Kitching is decent. So progressive with the ball. Has some steel. Leads by example. really like him. We do need another CB but that’s great as the squad will benefit by the competition for places.

Fantastic at advancing the ball, reminds me of Doyle in the play off final season, confident to move through the lines and make things happen, only defender we have at the club who can do it

It was interesting to see Thomas and Kitching playing separate halves last night, rather than as a pair. Slightly to my surprise, I thought Kitching looked by far the more authoritative player.

Interesting to see him as right CB (think he played there v Luton last season when Lati went off). Looked good although I’m sure it would get targeted if we started doing it regularly. Ideally need another player in who can cover RCB and RB.

Just a shame he can’t defend really.

Am loving all the “this performance against Luton reserves completely disproves all previous evidence” trend though, keep it up.

I think that player is Lati.

We do desperately need another CB though.

Seems to have come on leaps and bounds as a leader, no wonder he’s clearly vice-captain

If we lose MVE, we need someone to cover RB that isn’t Lati IMO. Also not convinced by him as a CB in a back 4. Don’t hate the guy but I think he was recruited for a system we no longer play and doesn’t really fit anywhere now.

Really hope he isn’t the answer to backup RB (might well be though) - need a proper fullback I think.

Personally, I think Thomas is a better defender than Kitching. The two do compliment each other v well and it’s a position where you need good combinations.

I would necessarily sign a CB unless they’re next level and will start ahead of them both.

To be honest, you’re amongst the most guilty on here for confirmation bias. You’ve never liked Lampard and any evidence were declining in performance and you’re all over it.

I’m sure said similar things when we beat Bristol and Oxford last year in the cup.

Do any Data heads have something that shows how Kitching and Thomas compare? because I just don't get the 'Thomas good, Kitching not' meme at this point.

Players like Thomas, Kitching, Torp, Mason Clarke and Sakamoto need to kick on this year if we are to cement ourselves into being a top four side.

I think all of those players can be developed and improved from last season.

We definitely need another CB as we sold Luis Binks. Whilst I like his song, having Jake Bidwell as a back up CB fills me with dread.

I think the individual stats aren’t as favourable for Kitching. Last year a lot of people justified Lati and Binks starting ahead of Kitching because statistically they were comparable.

The problem was that whenever you paired Lati & Binks together, we kept less clean sheets and conceded close to 2 goals a game. It took Lampard 5-6 weeks to undo the damage done by Robins / Carr by breaking up a successful CB partnership from 23/24.

It’s not perfect, but is far and away our best CB pairing.

Defended well second half and always puts his body on the line
He’s not an answer to any question at cb though

We’re after Charlie Hughes (or were) so something is in the pipeline.

Considering Thomas, Kitching and Lati have all been reliable injury-wise, I’m a bit more relaxed with getting to Jan on 3 CBs. This is because if we’re signing a CB, they need to be a Day 1 starter imo - no point in signing role players. As a position, it has quite a low attrition rate and can’t recall when we’ve had a shortage of CBs due to injuries/suspensions.

First priority is a winger and then a CB. For both positions you need 4 bodies but because wingers are regularly subbed off to change the game and they’re more likely to get injured than CBs too.

Whilst that’s true, how many games did we need to go to 4th in the depth chart?

Luton away was a biggy and there may have been 2-3 games when we played 5-3-2. Thomas in particular deserves credit for being fit and available, he hasn’t missed a league game through injury since he’s joined. Likewise, I can’t recall Kitching being injured since he’s joined either - it’s all been suspensions from 23/24 that’s he’s missed.

Both can be improved upon of course but both are decent enough, quite like them. Freezing out Kitching while we saw regular appearances from the likes of Binks and Lati was one of the stupidest things Robins did towards the end.

Additional point, both will benefit playing in front of a competent keeper rather than a clown.
Additional point 2, Thomas plays with MvE to his right who is considerably better than the LB options Kitching has had to deal with, so maybe that has helped his side look stronger in peoples minds. Hopefully Brau can be good for us this season.

The evidence behind Kitching is our continued superior record when he plays.

Also, thanks for doing falling into my trap

Most noticeable last night was when Kitching came on we seemed calmer at the back and less frenetic . First half we were all over the place at the back

Here are their stats from last season. Not an ideal comparison because it omits some stuff and I don’t have time to do a deep dive.

They’re both poor. Thomas has a bit more about him and is younger so is worth sticking with but I wouldn’t shed a tear if we replaced both. But we’ve only got one LCB and two RCB so would make sense if someone’s coming it it’s on that side.

Thomas was quite rash on Saturday as well, it's a fine line between having a bit of edge as a centre back and getting dragged out and involved in stuff you don't need to be in

Kitching has been our best centre half for a long time. No idea why it took Lampard and co so long to start him. The game last night should also out to bed the nonsense /obsession about left footed and right footed CH’s. It doesn’t matter which they are or what side they play.

Thomas and Kitching are perfectly capable championship centre backs
They are not however players you want to build the attacks with
That's why we were poor in that area Saturday
Hull kept very close to Grimes not giving him his usual space and consequently it was left to the cb's to pass the ball out of defence, something that both need a lot of work on
I do like both of them though and they are easily our best option as a pair

I disagree. It can work but the left-footed RCB has to be very competent, confident and comfortable on their right side. Ideally, you have a Left footer and a right footer but scarcity of left footed CBs means that many right footed CBs have spent years through all levels of football playing LCB and are adept at compensating.
I like Kitching and have a higher opinion of his passing than some people. But he does get it wrong sometimes. Last night he looked good but most of his passing to feed the right channel was with his left foot. I can guarantee that would soon be targeted by opposition teams if we did it regularly in the championship. Would he cope with that? Honest answer- don’t know.

One of the things that ended Robins tenure was his refusal to play Kitching. The time he made him a LWB for the day was laughable.
