It's a great signing dont get me wrong but CM/CDM is our most abundant position, this must be a decision purely based on quality rather than filling gaps which is something I'm not used to as a Cov fan

We are not privy to behind the scenes goings on, I liked MR and have nothing but respect for him but the management team made a decision that has so far proved correct. Take a look at some of the Stoke city media interviews with Robins, they have a certain dejavu element to them.

Just watched one of MR's post match interviews and what struck me was the difference between him and FL actually, MR (as much as I like him), points out observations of what went wrong as if no one else knew. FL talks about what he wants and how we're going to encourage that with application and building morale. Just interesting and makes we feel compared with MR, post Adi, we are now in a better place for coaching direction. Both managers are in a similar position in terms of new squads to develop, so think I prefer the strategic narrative over the post mortem approach.

Feels less of a pressing issue given the change in system and recent form of Rudoni, Torp and Allen.

But Allen isn’t long term, same with Sheaf. Any injury to any of the above and suddenly we have no means of changing it up.

Glad we finally have an addition there.

Whilst I agree to most, I've been convinced Jamie Allen was 33 since he arrived here. In reality he's only 6 months older than Grimes. He's not as good, but has shown his value in recent weeks as a ready made back up to step into the breach. Squads need players like Allen (no fuss get on with it, train hard and team player), so it will depend on his own ambitions to play regularly.

Wales online.

What is for certain, is Grimes has played his last game for the Swans, having made 333 appearances for the club over the last 10 years.

"A deal has been agreed, and the terms have been agreed," WIlliams said ahead of this weekend's clash with Frank Lampard's men. "So now it's just the matter of some official paperwork to be signed and sent back and forth to complete that transaction.

"We're sorry to see Matt leave us. He's been an incredible servant to the club. Incredible record in terms of the number of minutes he's played on the pitch and the level he's played at. But we move on.

"Having worked in football for a number of years I tend to be less surprised at things. That's the nature of the business we work in. It's extremely competitive and it's a jungle.

"So I was a bit shocked initially. But, of course, you have to move on very quickly."

Grimes stands to earn a hefty increase on his current wage package once he completes his move to the CBS Arena, with Coventry set to make the midfielder one of their top earners.

Williams says tentative conversations were held over a possible counter offer to keep him at the club. But it soon became clear that they were not going to be able to compete with the terms Coventry could offer.

"We spoke," he added. "I picked the guy for every game, and I think I only ever brought him off once because he's incredible.

"But we couldn't agree anything here and he decided another option was better for him and we were not able to convince him.

"I'm not in the correct position to talk about all of the reasons, and there are many I'm sure. If it was as simple that he wanted to play for one team or another, then that would be hurtful.

"But the reasons are more than that and it's disrespectful for me to talk about all the things that are potentially involved in his decision to move."

The value of the deal taking Grimes to the Sky Blues is understood to be between £3.5m and £4m, a valuation Williams feels represents good value for all involved.

"It's extremely good business all round. It's a very good deal for us. It's fantastic for them because he's a great player. So it's a fair deal all round."

Attention will now turn to the transfer market - and possible replacements. But it seems there has already been a decision made on who will replace Grimes as captain.

“We have Ben Cabango who will step up into the role of captain," Williams confirmed. "He is a player who has captained the club at every level he has played at, and has come through the academy.

“He is very much someone in the mould of a leader and it is his time to shine now and we move forward.

We still need a CB as well. A short term loan for a RW would be good as well as Tats hasn't looked the same this year.

I'm not personally sure that Grimes transforms this team instantly, but is a very big piece of the puzzle.

We need a better central pairing at the back if Frank wants to play 4-3-3 that is for sure. One of the four at the back we have at present has to go to make way for a new McFadz.

2 goals a game conceded thro the Autumn, I think not. That's why we have to play 3 at the back - to compensate. Kitching is the only one of the requisite standard and needs a new partner

Only if we’re signing a player who’d be considered league leading as with Grimes.

Defensively, Thomas and Kitching are an effective pairing. It’s not the best in the league but it’s certainly good enough for a team pushing playoffs.

Doesn't make any sense because Kitching hasn't been playing in the back 4 this season, and you say he's the only one at the standard required. So how do you know how a back 4 would perform with him in it?

I get the joke but Leeds seem to hate him because his mum slagged the place off after he'd been on loan there.

Would imagine Frank had him on his radar for quite a while, as a top DM/CM, and he should know. We have already seen the improvement in Allen, Rudoni & Torp since he took over. I think this could be a top, top signing. I still hope Sheaf may stay too. He needs to get back to proper fitness (no injections pre-match) and start enjoying his football again.

My interpretation of this interview is that the move is not all about the money. I think learning from Frank is a major personal driver for Matt Grimes. Thoughts?

Numbers arnt a problem, but quality wise?

I'm also expecting 2 or 3 to move on at the end of the season. Sheaf/Eccles/Allen maybe.

Not even in the same league of disrespect.

We’re comparing their captain who has played some 300 games, hardly ever injured, probably first name on the team sheet for several years etc…. with O’Hare? A player who ran his contract down was injured an awful lot, was never really consistent and only showed brief glimpses of what he could potentially achieve…..

They’ve got the thick end of £4 million for their troubles. We got fuck all.
