Southampton preparing £3m bid for Lukas Jutkiewicz

SOUTHAMPTON are preparing to swoop for Coventry City’s Lukas Jutkiewicz, the striker who got away from St Mary’s a decade ago.
Although the Saints are five points clear at the head of the Championship table – with a cushion of eight points plus a vastly superior goal difference on third-placed Middlesbrough – manager Nigel Adkins is looking to bolster his squad for the second half of the season.
And one of his prime targets is Jutkiewicz, who was born in Southampton and played in their Academy alongside the likes of Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale until he was 13.
Adkins would ideally like to secure him on loan before Thursday’s deadline with a view to a full-time switch in the New Year.
And although the Sky Blues, severely weakened by the summer exodus from the Ricoh, can ill afford to lose another of their prime assets, they may be tempted by the opportunity to make a substantial profit.
Jutkiewicz cost £300,000 when he arrived from Everton in July last year and is currently rated in the £2-3million bracket, underlining his progress during City’s 4-2 defeat against his home-town club when he added his sixth goal of the season to a typically whole-hearted display.
Although the Sky Blues rebuffed Middlesbrough’s offer for Jutkiewicz earlier this year, chairman Ken Dulieu – recently installed as director of football – could now try to whip up a bidding war.
Jutkiewicz would certainly relish the opportunity to swap the Sky Blues’ relegation battle for a push for the Premier League with the club he supported as a child.
But Coventry’s fans would be furious at any more departures, especially in light of tonight’s match against Cardiff City which sees the return of recent favourites Ben Turner and Aron Gunnarsson.
