I’ve become more conscious of just how poor the establishment has been of late. The likes of Andrew and Harry have done more damage to an already declining system. It doesn’t help that government is so poor either. The Commonwealth has been just a tad too successful in as much as several now want independence.

I think a slimmed down monarchy is the way forward. The country won’t put up with freeloaders like Andrew any more

It’s easy to bring the argument back to hereditary unfairness but that exists without the monarchy, here and around the world and will never change. Anti-royalists/republicans will always highlight the cost of the monarchy, however, nobody really knows what true benefit the monarchy brings/has brought us, whether through extra tourism, bringing the country together at certain times (24m people watched the Queens pandemic speech FFS) or things like soft power with world leaders who are usually falling over themselves to meet the Queen.

Im not convinced the monarchy lasts long term, certainly not in some commonwealth countries but whilst its here, it’s part of what makes our country and I think on balance probably for the better*…..however, even so, there was no way I was watching that ‘party’ last night !!!

*people like Johnson or Corbyn as an elected head of state…fuck that !

We don’t have a choice about much hereditary unfairness, we actually do in this specific case.

The old ‘President Blair’ argument? Well if the President is intended to be ceremonial it doesn’t need to be a politician.

Imagine what you would gain in revenue if the palaces and royal buildings were opened up for visitors? Quite a bit compared to having to just gawk at them from the outside. Tourists don’t come to see the Queen, they come to see the landmarks. France seem to do fine on the tourism count.

That before we get into the tax privileges afforded by the various duchies…

Of the many anti Royals on here, you all enjoyed the free bank holiday (although it looks like many of you spent the day arguing with G), you watched the concert to celebrate Her Majesty and have an informed critique on what Charles and William said.

As you were.

Kind of hard not to have a passive interest in it, regardless of one's opinion on the monarchy. It was pretty much everywhere.

I didn't actually watch the concert, but I dropped in on a bit of trooping the colour, and the flypast. I figure that since I helped pay for it I might as well see what it looked like.

Not quite the same level of cognitive dissonance as, say, clapping for the NHS and then voting Tory, imho.

where the queen lives is the biggest attraction in the uk in terms of visitors I think

Buckingham Palace is No. 69
Windsor Castle is No. 18

The much publicised £500m tourism boost is if you scrape the barrel and include any building with a slight royal connection. Compared to the total UK tourism revenue take though even that amount is tiny.

If you had the palace and castle fully open all year round you would almost certainly get more.

If you don't mind me asking Duffer, how old are you? We're you around for the silver Jubilee?
You say the jubilee is everywhere but I can remember the silver jubilee, and that really was everywhere, found this quite low key in comparison.

Ah so having been proven wrong again we go to deflection. Though the tourism argument even if true-and it isn’t-shouldn’t be the deciding factor.

Chester Zoo gets more visitors than Windsor Castle. So funnily enough does Edinburgh Castle.

I waved at the Queen as she went past on the A45 near Allesley, as I recall, though I doubt she'll remember me.

I remember more street parties but less on TV. I was at school so can't recall how much holiday we got, but I'd agree that it seemed like a big event, if shorter.

In those times though, it felt more like we lived in a community. Round the corner from the grandparents, in and out of the neighbours houses and gardens etc. etc..

It doesn't feel like that kind of town any more. I think England is a different place now, and perhaps not for the better.

I’m not proved wrong though - you stated it should open more. Buckingham palace has huge visitor footfall each day

Republics allow no visitors to the residency of the great leaders

If president Johnson and First Lady Carrie chose Windsor Castle as their primary residence would you complain when they banned visitors altogether?

Why would they use Windsor when they already have Chequers as an official country residence?

The state can choose wherever the ceremonial leader stays. The numbers are independently verified as well as from Tourism Britain. If you turned the palace into an open museum all year with all the artwork and collections hidden away in there you would get an enormous uptake.

The Tower of London is No. 9 by comparison

Blimey imagine how much money she could waste redecorating a building if that size, she would have to ask Sunak to pay for it.

Where’s the White House in America?

Also if president Johnson lived there with First Lady Carrie no one would be allowed in?

Well for example look at how many people pay to go to the Cistine Chapel or St Peter’s. The palace fully open to visitors could well surpass them.

The White House is a functioning seat of the executive branch. Though I think even if they were open to visitors Disney would still have them beat. We could go if you like

The argument is ridiculous through.

We’d still have a prime minister and a president would reside in a palace

Well it’s their choice - they will choose a royal residency as the French president has

You are on a total loser argument anyway - while you were watching a shite American film series last night seemed everyone else was tuning into the palace

The PM would continue to have No. 10 and Chequers. The president could live literally anywhere-especially given the vast number of buildings currently classified as royal residences.

I wonder why? Parents 5 weeks holiday 40 hours a week. Teachers 18 weeks holiday 30 hours a week. But we've a lost a day and I have my marking and lesson planning for those 5 year olds and I need another day and 10% more pay because someone else is getting it.
