Captain and vice-captain. Played their part this year and they seem to get more out of the players around them but both had poor games and are getting on a bit. would you give them another season?

Yes. We can't afford not to.

I think there is some severe delusion on this board (not you Sleepy) that we're somehow in a position to upgrade multiple key positions in the team.

I hope we continue to play in this aggressive style and Kelly and McFadz are a big part of that. Dike certainly knew McFadz was there on Sunday.

I agree a massive part of our success last couple of years has been the spine of leaders with fadz Kelly and godden. The only way I’d be happy to let them go is if robins felt he could upgrade the players without losing that leadership.

Agreed.

People want us to upgrade Shipley/Allen/Biamou/Baka etc. We can't upgrade all them AND Kelly/Fadz/Hyam/Marosi etc

Pretty much every summer other than the one just gone (probably affected by covid) we’ve seen the team completely change. I wouldn’t rule it out.

They highlight the importance of leadership in a football team. Especially a team that is in a relegation scrap like ourselves.

Although, if we’re to progress in the Championship, we really do need upgrades on these players.

If they’re starters next season our ceiling is 17th. Neither are good enough on the ball for the Championship.

James for Kelly seems like when Kelly took the reigns from Doyle. An experienced centre back slightly younger and better than mcfadzean would be high on list of priorities for the summer I think.

We’re 3 points from 14th as things stand now... it’s not even our ‘ceiling’ now.

Honestly wouldn't be surprised if Robin's does a Michael Doyle on Kelly. I love Kelly and what he's done for us but you need better than someone who's going to aimlessly lob the ball forward from time to time during matches at this level.

First mission in the Championship is to somehow stay in it, we're almost there. Next step is to see how we improve on that. I'm not convinced starting Kelly in such a key position is going to allow us to do that.

Be mad to get rid of Kelly. Fadz I'd keep around albeit he wouldn't be in my first team plans.

Found it hilarious how people have hated McFadz all season, even going mental about the handball penalty and completely ignoring everything before that situation.

I think it depends on how we want to play going forwards.

Undoubtedly, we’ve been more direct and feeding off of other teams mistakes. If we intend to play this way going forward, he can add a lot of value to the team defensively.

If Fadz didn’t have the clangers he’d have played at this level his whole career, the bloke is an unbelievable defender.

Kelly clearly very important to the team, though limited at this level.

McFadz has only slightly been behind Ostigard in terms of defenders this year for me, which is some good going. Yes hes made mistakes and is getting older, but I'm convinced he would head a bowling ball back if someone threw it up for him. If we had a 3rd CB just as good as him as Osti, we would be in a much better position this season.

Don't think there's anything wrong with McFadz passing, perhaps his split second decision making but not the actual execution, if we're going for a more direct, aggressive style I think the danger of mistakes and the need to be great on the ball becomes greatly reduced. Just not going to get players at this level, or within our budget, who defend like Osti and McFadz do but also consistently knock 60 yard passes around.

Kelly's medium/long passing has been exposed in the last couple of games but there also won't be many teams that play as high a line as Barnsley were. It's odd because Kelly's mid-range diagonal passing was superb last year, perhaps he's not fully up to speed after his own injury issues or maybe just the speed and reduced time/space in the Championship is showing.

Less the passing for McFadz and more the habit of being caught on the ball.

Maybe I’m just hoping we don’t become Barnsley Mk2 next season and spend all year lumping the ball from back to front. Maybe I’m naive.

With 12 points left to play for, it obviously suggests that 17th is not our ceiling. Not to mention both our top scoring strikers haven’t been fit for most of this season.

With the right additions, we’ll be decent mid table outfit with a solid foundation.

No, us being above 17th would suggest that and IIRC we’ve managed that once for one game all season. Look I’d love is to win the last four games and storm to mid table, but let’s be realistic, we’re unlikely to win 7/8 of our last games. We’ll likely finish 17th at best and if we don’t it’ll be more down to getting results when everyone else is on the beach than our true level over the season.

I agree completely with your last paragraph. I just think one of those additions is someone who can play DM without another player holding their hand.

Absolutely, give Fadz another year and Kelly a couple both have proven their worth at this level and there is no way you can rip that experience and leadership out of a squad without a massive investment and risk to destabilizing the squad .

We are not going to be able to overhaul the whole squad and those 2 are pretty low on the list of who need upgrading.

For me we need:

GK first choice. sell one of the others

CB x2, a starter to replace Osti and someone to challenge the other 3.

LB (can't see McCallum being allowed back for a 3rd season?)

CM James hopefully

AM someone to compete with O'Hare

ST need someone who is different than we have. a Target man probably. I have faith in Godden and Walker being more than capable if injury free

I would love a couple of young players with pace in on loan to give us options

What? I’d be more than happy to swap places with them. We have made a lot of mistakes this season by trying to play it around in defence. Yet, we’ve madequite a few of our goals by forcing errors from teams trying to play it from the back, the best example being against Brentford (H).

We should be looking at an experienced CB as I think faz will become a squad player mostly on the bench, unless he decides he wants to play regular football elsewhere. But who would bet against him having another decent season? Tough one for MR's.
Kelly, absolutely. First team player, very important to the side.

If success at this level is 46 games of the shite we watched on Sunday, sign me up for L1 yo yo team.

Barnsley will get found out soon enough and even their biggest fan on here thinks it won’t be enough to get them past the actual teams of quality. We need to be building as a footballing side if we want solid foundations, not just buying a big man and lumping it up for 90 mins each week.

Hell yes, keep both, they should be cheap enough to keep.
Although in an ideal world theyd start on the bench.
Unless we have major funds to spend, I'd keep them for their experience and game management skills. (But not Fadz's red card and penalty skills)
Our priority should be signing Ostigard and James, and improving our attacking options, and bringing in an experienced keeper.

We’re 18th now and Biamou has been our main striker this season. He’s had some good games here and there, but does not have a killer instinct in front of goal.

I have no doubt in my mind that had Godden played as many games as Biamou, we’d be higher up the table. This season, he’s 1 in 3.5 games, and frankly, he’s looked off the pace most of the time he’s played. We have absolutely missed that clinical finishing all season and have had glimpses of it from Walker, who’s had his own struggles.

In my mind, our biggest priority in this transfer window is the defence, primarily securing Ostigard and a LWB.

Kelly is fine, he’s good enough defensively to add value as a starter.

I agree with this! Priority is replacing the peripheral senior players with guys who can contribute more to the first team, that might mean McFadzean dropping down the pecking order, but should keep him.

We have too many not playing that should be allowed to move on...

Think results wise direct play is better and I'm less nervous as not playing out from the back. Also winning teams keep the level of grounds full.
On moving on Kelly ,McFadz you never no with robins what's up his sleeve, hope he keeps them.

I might be wrong but I fail to see how we could get Osti to sign for us. Brighton have a year option, if they trigger it then would they re-loan him to us? if they don't im sure he will attract bigger offers than we can match. Our only hope is that he has fallen in love with the place which is hard to believe seeing as we don't have a 'Place' or fans to get attached to :/ im not hopeful but really hope im wrong
