Hes excatly what the modern day youth team footballer is, thinks they have made it before they have, pissed his career away at 22, no sympathy with people like him, his brother done the same thing too, got a big move to Sunderland and spent most of his time getting pissed, now without a club for over a year at the age of 28.

I met him in Scholars after the Blackburn cup game a few years back. We' drew 2-2 at Ewood, and they had the 87 cup final on the TV in scholars that night. As my mate stood chatting to him, he looked at the screen and said "get this shit off". My mate asked what he was on about and he said he didn't give a shit about the club. Was gutted at the time cause i genuinely thought he had the talent to be a good player.

Hmmm... I also think the Thorton case highlights the growing responsibility of clubs to nurture their young blood on a holistic level as opposed to a mere footballing capacity. Now its still likely that with that in place it may have ended the same way with Thorton but surely if you're giving a kid a fair whack of dollar at an incredibly young age then you've got a responsibility to ensure that they are developing the key life skills to cope.

If it wasn't for his parents, I could have seen Jordan Clarke going the exact same route.

Trust funds and mentors I believe are the key.

The kid is a grade A cock. Never forget the time he kicked off in Jumpin Jacks and as soon as the other lad didn't back down he hid behind 2 man mountains.

Seen him get knocked out a couple of times though, guess he didn't realise the amount of coke he had been taking!

He wasn't actually on as much money as he liked to think he was. I remember he gave my mate the line "Im on 15k a week" line, joker!

Met him and Aron once when England were playing in the Butts Retreat, was chatting to Aron about what he thought of the club, England etc and then asked what he was doing in here?

He pointed at Kev and said "Someone's gotta look after him, he's lonely. Don't worry, I'm not drinking".

Turns out, Aron left early. And Thornton played pool until he was legless, started a fight and was thrown out the back door.

Could have one the most gifted players we have had for a while, but a total piss head. It drives me mad, I love football, used to love playing, but I was crap at it. I wish I had a tiny bit of his talent. Would have been happy playing anywhere any time for peanuts. Alcohol has a lot to answer for, but so does the person drinking it, even the one of the greatest players ever George Best lost his battle with it in the end. I fear Thornton could end up the same way. What a waste

It is worth bearing in mind that Kevin Thornton has a reading age of 9 years, before we are too harsh about his lifestyle. Not making excuses and it is a definite waste of talent, but I try not to be so quick to slate someone without knowing a little about the background.

Sorry, didn't mean that to sound judgemental. I just feel a bit sorry for Thornton. I have also met him out in Scholars after games, he's seemed friendly enough on those couple of nights (although I realise it is not necessarily the norm). It was very apparent he was going to bollocks up his career and not have the gumption to prevent this... I just feel a bit sorry for him.

He could have been a decent player, had a fair bit off skill, but was a complete Tw@t, is he still banded from driving?

The other thing is he mustn't be to rich either, and with his offences he will struggle in later life.

take the point Dive but as you say it is no excuse. He has led a priviledged life and let himself down. The likes of Lee Bowyer and Andy Cole both have learning difficulties that would qualify them for the paraolympics but they didnt do so bad. I think some people have it in them to self destruct in terms of their careers and Thornton is one of them. There have been plenty of people trying to help and give him a chance and it has been his choice to pee it up the wall. A terrific waste of talent and no one to blame but himself

I agree, OSB. Just passing on information... it is clear he is a bit of a fuck up, that people will have tried to help along the way, that special schools churn out thousands upon thousands of upstanding citizens, etc. Just don't take any pleasure in his demise.

Let's not pretend that someone who makes it to adulthood with that reading age in today's education system isn't to blame themselves (or the parents are at first, but there comes a point when it's time to stand on your own two feet). Perhaps he could have spent some of his wages on reading lessons? Poor educational attainment isn't an excuse, it's an indicator of other failings.

Hes was a Cov kid, people probably wanted to see him do well etc. Bit like sheffers, only with drink issues! I cringed when it was sang tho. KT had bundles of talent that most aspiring players would die for - the big no no for him to step up to be a top Championship player was his lack of real pace.

But that shouldn't have limited his talent and career prospects because many players cannot have jet heeled pace and super ability that is why true greatness is rare.

No, what this pillock did was to abuse himself to such an extent that he has now become virtually unemployable in football terms at the age of just 25 !!!

This guy is not on his own - Gary Madine was reputed to be a PA whilst at Carlisle at age of 20. Only today on Sky Text Capello has hinted exceptionally strongly that he knows Andy Caroll "likes a drink" and he should look after his fitness and attitude - again this player is just 22 !!!

What on earth is going on with these idiots, football is a limited career say 10 years at peak playing and earning level - why cannot they show some maturity and self restraint and deliver what their ludicrous salaries are paid for.

Maybe the parent club of the delinquent should take more responsibility and closely monitor their activities and movements.

I remember years ago when the Ferguson Babes (Giggs, Beckham Scholes etc ) were subject to curfews and discipline in their early impressionable careers and apart from one or two digressions on the way have served Man U for many years at the top level.

I too would like to see some club involvement along the lines of awareness to the slippery slope of decline that can easily befall any player - it even happened to one of the best players on the planet - George Best finished top flight football at 27 due to the demon drink.

Now I like a few gallons of the Nigerian Lager myself, but I tell you what, it never interfered with my working career because of the fear I would have been shown the door rather smartish.

I don't think you can put curfews or anything on players, if you live in a democracy you can't preach fascism. As was said earlier, they need to be brought up in a way that teaches them how to live outside the game. If they fail then the clubs have done all they can to make sure they don't. I don't mind a player going out and having a drink either, everybody needs to blow off steam and I don't go with this "they're paid big wages to do a job, not go out drinking" mentality. It's obviously the ones that go over the top, they need to be helped. The club tried to help Thornton but I'm afraid he was a lost cause, no love for the game and would rather be out pissing his pay cheque up the wall. That's fine, the club are guilt free but he has to look at himself in a mirror in 10-20 years time and think "what the hell did I do".

The manager at the club needs to show tough disipline as well as the parents of the individual if there going down the wrong road. However I would of thought the parents of Thornton were not around or possibly interested or cared enough to show there son the right path. Just my oponion that is.

Would Thorton of pissed away his career under Ferguson at Utd? Chances are not as high as he would of structured a solution to the problem with everyone concerned involved with his every day life. However, its down to the individual I guess. (Lee Sharpe failed Fergys guidance and Beckhams wife couldn't stop in at night) so they went.
