I've only read Remains of the Day but I've read several interviews hes done over the years.......saw his little interview on the tellybox last night......he looked close to tears when talking about missed opportunities, for example not noticing when love comes around...
Think i'm gonna get a copy of the collection of interviews/conversations thats knocking about as an E-book as many things hes said in interviews resonate with me........possibly due to being uprooted at an early age.....
"I have a sense of having just left without saying goodbye, and of this whole other world just kind of fading away. … I have the feeling of this completely alternative person I should have become. There was another life that I might have had, but I am having this one."
He's one of the new young writers of the 80s who all write in a similar style: Ian McEwan; Martin Amis and Salman Rushdie. I believe they are all mates. I think I have read all of his books apart from the new childrens' one about a giant. Most people will have seen the movie "The Remains of the Day" and possibly also the more recent movie "Never Let Me Go".

I remember saying that Charles Dickens was my favourite author and the group of people I was with looked at me as if I was joking. Probably not trendy enough !

In my wild past and I was banged up in Winson Green nick in Brum in the 80's,three to a cell. We were allowed to go to the library so I came back with a couple of Dickens novels. My cell mates both were reading comics ! They thought I was posh because I was reading David Copperfield !
