I'd love Walsh to sign but I'm also a Hamersexual so I'd be disappointed if he left after just a season. I'd be nervous around the fitness of Kelly, James and Walsh going into a season with them (+Sheaf?) as our deep midfield options.

If you're a practicing Hamersexual and you like to have Kelly in the middle, then you should definitely Sheaf up,

Because he spent a year here and we ruined him for them

Understandable point, but I suspect Walsh will have offers at this level and likely at £10k per week. JJ was with us in L2 and nobody but us at this level likely to take a punt and I'd be surprised if more than £3k p/w

Just for clarity, I'd sign him in a flash, IMO head and shoulders the best midfielder the promotion season.

When can you sign out of contract players. Is it from the moment they are released ?

I assume you can still sign if under a transfer embargo

I think you can sign them but contracts don't normally start until July 1st.

My head: We already have Hamer and maybe James, who are better and play similar roles, so perhaps the money would be better spent elsewhere
My heart: Liam Walsh, hell yeah

£3k is a lot of money for a player who’s been injured for nearly half of his career and only proven in league 2

One would be far cheaper, and is already here and, for that matter, wouldn't be expected to be up to speed straight away. Would we be signing Walsh to let him have half a season in the U23s?

Would take Liam Walsh in a heartbeat. Add Jamie Paterson to that too as competition/support for O'Hare.

I think the sentiment here is that they believe he probably is good enough. However he's never really played in the Championship. He also spent the vast majority of the season injured. Therefore they don't know if he's good enough.
You should remember that Bristol City have generally been just above mid-table for the last four years or so. They want to be pushing for play-offs (every club's fans over-estimate their expectations!). There is a bit of bitterness at how the second half of the season (as well as the end of last season) went. Think they want to rip up and start again. Could well be a case of throwing the baby out with the bath water.......

Paterson would be quality. Pace, tricky and scored goals. Versatile attacker.

People questioning Walsh being up to championship standard need to get a grip. I know it's not 'proven' but he was player of the season the year we went up, he was ahead of players like O'hare who just won our current player of the seaon. If he stays fit he would be an excellent signing who would require less bedding in than other targets. Sign him up

Why are people so quick to want to move Hamer on as a makeweight?

Really strange.

People saying sell Hamer is absolutely ludicrous it’s so frustrating. We always moan about selling our best players and we’ve got a player who could be a top player for us next season and people are calling for him to be sold.

I’d love to sign Walsh but definitely not at the expense of losing Hamer!!

I would imagine it's because we have enough midfielders and there are rumours that bigger clubs will pay a wadge for him - meaning we can improve elsewhere - for example a big striker who can also score.

I don’t think people want to, as you’ve said the selling club aspect of CCFC has conditioned us to accept someone’s moving on and Hamer is class - so is likely to be prime target.

walsh just happens to be a perfect replacement.

ideally I’d love to start next season with Walsh, Hamer and James in CM

A rotatable midfield of Walsh, Hamer, James, Kelly, O'Hare, Jones and Sheaf is dream stuff

I don't think it's as a makeweight. It's just CM would have a lot of competition if we sign Walsh as well. I think the consensus would more be to not sign Sheaf in favour of Walsh. There would be the option to switch to Walsh instead of James as a target but I think the experience the latter has and the influence he was beginning to have towards the end of the season that probably wouldn't be great. Given James' wages etc he'll probably get a few offers and possibly a better offer elsewhere and he may not join anyway, in which case Walsh would be a good alternative.

The Hamer thing is more to do with potential fees from it. Let's say we got £5m for him which we could put towards a ST, CB, AM, GK and/or LWB. It might give us the funds to pursue three of those, maybe more. Given we could get someone to potentially replace Hamer for free would that be better for overall squad balance?

Imagine playing a diamond with James at the base Hamer and Walsh in the centre and O’Hare at the tip - just behind Godden and Walker
