He said he was pleased with the way which we applied ourselves, which I'm not sure I agree with... I think he was fuming with the red card.

Apart from that though he's still god

Usually, Robins hits the nail on the head with his post-match comments. Today was the first time in a while I didn’t really agree.

In a sense, you’ve got to happy that we stayed in a game where we had 10 men for about an hour before grabbing the winner and nearly nicking a second goal too.

But, MK were weakened and we didn’t look good before the red card. We put ourselves under needless pressure about 6-8 times, that’s just counting a few mis-passes from Hyam, Shipley and Marosi. Better teams would absolutely punish us because I didn’t think MK brought a lot to the party minus running up the possession stat line.

He gets credit for making the right substitutes.

That’s my 2p.

Not laying into the players publicly for a rusty, sloppy, piss poor performance, but he will know we will have to be better than that for next weekend.

I trust him to get the squad ready and motivated for Bristol City.
He’s the best manager we’ve had since sir Snoz.

Tbf our discipline with 10 men was good. As is generally the rule under Robins, once we went ahead we didn't look like we'd throw it away

The MK manager bemoaned that they lost despite ‘controlling the game’. But, even going into the break, we both had 5 shots. By full time, we had more 3 more shots than them.

Our counter attacking was decent and thought we looked the more likely to score despite the red card.

All about context.
We're not quite where we want to be yet but I think we all expected that, Robins certainly did hence his comments about treating it as an extra pre-season game.

MK are actually a difficult team to play against since Russell Martin took over - I said it about the draw at St Andrews when everyone bemoaned that we only got a point.
Nevertheless, even when we were sloppy early on you could see we would create chances.

With 10 men things are even tougher, can't play our usual intensity of high press without leaving gaps & less time on the ball in the defensive third too with a back four.

Without Kelly we're a much poorer side too & MR knows this hence his introduction today & the signing of Sheaf giving us another to play that role.
With key players still to come back, we'll be a much better outfit soon enough.

We got into a groove of playing out from the back last season, and whilst Giles has the pace to get himself out of trouble, the new players - Pask, Drysdale, Ostigard plus Hamer in the middle are still adapting and look prone to errors - some looking for an extra touch. and I wonder if the hesitancy has given a twitchiness to the keeper(s). It is blindingly obvious that our keeper is looking to play a short (ish) pass, and if he does it quickly to a free man - usually no problem. Alarm bells go off with me when you see Marosi (or Wilson) looking to bowl out the ball, or with it at their feet, and changing their mind several times - the opposition are always going to then have time to close us down, increasing the danger if we do go short. Compare that with us v MK Dons today. When we had 11 men n the pitch we were letting Lewington have the ball from the keeper with no pressure at all on him, I love our brand of football, but we are going to have to be cute in those early games, because (in my opinion) we have a real tricky run after the first 3 matches (and they will be tough). Think Kelly and Sheaf will be a big bonus, as will Dabo and Rose's return.

They had 5 players out on international duty, with 1 senior play on the bench for them. That had an impact.

We had the same issues at the start of last season and seemed to adopt a policy of just going long as soon as the back line were in trouble. Just teething problems until they become more settled as a unit.

This is right. McFadzean particularly got caught out a few times early on last season before finding his feet. So much comes down to confidence. If we are winning, playing this way will come easily to the players following last season's confidence boosting form, but if we start on a losing run with teams actively closing us down to force errors it will be a lot harder for us to continue to play that way. We will need to be able to mix it up more, so that we make the opposition wary of over committing to the high pressing game.

Tyler Walker and Hamer will be important driving this next season. Walker has got the pace to stretch defences and Hamer likes a direct pass from deep.

On the whole, I do think we’re going to be a bit more counter-attacking this season.

Hamer created 2 great chances, makes you wonder if they fell to Godden or Walker they would have been goals.

Bakas aggression was a think of beauty but he has to be able to do it for a whole game or at least a good proportion.of it.

He really looked up for it yesterday. Was great to see.

The way Baka bullied that CB to create his chance is exactly what we’ve been wanting to see from him since he joined! I got a good feeling about Baka this season.

Exactly. Kelly and Hamer will make a very good partnership in midfield.

I’m still confused how McFadz didn’t bury that header!
