Agree with all of that as long as the experienced players contributed and added to the starting eleven

Absolutely, which is why IMO we kept Kelly 1 season longer than we should have. McFadz was essentially a key player until last season, when he left he was 36.

As cover i'm all for this, if he is being brought in as a starter for most games then i'm less so.

Jesus we have some post window revisionism going on here.

Let’s be honest if we had signed James early in the window as our new midfielder we would all have been underwhelmed.

I can totally understand King saying no we can buy better and younger. We would all have thought we could.

However now that we haven’t and the window is shut and Sheaf has highlighted what we are missing I think James would be an ok stop gap but that’s it.

Like I said earlier Brighton signed Milner , Welbeck and Veltman who still start regularly.
Wouldn't want an old head who's good in the dressing room or in training but useless on the pitch

He would play a similar role to Sheaf in the team so even if we win Sheaf is a better player when fit.

Actually got some solid info on this

Was explored back in July but of course we had other targets

First contact made Thursday after it became clear Kasey was leaving, James is keen, would love to come back and play in front of Cov fans as didnt during Covid. Still speaks regularly to Sheaf and Eccles.

Doesn't want silly money, we would be looking around 12 -15 a week, 1 year deal with another in clubs favour

Robins is very keen and wants to get it done, Doug blocked it as he "doesn't fit the model".

The poor performance of Saturday happened, Robins has stated again he wants him. James still keen, kept himself fit and is ready to go.

Big test for me this I feel. If James comes in it shows Robins really does still hold the reins.

If he doesnt, that would point to Doug being the man with more say on transfers than Robins

In my view anyway. I'm sure il be told I hate Doug etc

We shouldn't stick rigidly to the model. Bassette fits the model but it's not a position where we needed another player. We're not a finishing school for young players. We have to succeed in a competitive league

Bassette makes sense as succession planning for Simms. Assuming that Simms’ form recovers of course…

Bassette was signed as we think he will be worth much, much more in a couple of years and it was get him now at a cheap price or someone velse gets him later.

A number are saying King called it wrong … I think he called it right at the time.

decision making is situational. Our situation has now changed. Changing the decision is ok.

He’d probably start when Sheaf is not available to be fair. Feel like we are really missing someone to sit in front of the back 4. Will mean that we can pick 2 out of Eccles Torp and Rudoni for the other 2 positions.

Even when Sheaf is available he’s someone who would be useful to bring on for 20 mins at the end to see a game out

I mean King was presumably willing to sign off on Browne who wouldn’t be a money spinner either, so would struggle to understand his aversion to this just on those grounds.

I dont doubt the gist of saddles post but things have maybe been presented in a certain way. As you say, Browne was stepping outside ‘the model’ and I’ve already posted about ‘aversion to loans’, we had two last year that didn’t play regularly and tried to sign another one this summer. Parent clubs won’t allow young players to come and sit on the bench and I doubt king wants to chuck money down the drain on them either. If they can start great, if not, better to avoid otherwise we’re investing money, time and effort to solely benefit parent clubs

Flip the Bassette signing for a minute.
Sheaf and Wright are two of the most likely players to leave next summer if we don't go up . So what do we do ? Sign a player we've obviously targeted to fill their position and give them a year to bed in or wait till they've gone and start from scratch ?
I think the whole Bassette has been made a way bigger deal because we missed out on a midfield target .
The Bassette deal makes long term sense

I'm not getting carried away here to the point where I'm saying Matty James is better than Sheaf, not what I said.

Point is, I don't care who is starting or finishing games but we need a squad. If we win 5 on the bounce with James starting all 5 having initially 'filled in' then great.

Makes rotation possible though when Sheaf is fit again and gives us some sort of cover if a bid comes in for Sheaf in January

No one said you did, I am simply saying he is a similar type of midfielder to Sheaf.

9 times out of 10 Sheaf would start over him.

He is also a good option to bring off the bench.

My point was not to doubt Bassette's potential at all. He's less likely to achieve that potential in a team that's losing because the midfield is struggling.

Short term deal would solve a lot of issues with the midfield , adds experience at this level too

With Sheaf history on injury's, will need more than a Short Term Deal.

Clearly if we’d signed at least Browne and perhaps Stamenic also then this conversation isn’t happening.

We could definitely do with his experience and know how, Bidwell is the only player over 30 in the squad currently.

Doug will be surprised at how fickle football fans can be when things start to go sour. One day fans are singing his name, the next he's getting accosted outside the ground.

It's clear as day we need reinforcements. Get it done.

The song makes me cringe.

If he can stay fit then get him in, even when Sheaf is back he will be good to have around.

A very useful character to have around the squad and trustworthy on the pitch in Sheaf’s absence.

The Stamenic deal falling through still has ripples. As it was so public (from RS Belgrade) we were on the verge on signing him, it became obvious to Browne he was only a 'back up' plan. The vibes were that Browne wanted to join, but then turned away when he felt slighted (understandably). We are then behind the curve with CM recruitment, took a shot at Bernede but Lausanne don't want/need to sell (owned by INEOS).
Sheaf then gets crocked and we are looking mighty thin in midfield.
We are, where we are now. But, this is an example of where the loan policy needs to be relaxed.

The Stamenic incident was really unfortunate, but it was still naive to not have proceeded with Browne regardless.
