Has anyone ever bothered with this? I had it years ago and tried to download it again and play the old classics.
Anyone know the best version and the best Rom sites? 99% of them are not working and I fancied a game of Mr Do!

I used to have this on a raspberry pi: RetroPie

If memory serves it includes a ROM finder and downloaded as part of it. Double check though as it was a few years ago.

I have a modded Raspberry Pi which my brother built, great fun based on very similar to what Shmmeee posted I believe.

You can buy kits like this:
Amazon product ASIN B07CRRTJCD
Which come with a SDcard loaded with noobs OS which allows you to install games Systems in RetroPie - RetroPie

I have had mame for years, Mr Do! was my favourite arcade game when I was a kid, I also play Pacland, Kung Fu Master, 1942 and Rampage.

Long term ambition of mine is to build a full size arcade cabinet using an old crt and mame to provide the games. Arcades were just absolute wonderlands for me as a kid. As someone with a lot of family in Blackpool I'd be very jealous that we never had any good arcades in Coventry. We had street fighter 2 in our local chippy in Longford and you would find the odd machine in a pub or social club. There is a great place in digbeth called NQ64, lots of retro cabs and booze. Was my last night out before Covid. If someone could build that up in Fargo or something I'd be very grateful.

There’s some good gaming bars around. It does sound like the perfect thing for Fargo.

I always wanted to run one with tournament nights and the like. A proper gaming hub, but these days it’s all online so don’t know how it would do.

Yeah, and it's not exactly a cheap start up so not easy for people to test the water. I'd say people of our age, I think you are similar to me 30 - up to 50 would be keen, plus the cool kids who love a bit of retro would be in on the act.

We don't get nice things though.

I set up Retroarch on an old laptop, great fun. loads of the old rom sites have been hit by companies clamping down.

think this is a good place to start

All the old classics, I started around Sega Master System era. Think it goes up to PS1 stuff.

Been showing my lad the old games I played. Some don't hold up but a few are great fun still. All the old Mario stuff is great to play

I tell you what I've realised playing some of the old Mega Drive games etc. is how bone crushingly difficult some of them are!
I know my reactions etc will have slowed nowadays but wow... Especially with no save games etc.

Ha ha yeah man needlessly difficult. cartridge games were pricey and kids didn't have many I suppose they made them to last?!

I had about 5 games for my Master System one of which was called The Ninja. Genuinely never got past the second level the entire time I had it. Brutal
