I’m running the London Marathon in April for charity, and for some unknown reason since I found out a had a place in October my activity levels (football, gym, running) decreased and socialising increased (lots of food and beer!).

However, now Christmas and NY are done, I’m starting my training properly. My main worry is the boredom as it’s a long time to be running, so for now I’m focusing my training on longevity as opposed to miles, to try and get my body and mind used to it. I ran for an hour on Sunday and managed just over 6 miles which I was really pleased with.

I also played football on Monday night, however I failed to wake up for the gym this morning which is a little disappointing. However I’m aiming for another long (ish) run tomorrow!

While the main aim is to raise money for a charity linked to my Mum, I’m hoping a bi-product will by increased fitness levels and the disappearance of the horrible beer tyre I’ve gained the last few months!!

I struggle with this too, especially when socialising, catching up with friends/colleagues, and even just going for meals with my girlfriend.

Decent effort on Sunday, well done!

I get bored on long runs too so I either stick the treadmill up a couple of % in the gym whilst watching football or stick on a podcast if running outside. I struggle swimming too for the same reason but those boredom saving options don't work so well underwater!

Thanks!

Yes I’ve gone for the podcast option, music can take me off pace a little, plus with podcasts because you are listening more intently to the conversation, it’s more of a distraction from the fact you’re on a long boring run!

I’ve done 3 runs since Sunday, we’ve been eating pretty healthy all slimming world recipes bread and crisps are my downfall as I see a sandwich and a bottle of coke as a treat on a nightshift. Need to cut the beer out a bit too, I might give dry February a go

Couldn’t recommend Heineken Blue highly enough if you’re a lager drinker and want a decent fix. Non alcoholic and a third of the calories. Don’t wake up feeling rotten either.

Week 3

Thought sod it. Normal amount to drink. Normal amount of exercise. But dropped the munchies. Dropped 4lb. Down to 17st 1lb. My ideal weight is just below 16st where I was before Xmas. 4lb a week and will be there in a month.

I wish they had something to automate that on treadmills so it slows you down, speeds you up. End up having to piss around with the controls all the time

Still off the booze. It’s now starting to be far less tempting than it used to be. The spirits in the house are tempting but in the pub I’m happy with OJ and lemonade

5 weeks into a training programme and all going well. Weight down 17lbs on pre-Christmas which is decent, but getting some real strength back now and working myself hard. Been doing 4 mornings a week, 3 more weeks to go of this programme then start another 12 week one.

Having a few beers tonight though after a naff week at work. Still drinking the non-alcoholic stuff most of the time so I’m allowing it as a treat.

What do you do to not get bored?

I have tried a few times to go for a run but I just get bored even with music on etc.

If I go and do circuits with shuttles where it isn't just running like that I'm fine as it's more stimulation! 0h er!

I can go weeks without drinking at times and genuinely don’t miss it, I feel so much better and my quality of sleep is much better. I moved over to Italy in Jan so have been having some beer or wine most days but just in moderation, I will probably revert back to old habits of not indulging soon though.

Finding myself feeling starving in the day on weekdays because I tend not to eat a massive amount at work. Think I need to get some nibbles for at my desk but can’t have nuts or raw fruit (which would be the easiest option) because I have a reaction to them. Anyone have suggestions of what I could have in place of them? I’m quite happy to make it myself rather than buy pre-packaged stuff.

Try keto if you can, I'm rarely hungry now but it's no carbs high fat.

If not, ice cold water helps full you up

It is just a pain prep wise and if you have kids and have to be prepare 2 lots of meals
