I just explained. The tactics and formation wa wrong. He could have changed it. But did nothing.

Nothing to do with the players not delivering, illness, injury, ref, opposition players on it etc ? Only change would maybe have been trying to keep Rudi more central to firm up the middle but they’d have probably just got more joy down wings.

We gifted away possession far too easily first half. Fact is, if you can’t keep the ball against a quality team they’ll hurt you.

Just an off day against the best team in the league. Frustrating but not the end of the world

Rudoni’s always had a tendency to drift out wide to find space, and fundamentally no issue with him doing that. However, he seems to be doing it so early in moves (like when we’re playing out of defence) that it makes us quite predictable. Need him to stay central earlier in the play and drift wide to create an overload/open up central space once we’re in their half.

The problem was much less about tactics last night and much more about the fact that Rudoni is out of form and had a bad game yet again and that Saka has been off his game lately too and he had a poor game too

All Ipswich had to do was to nullify EMC. Wright didn't play well, but had very poor service.

Rudoni was a passenger last night.

The one change I think that may have made the difference, was Eccles for Rudoni. But I can see why FL went for Rudoni again. When he's on form, he's one of the best players in the Championship.

He's so frustrating at the moment, because we all know what he's capable of and what a match winner he can be.

He seriously needs to recapture his form, because he's offering very little at the moment.

An in-form Saka and and in-form Rudoni, last night, might well have made a hell of a difference.
Sakamoto has been a passenger for a while now too. He tends to have 2-3 bursts of goals and assists and then won’t do much for 5-6 games.

I’ve been disappointed with Rudoni and Wright too. Lampard is probably trying to play them into form but there’s a real question of whether or not it’s the right thing to do. Eccles has had more goals and assists lately and thought we looked a little more controlled in midfield when he came on.

Part of it will be fatigue and the illness that’s been in the side.

And he’s very effective wide as it allows us to overload the wings and he can also put in a great cross as he did yesterday. I just thought they controlled the middle of the park so if he stayed more central it might’ve helped give us a bit more control. I’d personally have had Eccles on earlier to try to help with this

Wright’s issue isn’t his scoring, it’s that in the games he doesn’t score he offers less than nothing. Goals only go so far. Can tell me what he brings to the team beyond scoring which he isn’t even doing at the moment?

Your striker is there to score goals. I know this is a laughable notion this season but if we got a pen there’s no one in the squad I’d rather take it. Say what you want but goal scorers are worth their weight on goals alone. 11th highest scorer in the modern era. Vik used to mope about and not track back too. Your lone striker is there to have the energy to break and score at any time. Not to run himself into the ground.

Other thing whilst it’s in my mind: a game like last night there’s very little point in defending in a 442 shape. Rudoni should have been playing as a third CM off-the-ball, especially given he didn’t seem to have particular interest in actually pressing and cutting off options. The space they had in midfield was criminal.

Strikers go through lean spells. Even having not scored for months he’s got an all timer goal per game still. He’s got enough credit in the bank and Simms despite his form has been contributing less. The role is one that just doesn’t get a lot until the ball is in the box and what’s happened since October is less Haji Wright has become useless and more CCFC aren’t creating the chances we were for various reasons.

It worries me that even me, an idiot, knew that Ipswich don’t like it when you do a low block and counter yet over two games we’ve barely tried it.

Every player (except Rushworth) was off-colour last night. Never seen us give the ball away so cheaply under Lampard EMC, Sakamoto, Torp and Wright nullified.
I am not sure Ipswich were ALL THAT. General consensus is we should have had a penalty at 0-0, and although their press was an issue for us, I think equally the problem was our whole team were having a nightmare. It happens.
To be honest since Boro away at the end of November we have been a little ragged. We may have beaten Charlton, Swansea and Bristol at the CBS, but all those teams caused us problems. The 2nd half at Ipswich was poor, as was the Preston performance.
It seems we shall be doing business in January. We need a winger as the first priority, possibly 2, and a No.10 would be useful too. BTA will be back too, so I expect this dip will be reversed very soon.

So you're saying he has one job, he's not doing that job, but that's not his fault?

I predicted him to go on another scoring spree just last week.
Having watched him last night I now realise I was guilty of the most ludicrous case of wishful thinking in the history of wishful thinking.

Don’t get me wrong, if that was our plan we were definitely shit at it.

I actually though we were better when we stopped the whole “football” thing and turned it more into a war of attrition; lots of fouls, ball getting hoofed out of play etc. That seemed to stem the early pressure.

I actually think Wright made one good decision last night when he took a shot on at a relative distance - knew the pass wasn’t on / he couldn’t make the pass for EMC so he was gambling on EMC following in for the rebound after the keeper saved.

Unfortunately that was his one and only best moment last night

No idea, but he's gone massively backwards since October.
Though let's be honest, Simms is also quite capable of a similar downturn for no apparent reason
Hopefully rumours of a striker coming in are true.

The tactics from the off are a bit of a red herring really. Whilst it should have been changed much earlier, it was clear that some personnel weren't up to it.

Ducking out of headers, being slow to second balls, failing to find a team mate have nothing to do with tactics. We played like a bunch of pussies and 4 or 5 players on that pitch yesterday were far too submissive and let Ipswich walk away with their victory without much of a challenge.

All this talk of certain players being equipped for the Premier League should be measured at this point. If we do go up we are going to have to fight and scrap for our lives against superior teams. I did not see any of that on display yesterday and it does concern me slightly, as well as extremely annoying the fuck out of me.

To be fair we haven't really played to Wright's strengths, there's a lot more punts towards the forwards which isn't his game.

But he's always been a streaky kind of striker so if one goes in he'll go on another run

Id like another striker option in because neither Wright nor Simms are what I’d call conventional top of championship strikers. Both have excellent goal scoring records but I’d like someone who can hold the ball, bring others in, that sort of thing.

I'd also like a goals over who can score more consistently, rather that scoring 20 goals in half an hour then nothing for 6 months

It's not about him running around like a headless chicken, it's that he offers nothing on the ball, wins nothing in the air and barely puts any pressure on the centre backs when the ball comes into feet or in the air. Part of the reason we were so pinned in for the majority of the first half yesterday was because every time the out ball went up to Wright he meekly challenged for it and lost it. He's a great striker to have when the team is playing well and creating chances but he's a complete waste of space in any game where things aren't going our way.

Vik had a 10 goal goalless streak in 22/23 and sometimes with strikers you need to play them into form.

The big difference between that season and this season, Simms had just won POTM and looked to have turned a corner and he’s dropped immediately. It’s deeply unfair on Simms.

The squad needs freshening up and Stoke in the FA Cup is a good opportunity to rest a lot of players who’ve been putting in hard shifts.

Agree that we’ve needed a proper target man for these kind of games for a while. Simms should be able to play that role but doesn’t have the touch for it really.
