So the Oystons of Blackpool have just won a £20k award each in court, after two of their fans admitted libeling them on a club website.

Didn't SISU/Fisher attempt to do the same some some of our supporters a couple of years ago?

It seems the Judge was quite sympathetic towards the poor owners, being hassled by paying customers who weren't happy with the way the club was going.

How many more cases will this lead to, where fans get screwed over by owners and we can't complain.

Be careful how you answer.

Complaining and libel are a million miles apart, nobody's got anything to worry about except maybe that odd fella who suggested hassling Tim Fisher's kids at school.

It was McGuinnity wasn't it? Think it might have been GMK he was after.

Johnny on LAST was threatened by the one with the impeachable character if I remember correctly.

Sorry Unimpeachable character. Freudian slip there!

Surely you just don't post things that could get you done for libel?

Don't really recall Sisu doing anything like that.

I've never had issues like that from sisu about posts on here, no comment about other parties.

Does that mean if I say X Factor is fixed, Simon Cowell will sue me?

They sent the trust a letter saying that they would have to take legal action if they didn't take a link down to a David Conn Guardian article down if they took legal action against David Conn. They never took any action against David Conn and the article was never corrected. Hundreds of fans promptly tweeted and shared the link on facebook in defiance of SISU's threat, the trust took the link down while seeking legal advice and IIRC it appeared again later.

No one faced the courts in the end and SISU made themselves look even more of CU Next Tuesday's than they already looked.

In the interest of balance, from what I understand Sisu aren't the only party to threaten legal threats for stuff written on this forum and gmkonline.

In my opinion SISU wouldn't even know the first thing about taking someone to court for anything would they? Would be so alien for a caring member of society to do such a thing.

Still not they that made the threats during that saga

Just for the record, I think the council, SISU, franchised rugby teams, Andy Thorn, Freddie Eastwoods caravan, Glen, text-a-sub, other League One clubs, hill dwellers, Clinton Morrisons commentary skills and our transfer policy circa 2011-2014, are all absolutely brilliant. Thanks.

General insults and threats are covered in criminal law by things like the Public Order Act and ofences like harassment.

Libel covers defamation of character and it has to cause the person or organisation a financial loss.

So just giving an opinion like SISU are crap at running a football club is not libel. Especially if thousands of other customers are expressing that opinion and are evidencing reasons why they think that. It would have to be a real concerted campaign for a disgruntled fan to fall foul of Libel Laws.

At this point I think he'd just be delighted people are still paying attention to it.

Interestingly the law in the States says (broadly) that you have to prove malice. Which is how Family Guy get away with so much.

At a place I worked years ago (but before I worked there) they had a gentleman come in who heard a member of staff describe him as a shoplifter to another staff member. He demanded to see the manager and informed her that he was going to sue them for libel. Manager said that he's welcome to do so because:
i) He should be suing for Slander not Libel.
ii) He's well known in the area as a convicted shoplifter and the comment was therefore fact.

I'm sure that there was some embellishment to the story over the years but it still made me laugh as they pointed him out to me and waved as he walked past the window.

We've had huge debates on this forum about Marlon King and more recently Ched Evans. Just a question connected to this... Should someone with a criminal conviction of such magnitude be allowed to own a football club?

But people aren't fussed when other parties throw threats around to other people?

By rights they were re publishing as they copied and pasted, the same as things on here.

Anyone with a spent conviction should be able to do whatever they want. Barring obvious things like being banned from being a director or a profession.
