Some of my family are off to Florida next week, or so they hope. Me and the mrs had to pull out which is a shame, but life got too expensive for us to pay our way.

My old man is having kittens over all this news though.

Should be okay. Half term has brought extra traffic and I think that was the straw that broke the camel’s back so to speak. Where are they flying from? Think that makes a difference also. Some airports have struggled more than others.

Next round. What’s your poison tonight?

Got myself some of that Captain Morgan’s Sliced Apple rum. It’s much better than Jim Beam’s and Jack Daniels Apple whiskey.

Yes I really should have sampled prior to buying a litre.
However I'm slowly dealing with it.

It’s not the worst. Just if you took the labels off and asked me if it was flavoured, I’d have said no.

Mixed feelings about the monarchy really. Clearly it stems from an antiquated and outdated class system which, functionally, has no place in the modern world.

However, there's something to be said about having one constant leadership figure throughout all of the shit shows over the last 70 years. In reality, given it's a constitutional monarchy, they don't actually have a huge amount of authority - more of just a nod to the past and provide some semblance of stability.

I think the cultural bond the monarchy maintains between the Commonwealth of Nations is powerful too is probably under appreciated. It will be sad when Elizabeth dies - It obviously wont be the same with Charles and will probably start the timer for the end of the whole thing. Think the only hope it has would be to give it to Will but that's not happening.

It’s either that or talk about how the queen bailed her son out of nonce claims.

Losing Phillip has probably really taken a lot out of her.

And having to deal with Boris on a weekly basis would be exhausting for anyone.

Christ, Charles looks terrible. Surely need to be thinking about giving it to William (how does that work exactly…would he have to abdicate??). Nobody will respect or accept the bloke and it will put an already quite precarious arrangement over the edge. Not because he looks terrible by the way, although that doesn’t help….

I think the only issue I'd have here is that there's a common misconception that our royalty have no input into how our parliament conducts business, when in reality that's not quite true:

Royals vetted more than 1,000 laws via Queen’s consent

Exclusive: secretive procedure used to review laws ranging from Brexit trade deal to inheritance and land policy
www.theguardian.com

and...

Revealed: Queen lobbied for change in law to hide her private wealth

Monarch dispatched private solicitor to secure exemption from transparency law
www.theguardian.com

This doesn't feel right to me at all, and puts the lie to a constitutional monarchy with no actual power.

I'd like to see this and other quirks of government (like those recently exploited by the Prime Minister, prorogation, standards in office etc.) resolved by a proper written constitution. No one should be above the law, nor be able to influence it by virtue of having a royal title.

Really not getting this idea of skipping Charles for William. It's nonsensical.
Do you really think Charles has waited over 70 years just to abdicate? Farcical.
As things stand William will have to wait 20+ years by which time he will be in his 60s and the monarchy likely won't exist, at least in its current form.

Charles has been running the thing for the last decade anyway, so not entirely sure why people think he'd be so terrible. He's moderated in his old age anyway, and knows his duty. It'll be as you were whenever he takes over... unless he ends up too old to do anything, of course!

Harry and Meghan also booed today. The price paid for not following William’s example and being content with cutting ribbons and eating banquets

Are you saying you want there to be a choice in who inherits the throne next?

I don't understand what Charles has done that's so wrong, and what makes him a bad symbol anyway.

Notwithstanding, it's the people who choose to make it without power. the monarch, after all, has to give Royal Assent to all bills, and has to ask somebody to form the government. They also get consulted regularly by the Prime Minister. Theoretically, they can only give assent to bills they like, or advise on their changing, and they can ask anybody to form the government.

None of that is great.

As it happens the Queen, Charles, and William all recognise that flexing power means the end of their pay cheque. They're probably lucky that Harry was second son, however.

I don’t think Charles needs the civil list pay cheque somehow

The theoretical power argument is pretty pointless as the institution only survives due to impartiality
