Whens he back? Anyone know if there's been a setback?

Few weeks ago Robins said him and Godden were both almost there, yet Goddens done 45 of an U23 and made the bench, and Kels nowhere to be seen

I think he's back training with the group
But I guess he won't be rushed as he had quite a bad case of the lurgy

He would have been ideal coming on in the second half yesterday, and will certainly be needed during the season.

We had similar discussions re. Kelly at the beginning of our division one campaign and last season each time he came back and into the team we improved.

Certainly In the match day squad and offers a way to see games out when we are ahead.
Also an experienced head in the dressing room which helps.

Would have been great to have on the bench on Tuesday when we needed to calm things down in the last quarter of the game. Saw the game out without him this time but think that'll when he'll be most useful.

Depends on what Robins is playing. With Jones and bright, we’re open to playing different systems, same as Kelly. Can easily play 3 men in central midfield where Kelly would be needed.

good player to have when you have an AM causing havoc, bring Kelly on to break it up

Kelly is my man and unless Covid and the injury has caused any long-term problems I expect him to be a first choice midfielder once he has eased his way back in. Either way it is great Hamer, Sheaf and Allen will have to play at the top of their game with a fit Kelly waiting in the wings.

He's still club captain right ?so unless Robins relinquishes that from him then who knows what's the plan ...

No chance unless we have injuries he’s not good enough for the championship.

He has lots of qualities but unfortunately his passing and distribution is not good enough for the way we want to play at this level.

He'll often just chip the ball forwards into the channel, Hamer and Sheaf use it much better.

He still has an important part to play this season and will play plenty of games, just not as first choice.

Kelly’s passing ability is way below the level needed at this level

Still not in the U23s.

Something more afoot here surely? Has Covid ruined him?

It wouldn't be the first time he took longer to come back from an ailment than expected.

Given how we play, with playing the ball far more on the deck and a reliance on our CMs to make driving runs as well as spraying the ball to our wing backs, I suspect Kelly will find it difficult getting back into the side. Even more so now Allen has found form.

As much as I like him as a player I'm really not sure what attributes Kelly has over the other three in his position that would benefit us currently.

He's had covid as well, so while his injury may have healed he has been otherwise out of action. Not really sure what the panic is.

I may be wrong but thriughout his 4 years at club with numerous minor injuries he's never really come back in under 23s as far as I can remember.

He usually just comes on as sub in first team and the substitute appearances get longer and longer untill he starts.

This is how he builds his match fitness as his general fitness is top notch.

Would be good to have him back would it not? Being as we only have Sheaf and Hamer as fit CM options

Kelly's main strengths imo are his organisation and positioning sense. Although we have been playing great attacking football we have almost been caught out on several occasions defensively. Against better teams we possibly would have been. This is why Kelly is key - he reduced the chances presented to the opposition.

I agree they haven't had many shots at goal but we have been caught out on the break and a poor final pass or a last ditch interception has prevented a clear opportunity.

The main thing is with the loss of that comes more ability to create and we are more than able of playing teams off the park
