Apologies for creating a new thread, i've not had access to the internet and cant be bothered to trawl through all the threads... Has anything further been said since fri about mcgoldrick being the potential striker target!? I think he'd be a gamble wirth taking. Similar to fleck and barton in that he was very highly rated a couple of years ago!

Agreed, think he's a player who'd improve us, but no there haven't been any more posts about him lately.

10 goals in the last 3 seasons (67 games), yeah, he'd fit in here

It's why we might be able to get him. He's not just a striker, he's played wide right and in the hole, and a lot of those appearances were as sub. He'd be a better wide-right option than anyone in the squad, and in terms of choosing a striker, who would you rather have: him, or ROD or Jeffers?

Again: perspective. We are where we are, and IMO he would improve the squad.

Alot of those games he has been a subsitute.
Also a striker should not be judged simply by his goal ratio.
Some strikers do better at other clubs and at this level if we got him confident and was in a winning side he would do a good job and good foil with cody

I know that a striker shouldnt always be judged on goals, however Cody is the only striker we have who scores goals, Elliot doesn't, ROD doesn't, Ball doesn't, Jeffers doesn't. We either need a winger or a striker. If we need a winger we should sign a winger, if we want a striker at least get one who has some sort of record (e.g a Beavon, etc).

But we're 3rd division now. Any such player will be in demand elsewhere, at a higher level, with better wages.

Andy Williams scored 17 last season - how much did he cost Swindon? James Collins scored 16 last season how much did Swindon pay for him? McCleod scored 22 last season how much did Portsmouth pay for him?

I know exactly what the situation is I'm not expecting to splash out big money.

You do know that 2/3 of those were linked with us but signed elsewhere when we were under embargo? And McCleod is probably on more money at Pompey than we could pay. You know what Pompey are like for splashing the cash they don't have!

My forest mate reckons he wont get much of a look in for them but thinks back in League 1 he would score goals , has apparently looked very sharp in pre-season

I would be happy with him here as I agree that he will improve us.

Exactually the type of player we have to take a risk on as we just don't have the cash to go buy a proven goal scorer of form.

Yeah I am aware of that and we missed out in some decent players. Just makes me laugh that when there was a suggestion of billy Paynter everyone poo poo'd it yet think that a player who scored 33 goal's in 190+ appareances will bang them in 'in this league'.

Agree - Lee Barnard seems to be joining Bournemouth on loan from Southampton until Jan. Strike rate of 1 in every 1.5 - 2 games in Div 3 for Southampton and Southend. Missed opportunity for me as minimal risk.

"He's got pace, he can get in behind defenders and can run all day. He's skilful and he's got all the attributes."
—Bournemouth captain Steve Fletcher on McGoldrick in March 2007.[1]

5 years ago Michael Owen still had pace....

This isnt a criticism of McGoldrick, I want us to sign him, as he would improve the squad, just pointing out that just because it was once said he had pace, it doesnt mean he still does

Yh but from 19 to 24 you don't tend to lose your pace, maybe from 24 to 29 like macca

Whatever merits he has he does not seem to be a goalscorer. We need one badly. The present squad is not going to get the goals required.

Based on our current success rate with strikers, having anybody in the squad that can possibly score goals is a bonus.
