I would give him another year and club to have option of another year. It is not just his ability but is an influential figure at the club.

This is probably the last time he'll be in a strong position at contract renewal
You can't blame him for wanting the best deal for him and his family

Give him a 2 year deal with a season option in clubs favour.

The fella deserves it and has earned it, great composure, positioning, leads by example and normally plays it simple.

Hmmm, not so sure on the composure point.

If we can come to a mutually agreeable deal then I'd be delighted to keep him but worry about his injuries & I feel we need more quality on the ball to progress at this level. James & Sheaf can bring a lot of what Kelly does but are much, much better in possession.

Just to be clear I love the guy & appreciate everything he's done & absolutely DO want to retain him but on a sensible deal (1 +1yr club option or similar) rather than handing out a 2-3 year guarantee.

No I would not stop any player making the best decision for themselves. It is not always about money though? Staying local also has family benefits. Staying with an employer who values you also has benefits. The downside of his CV is the amount of games he manages each season. Both sides have things they can negotiate on.

Agreed
I think a deal is still likely
Give and take on both sides

If we are offering Jodi Jones another year I think it’s pretty safe to say Kelly is being extended

We've seen this season who much squad depth is needed. Kelly has been competitive and effective at this level. Compare that with others in our squad who have looked like pub players at times. He should get a new deal

I’d keep Kelly and look to get small fees for Shipley and Allen

I'd keep him , but if he left us he'd be an asset to any club in League 1 looking for a good head in the middle and promotion

Hope he gets another year

He isn't our captain for no reason. Of course he should be offered a new deal. He's a massive figure around our club - and a top pro for all our budding youngsters to learn off.

I agree, he should be offered a new deal, would be a shame if we didn't. What he lacks in quality he brings in leadership, and we're always worse off when he's not in the side.

We've just won 3 games on the bounce and suddenly there seems to be a whiff in the air that we don't need him. It's absolute madness!

Ok, injuries have been frustrating, but we wouldn't be where we are in the league without him.

Our results have been far better with him in the team than without. On that basis it would be gamble to not renew him for another year.

Hmm I like him a lot but sort of agree with Grendel he is getting on - playing Sunday footy myself still at 46 the body does go and injuries kick in more and more. I am not sure his body is standing up to Championship rigours if I am honest and will probably only get worse.

However call me a sentimental old fool but I would offer him a years contract - however if I was Robins would plan on him not playing the majority of the year due to injury!

I’d offer a one year contract with an option for another year, with the view to being more squad player than guaranteed first teameas time progresses (as previously suggested). Although I’d love to be more sentimental, we can’t afford to be.
I’m not saying he’s no longer an asset. If that was the case, then it’s thanks for the memories and goodbye.

One objective way (although doesn’t take into account squad experience) is to think would the likes of Hull, Peterborough, Sunderland, Huddersfield, Rotherham, Shef Wed, Derby or Forest want to sign him next year? These are all teams likely to be bottom half Championship or promotion hopefuls in L1. There isn’t an obvious answer for me, but maybe not. As it’s worked well so far - keep going unless we can sign obviously better players on similar money for next season (pretty unlikely).

I’ve had a few drinks so probably chatting more bollocks than normal but I’m full on keeping him here. Liam Kelly on the pitch is as much Coventry City as Mark Robins in the dugout is.

He came to us in league two and we weren’t really sure what he was. He developed so much that season and his development coincided with our upturn in form and promotion.

First league one season he held together a side that was up and down but last season he was talismanic in our promotion.

He leads us, we’re better with him. Every division we’ve been in we’re better with him than without him.

He leads us, we’re better with him. Every division we’ve been in we’re better with him than without him.

He embodies the progress we’ve made. Calm, collected, forward thinking and steps up to the mark when it matters.

I love him.

Whether he stays or not he is definitely the modern day legend. The constant in the team rising through the divisions, noticable absence when he is out of the team and makes all who play with him better. He deserves every bit of praise and accolade he receives. Whether he signs a contract or not he deserves to be offered one

I suspect Kelly lost a lot of leverage with the length of his injury. Having that kind of injury for most of preseason would dissuade a lot of potential suitors.

Will be his last contract here I'd imagine.

Hopefully he's fit for August

Looks like they will wait for progress with the knee first and then offer back end of pre-season.

3 on the bounce playing hit and hope football which is very much his game. I’d hope that’s not the plan for 46 games next season.

It's a pity about the injury, but I'm glad that he will probably be getting a new contract. If he's fit at the end of pre season, he'll need time to catch up and just having recovered from a knee injury won't help him get ready for next season.

Listening to our resident Barnsley fan ...they seem to play long and press on the loose balls or interceptions..

Fucking playoffs

It seems to work

But I like my Tika Taka Evo! Don’t take that away from me

Also got to wonder how long before teams figure that out as a tactic like we did.

I thought in all honesty we mixed it up a bit over those 3 matches ..

I do appreciate good football though
