From what ive seen this season (Milwall, Crewe and southend) he hasn't done that much wrong shot saving wise. If he hadnt saved that penalty away at milwall i think that could of been a very different day. and the penalty the other night he got a hand to it. You cant blame him for the southend draw, the two goals we conceded were as a result of errors made by the back 4. and we would of won it if they didnt have the league 1 equivalent of manuel neuer in goal...
I have to admit his kicking is quite poor, he's being coached by oggy what can we expect and at times on monday night i was screaming at him to quickly release the ball after he's made a save, half southends team are still in our final 3rd and armstongs got acres of space in behind there 7 ft bald headed centre half, a quick long throw and he's away. is it a confidence issue?
Anyway atm we should be backing the lad as he's all we've got. id rather gamble on keeping burge and using the budget on a few attacking midfielders and a tall centre forward

Lots of rose tinted nostalgia about Murphy. Good keeper at this level but not averse to making mistakes himself.

Every goalie makes mistakes what's your point? Murphy was one of the best keepers in the league, and is now first choice in the championship...

I seriously do not get the criticism about burge's kicking?
Goal kicks have improved since he first came in, most stay in play, and are into the usual areas goal kicks go to?
when he claims the ball, why do fans suddenly think he can play a 70 yard pass, pin point to Armstrong or JOB? Out outfield players can't do that so why would burge be able too. We have no height up front to hold up the ball or win headers, so what is the point in long kicks like everyone expects into 4 players who are all 6ft or less

The reason why we were playing more direct for the first half was because Southend had a player sitting right in front of the defence blocking every single pass which was aimed for an attacker. Southend knew if they let us play on the floor (like they did for the last 20 mins, when the player must have got tired/taken off) they would get destroyed like Wigan and Millwall did. They came here with a plan to make us play long ball to reduce the threat of our attackers and it worked well for them. Good thinking by Brown, reckon if we played 5 more minutes we would have won though.

I didn't say we were playing direct? Or ask why? I was saying why do people complain when burge can't pick out a 70 yard pass within 3 seconds of picking up the ball?

I liked Murphy but he rarely came off his line and whilst he was with us we let a lot of goals in from crosses and set pieces. The centre halves took a lot of blame for it but I dont think he helped us with his aversion to taking crosses.

As soon he gets that ball he should be straight onto his feet looking for the runs from the front 4. if its on he should take the gamble and try the long ball down the channel...over the top of the player so he can run onto it cause he's obviously not going to win the header and id say 9 times out of 10 armstrong would win the foot race between him and the centre back. Burge lacks urgency.

What? It's no coincidence that Bentley saved the penalty and Burge never saved theres. Burge doesn't have the slightest idea of how you can get into the penalty takers mind. Bentley did, it was a poor penalty but he knew where he was going all along IMO.

It is a coincidence you mad man. The penalty being missed / saved isn't contingent on just the goalkeeper.

RCC was great in pre-season in the games I saw him play. Good handling, confident around the box and he could kick straight too!

You know Mowbray probably tells him to wait and play it short?

Do you have a better chance of saving a penalty if you delay it as long as possible and try to get into the mind of the penalty taker?

Christ poor old Burge even cops it on here for not saving the penalty, saved a crucial one at Millwall obviously a bit lucky there

I think the reason why a lot of people dislike Burge is because our last two keepers were Westwood and Murphy. Burge isn't anywhere near them but he isn't as bad as people make him out to be.

So if we never signed Allsop on loan, Burge would not be slagged off?

No but he did have a contract with Southampton after they got promoted to the premier league. So he did have premier league contract didn't he?

No he had a contract in the league below and unlike Allsopp wasn't good enough to warrant another one.

What are you talking about? He had a contract with a premier league club so he had a premier league contract. And Allsop didn't even deserve one anyway.

I expect Eddie Howe will be fearful for his job while you are about. I bet you blindly backed Andy Thorn as well.

They couldn't legally cancel his contract just because they got promoted.

Alsopp was out of contract. A premier league club offered him one.

The only premier league contract Buge would be offered is if the conference variety.

He's 3rd choice and won't play a game all season. I'm sure Burge could do that job equally well.

In fact I think Michael Quirke could do it, or maybe even you or I.

Grendel think you are being a bit silly here... A lot of goalkeepers have prem contracts but it doesn't make them up to standard... Look at most second choice goalies when they are released, the drop down a division or 2... David stockdale-championship
ross turnbull-championship
brad jones- league one

these are just a few examples, number 2's are often of poor standard even at top clubs... So imagine the standard of a number 3?

A) No, I said the opposite of that and you know it. B) Yes, that's why there's no "we want sisu out" chants anymore.

Just because a Prem No 2 drops down to the Championship does not make them a low standard. It just means they want to play games. There is only one number one goalie for each Prem team and most of them play the entire season, so the number two rarely if ever gets a game.

The real point here is Mowbray has to develop some of the existing stock. I would even put Red a in that category despite his obvious experience. He hasn't the budget to replace the whole team. All teams have a weakest player even at the top of the Premiership.

So far from the less experienced he has chosen Maddison, Burge, Phillips, Willis and Stokes (who was here on a temporary contract) as his main contenders. Even Lameries has been signed due to his development potential.

With what has been achieved so far I would rather support these lads and support Mowbray''s experience within football when it comes to judging potential, rather than the potty mouthed opinion of the likes of Grendel.

Burge has not been directly responsible for one goal this season. He is much improved this season along with Stokes and Maddison prior to his injury.

Sometimes to manage means manage with what you have already got. Things are looking good from where I have been sat at games. Mowbray has won me back.
