Don’t understand for the life of me why these rich and famous people who have everything we could dream of risk getting in to helicopters

Love the NBA & Kobe was one of the greatest players in history.

Just 41 years old & his 13 year old daughter too.
So tragic :emoji_cry:

Awful news all round, but I feel more for his daughter who's been robbed of her young life.

Kobe was a phenomenal talent. It'd be like Messi or Ronaldo dying in a few years.

The BBC have showed a video of completely the wrong basketball player with the news.

That's what happens when the media are all about copy and paste and don't actually research, knobs.

Made even more stupid when the footage they mistakenly used of LeBron James clearly shows the name JAMES on the back of his jersey.

That made more "column inches" on Twitter than the fact that the 10 o'clock news was leading with the death of a sportsman hardly anyone had heard of, instead of worldwide issues like Corona.

It's breaking news about a globally famous sport star dying suddenly, not surprised it led.

Not really globally famous. Mostly famous in the USA and countries where basketball is a major sport (which excludes the UK).
A bit like OJ Simpson was famous in the USA for football (American that is).
But in the USA, they love to think their stars must be household names the world over.

I'm in the UK and not really a basketball fan and knew who he was?

Same as Michael Jordan and Shaq.

Basketball is a worldwide sport, Lebron James is one of the most famous sportsmen on the planet. This country's just not all that bothered compared to a lot of others.

Basketball is a very minor sport in the UK.
When I was at school, we played, football, rugby and occasionally cricket.
I think we played basketball once in 5 years and most of the kids had no idea what it was.
Maybe the coverage of US sports has expanded in the UK since I left.

I would think most people in this country haven't heard of him but it's just easy for the main news channels in the UK to let it fill the air time so you and I can be retrospectively educated about basketball's legacy even though we're not interested.

One of the instances where I was genuinely shocked when I heard this, not a huge basketball fan (although my favourite out of the American 3 sports) but this guy is huge as a player and massive work ethic. A one club man which is extremely rare and one of the greats. Poor 13 yr old daughter (and various others unnamed so far) died also and leaves behind another 3 daughters. This is our equivalent of David Beckham or Ronaldo dying in this fashion.

RIP to all on that chopper

Easy headlines. Uses up 5 minutes of the airtime with zero research while they sit back drinking their designer coffees. Does this really justify a news headline slot in this country ? I doubt whether the passing of a famous British footballer/ manager would get as much.

I'd love the news to be tailored specifically to my interests, but there just aren't that many developments in the world of crisps.
