In this case in particular, I'd like to think most referees would see that as a fine tackle and it's just Friend who's feckless.
I agree. Anyone who saw the game last weekend will know that Kevin Friend is a plank.

look closely both feet left the ground, red card offense, harsh i know but thats the rules
Don't blame the ref, blame Adam for pretending he'd been pole axed.
Refs are on a hiding to nothing with players diving and cheating.
Easy with slow motion replays isn't it?
It's bad. Tackling is a dying art in the sport, I remember being brought up at Highfield Road and Paul Williams, Killer and many others used to get stuck right in and you might get a talking too if it was terrible, nowadays if you get a strong challenge it's a red card.
Must have missed the press release where Football was deemed a non-contact sport.
Robbo refs don't make the laws the governin g bodies do, yes they make mistakes , so do players , having cameras from all angles and slow mo makes them mistakes look even worse, one of the problems is the fast tracking of young refs to the top, refs should learn their trade and shouldn't be picked on their youthful
looks.

I understand that TSB my frustrations are just as much aimed at the FA then anyone else, however inconsistency is one of the most frustrating aspects of refereeing and I am sorry to say that Mr Friend is hugely inconsistent.
He is one of the poorest referees in this country, up their with Trevor Kettle and Darren Deadman IMO.

As I said, refs are the easy target. Cheating players are the problem.
Might have been a red card offence because it was the rules, but tbh it's shocking to see players get sent off for something like that.

Fair Tackle decision will be rescinded and the player will be free to play with no ban

I think this guy is a poor referee and that is it. Lets be honest the challenge Blair Adams did was far worse.
As for the physical contact thing in general things have been improved by eliminating a lot if the dreadful destructive forces we have seen.
The likes of Messi would not exist if we still had the assassins that went by the charming named of "chopper" or "bite your legs" - we should be grateful that laws have eliminated those from the modern game.
I am not convinced about Blair's challenge he wins the ball first and then his foot goes over the ball, the intent was for the ball?

Would you have accepted it the other way round - I wouldn't.
Webster also was a clear sending off.
Fleck was a clear penalty.
Wilsons booking was a joke.
He is a terrible referee. That will be exposed far more this weekend than last.
Red card offence apparently.
Is that genuinely the tackle? WTF?
You seem surprised

Seen the challenge now, and if that's a red card then we may aswell announce the ending of the game of football! If you can no longer challenge for (and win) the ball, then what's the point?
It's OK Poyet asking for an apology, but that ref will probably have one week away from the top flight, only to return the following week, while Sunderland need to find an extra point or three in their remaining fixtures! Decisions like that cost managers their jobs and clubs their league status.
I think refs should be interviews after the game to justify why they make decisions.
