A footballer very much on the wain when he came to us. Rather than be the brilliant example of an experienced professional for our young strikers basically came across as a fucking mardy arse who threw his toys out of the pram because he wasn’t playing.

As he said in the interview-he knew what his role was when he joined us and as he admits-he didn’t really want to be at City.

I can image what a fucking nightmare he was for management-a bloody loose canon in a very tight knit team with great spirit-dealt with accordingly by Adi.

That’s not Oversons view of him.

I personally thought he was past it and his legs had gone and you have to blame Robins for wanting him.

Personally, i thought Waghorn sounded a bit precious and dim.
Pro football is a tough old game, and it seems he didn't handle a critical comment from Adi well at all.
Maybe using that as an excuse for playing shit for 2 years after realising he was way past his best.

It’s poor form to go about slagging off people you’ve worked with anyway but you should be particularly quiet when you were rubbish at your job.

That’s the USP of that podcast.
To be honest I think Waghorn comes across ok on that episode. He’s clearly got an ego but he says that’s precisely the character feature that has turned Gyökeres into a superstar.

He was frank about Rangers and life under different managers at Leicester. He is incredibly complimentary about Lampard at Derby - and contrasts his people skills to Rooney’s.

He says he met Robins in Derby. Agreed to sign as we needed experienced cover but clashed with AV from the start and the manager sided with the assistant. Then AV told him he was trying to get him back into the starting XI but it didn’t happen which he now thinks was an act of bad faith as AV ran the show.

I suspect it’s the sort of thing that happens all over the country at every club. He wanted to get back to Derby at the first opportunity and he eventually returned there before retiring.

Only saw the bit where he talked about Cov. Could have missed something but the massive elephant in the room is the fact that he was in serious decline. Went to Huddersfield and did nothing so it wasn’t just us. Bad signing but you don’t get them all right.

Leaving aside the wider debate about vaccines, if the management and coaches thought he was putting himself and the rest of the squad at risk, it’s not hard to see why they started to take a dim view of him given that he was one of the top earners in a thin squad. And even more so if he was acting like he wished he hadn’t joined.

Imagine proudly recounting that you told your head coach to shut up. It isn’t exactly the actions of an elder role model professional he’s claiming was his raison d'etre for being signed.

Compare his character to someone like BTA when he wasn’t starting games and that makes such a difference. I can see Waghorn being a wedge driver between the squad and the management which is when everything goes wrong.

Robins also has a top rated coach with him now at Stoke. Looking at Robins in the last couple of years it doesn't look like he spends a lot of effort on the training pitch that's for sure!

MR was never known for his tactical nous as such, but he was a great motivator and squad builder. Built his teams on having leadership figures and players who’d be good at carrying out instructions.

I just don’t think he ‘got’ the new intake of players in the way FL does.

Robins does seem to have gone back to 22/23 tactics at Stoke. They are v solid, have a good keeper and will be difficult to beat this season. My view right now is that they won’t finish in the top 4 but will end up in the playoffs.

Stoke do have a lot of money, with rich owners who are prepared to spend. I expect them to buy in January.
Robins does have a tendency to defend first when he is worried about the opposition. Thomas was very deep against us, yet is usually way up the pitch when playing lesser teams.
It was the way most teams used to win matches away from home. Keep it tight, try to hit the opposition on the break, or score from a set piece. Tire them out, then take control.
You occasionally got a team (like us under Milne), Birmingham under Jim Smith, or Peterborough under Ferguson who used to go for it, but they were few and far between.
Football changed. Way more subs, fitter better prepared players, tougher refereeing, offside rule changes, endless back passes where the goalie picked up the ball and the high press.
You do it the Burnley (boring) way or Lampard's somewhat gung ho approach.
The only real throwback team this season were Norwich at the CBS.

He has a weird accent as almost sounds a bit Yam Yam too

I don't think he's said anything too bad. We are all human and lots of people will have regretted going to a new workplace or not liked new boss.

Interesting comments on MR AV dynamic

Used him for what? He got £13k per week for being sullen and not playing.

He is but it's a team job these days, nobody is a manager anymore in the old sense. The no2 is such an essential role to get right so too the head of recruitment/scouting.

We could say the same about us and frank tbh , but it only seems to be our fans that seem to credit the 2 more than the 1

No, because the playoffs is 3-6th place… I should’ve been clearer and said I think they’ll finish 5th or 6th.

Agree with that. Very tough side to beat and that goes a long way in this league, but will probably be overtaken by Ipswich/Southampton over a full season.
