It didn't need to be a transitional season and was a missed opportunity.

This so called incremental approach is going to be very expensive if we really are following it and don't go up. Endless transitional seasons and bringing in loads of players on long contracts will catch up on us. Not all succeed and we cannot get rid of the ones who aren’t good enough. By year three we will have a mass of players who we don't want under long contracts.

Well, I’ll put it in more frank terms: we weren’t good enough to go up. Our record against the top half teams was terrible.

Signing EMC or a couple of loans wouldn’t have bridged the gap and Hull are a testament to that.

You can be as frank as you want but we were fifth at the time and beat Wolves and almost beat Manchester United. So we were good enough without a doubt. That doesn't mean it was certain but there was a good chance we would have got into the play offs.

But, we didn’t get to the playoffs because we lost to all the teams around us…

I unfortunately don’t get the time to go down the enjoyable rabbit holes of foreign player analysis and trying to identify players in the more obscure leagues, so until yesterday this wasn’t a player I had heard of.

However, there’s a few on here who have a great player analysis network (and I think do it as part of their job) - and they all seem to be excited, which is a box tick.

Second box tick is the analysis and stats I’ve read since.

So in the space of 48 hours, he’s gone from an unknown to a player I desperately want us to sign!

If you can get £15m+ for Sheaf, I don't know how you can say "No" as a Championship club.

Between that and a potential Vik windfall late in the window, the money could buy you an entire new XI of young, exciting prospects like Stamenic that position this club for a promotion push and a good core of players that will keep you up as they start hitting their prime.

For years, we talked about following the Brentford model. This is exactly how it's done.

It was quality of the depth as well rather than depth alone. I.e. Godden, Kelly, Tavares (despite some commendable appearances) weren’t good enough to make the desired impact.

It takes time to get to this. We weren’t good enough to go up last season, but slowly we are building a bigger, better quality squad. I would fancy us to have a real go this season. I think 80 points is an ambitious but realistic target.

Isn't that the same for every team that didn't get into the play offs?

The truth is we didn't have the required Quality or depth, and that's down to not having the budget that the likes of Leicester and Southampton or even Ipswich (who have multi million pound owners) have.

There's little doubt that the F.A. cup run affected our league form, but it's not the only reason. Losing Sakamoto to injury was obviously a big blow, but fatigue and individual form suffered enormously.

Just look at how many of our players were playing their first full seasons at this level, or even in this country.
And look at how many had played 40+ games in a season at this intensity. When you realise that, it's easy to see why we fell away so badly.

But we're certainly not the only team to do that, if you look at the championship form table for the last 6 games, there's some surprising teams near the bottom.

For reference, the top 6 in form teams over the last 6 games were:-

1, Millwall
2, Sheffield Wednesday
3, Middlesbrough
4, stoke
5,Swansea
6, QPR.

So IMHO, it's fair to say that bringing 1 player in (EMC) in early January wouldn't of made a huge difference to the way the league finished.

How can you say he got nothing when we spent £6-7m? That is his second highest spend in the time he’s been with us.

What ‘nothing’ looks like is having Kasey Palmer as your only permanent signing in 22/23 followed up with Sean Maguire in Jan.

Just to gently wade in on the above debate, I think we still need a lot more quality if we’re to make top 6, and ideally we should be aiming for automatics so that if we miss then at least we’ve got play-offs as a safety net.

If you look at the players that Leeds have (who obviously still didn’t make it out) the likes of Summerville, Gnoto, Bamford, Piroe, Struijk, Ampadu, Rutter etc etc, it’s an insane list of players for the championship. That’s why I personally think we need a hell of a lot more quality than the likes of Eccles, Allen, Dasilva, Collins, even Kitching and maybe Bidwell long term tbh, they can put in a shift but they’re just not good enough to beat the quality of teams like Leeds, Burnley, Luton consistently week after week.

We need much much much greater squad depth and our starting 11 should not be relying on the likes of Eccles and Allen in midfield every week, I could be proven wrong but I believe they’re not players that are going to take us into the prem.

The fact is we don't have the budget to be competing for automatic promotion.
To even compete for top 6, we need to punch above our budget, and hope a number of other clubs under achieve.

We've performed well over the last couple of seasons by recruiting exceptional well (Gyok and Hamer especially) and then sold those players on for good money which has been re-invested.

To carry that model forward we need to get the recruitment absolutely spot on, if we make errors we'll find ourselves mid table very quickly.

If we look for cheaper quality from abroad. We have to understand that those players haven't played 40 games a year at this intensity, and will inevitably have periods when they lose form and get injured, and we simply don't have the funds to carry a squad big enough to account for that.

Urgh.
