (and rightly so) but they're same feat by Robins 2 seasons ago wasn't given half as much attention. Middlesbrough got all the plaudits for coming from low down to 4th, even though our achievement was better as we started below them and beat them numerous times. However, that was ignored (even during our head to head games) and they received the plaudits. FL has done something similar to what Robins did 2 years ago and gets wanked off.

Every time we’re on Sky we always seem to be the ‘other’ team. They’ll usually have 1 or 2 ex players from the opposition, but rarely anyone from us.

Sunderland and West Brom always seem to be Sky favourites, and we’re just there to make up the numbers 😁
If we get Clinton Morrison we are lucky.

This just isn’t true. Sky seem to love us atm.

On Talksport it’s Manchester United when that Goldstein is on I know he is a fan but it’s every day

Unless we play a team that a player has played for both clubs (recently comes to mind George Boateng when we played Boro)

Though that said, I'm sure i remember seeing McSheffery on some game or another a few months back. And Clinton Morrison is a regular tbf.

I think that's mostly because for whatever reason we don't have that many ex players on the pundit circuit

It’s whoever gets them the most clicks

Yeah, pretty much.

BBC Sport constantly do articles on Man United and the comments section is always full of "why are these posts always about this team and not others?", etc...

I do agree that it would be nice to have more attention in the lower leagues, but clearly Man United bring in a lot of attention as a club with a huge fan base, and so with that and the commenters visiting the page to complain, it's not really surprising is it there's a constant cycle

Sky will be utterly devastated Sunderland are out of the EFL so they cannot force the 'Long suffering amazing fanbase' narrative down our throats any more - It's been even worse since Newcastle's takeover and their fans turned into Amnesty International and Human Rights experts despite the fact 90% of them would drop their knickers in a flash if an oil rich sheikh from the middle east wanted to take them over

The fuss over Birmingham and Wrexham will be extremely nauseating next season

Sky were absolutely desperate for Luton to beat us in that final and go up as well

Oh how could I forget Leicester as well - The ultimate media darling club cause of 2016 despite the fact they have been financially bent for years and still are

Does anyone honestly care?

As long as we win games, whether we are on TV or not is all that matters
