It would help if our journalists could ask frank about kitching in a pre match presser or something

Who would pay anything for him, and why would he accept what would presumably be a big salary drop?

Some utterly clueless whoppers on here (shmmeee for example), he's back in the team like I've said he should be all season and we suddenly look like we can defend.

I was also a huge naysayer of his to be fair.

Still need to see it over the course of a full season as it's only been a few games, but credit to him he's put in some quality performances.

Will help in the summer if we don't have to rip the defence apart and start again.

Great runs forward too today, really changes our dynamic of lateral to wide all the time.

I've never been convinced he was out solely for footballing reasons but he is back now and lo we look a different team.

Has always been our best CH. His continued omission was up there with Dovin’s.

Should have been all season mate. Really weird how he was frozen out from the start.

I also think we always look better with 3 central defenders. The four we have all look decent if they play in a three. Part of the problem when we play two, if they are paired with Van Ewijk and Dasilva we are too short on height and physical presence.

Dasilva especially, also he just let's too much ball come in from his flank. His poor positional play often pulls a central defender (often Binks) across out of position to try and cover.

Dasilva has been the glaring defensive weakness rather than the central defenders - put Collins in the mix and that was why we were so porous.

No Dasilva and Collins plus playing 3 central defenders is the real answer.

Kitching has been excellent since being back in the side, I always thought there was a player there, he just needed to cut out the silly mistakes. Cool and calm under pressure, tough, plus them marauding runs he does are a real asset. He was crucial for the 2nd goal.

Kitching looks at least a stone lighter than he did last season, looks more agile and that run forward for the second goal demonstrated it well, he's reasonably quick to be fair to him.

The clearer it becomes that Kitching is actually pretty decent, the more I question what Robins was playing at by freezing him out.

The evidence was there for a large part of last season, yet he got bombed out by Robins, then continued by Rees Karr and Lampard until he saw the light.

Maybe something went on that we don't know about as Robins was pissed off with him towards the end of the season, but exiling him as well as messing around with the GK has cost us a lot of points this season.

He’s not Van der Ven but he is quicker than most people give him credit for. Also agree how it’s noticeable he’s lost a few pounds and looks a bit sharper. I said in the summer he’d be fine. Just needed to sort his head out. He does need to string a few more performances together but pleased for the lad.

Ngl, is ok feeling smug that, like you it felt that Kitching was a missing piece on the defence this season!

It’s no coincidence that we’re keeping more clean sheets and looking better defensively with him in the team and, dare I say it, if Robins had kept faith, he’d still be in a job right now.

Him and Thomas were very good last season but they did have Sheaf and Eccles in front of them

Without Dovin there wouldn't have been a clean sheet. We probably would've lost.

The defence was pretty terrible in the first half to be frank and was totally bullied by Blackburn's aerial threat.

Some hairy moments in the second half as well, Kitching wasn't exempt from this. His positioning and awareness for Gueye's chance when he was put through was poor.

That said, for the time being he looks decent on the whole and his ability to drive the ball forward offers us another outlet.

Agreed on the above

Same with Bristol City on Saturday, first 20 they could have been 1 or 2 up but for Dovin

Robins for some reason did have a issue with some players.. whether it was attitude, training or something else who knows?

It's strange Robins didn't play Kitching. A couple of people have mentioned he may have been overweight?

Also strange that Carr brought him in for Sunderland and then dropped him again.
Even taking into account recent improvements I still thi k Sunderland 2nd half was one of our best 45 minutes of the season.

He was still the weak link and was targeted. He played better, I acknowledged that Saturday, but given his experience he just isn't good enough defensively.

Kitching had got trim in the summer, you could see it in the pre season games. I get the feeling Robins was really pissed off with his third sending off, the one at Blackburn. As much as I liked Robins he did occasionally ostracize a player.
