I also don’t find his personality particularly endearing. Thats really important to me.

Yes he could do a job as godden replacement - but like others said, feels we’ve moved beyond that level.

Tavares is not the replacement either (he’s not good enough)

Were we to sign the midfielders we are linked with would it not be the case in the context of a Simms injury that Wright starts central and EMC starts on the left ? Don't see the point of signing Windass

Who would be on the bench when we need fresh legs up front ?

We know Godden plans to leave, and Tavares isn’t proven .

I think of the times our squad has been depleted due to injury/fatigue and the impact that had on key games over the past 2 seasons.

Not sure what was so funny about asking a question I'd already answered.

I'd already said 6 but to enlighten you more and to get you a punchline for your unspoken joke :

First goal was in DECEMBER.

So over the season, God played an equivalent 3 full games more and scored 3 more goals. And has a better goals/mins played ratio.

Only thing that bothers me is that we're being linked with all these quality players. But how deep is our warchest ?

Marko of NZ 5m Euros, the Swiss midfielder (Andreas ?) 2m Euros. Browne won't leave Preston for less than 1m.

We're not going to be able to buy them all. So where do we cut back and buy beneath ourselves to ensure squad depth for the season ?

I don’t think we have to worry about Browne. Heard he’s likely picking Sheff Utd.

He is out of contract on 1/7, but instead of paying a transfer fee (to Preston), we'll likely have to pay him ££ to sign up.

Will be, contract ends 30 June. Sounds daft and illogical but if Robins wanted him in and settled for preseason, we'd have to buy him. Otherwise, he'd be behind the other players in fitness training.

He's been in Ireland getting married. If he wants to keep his new family settled, makes sense to stay local to his current area. He's been at Preston for the last decade. This could also be his last playing contract so fits the staying in area scenario.

Nah, Tav is still raw and had been out for almost a year. Don't think anyone can genuinely judge his ability or potential on what we've seen so far.

Correct, start of July.

Hypothetically, if, and its a massive IF, Browne signed at the beginning of July once his Preston contract had ended, how long would it take him to find a house, move in, get settled before starting at a new club with new teammates and procedures ?

Took our newcomers a few months this past year. Admittedly, some changed countries but Simmo, Lati, Thomas and Kitch didn't hit the ground running (some argued on here that Simmo couldn't run at all) and they were English transfers. So Robins would likely want him in and started as soon as possible to get him up to pace.

But I get your point.

Always trust in Robins. He seems to know what he's doing

It is not just how deep the warchest is? It is how it all fits in with the financial regulations and not incurring points deductions through overspending.

Recruiting is a complex business and players and agents don't like making quick decisions. Managers want to get players in early but that is not how the transfer window works.

What an idiotic comment. Apart from van Ewijk he was our best player for the time he was on the pitch against Man United.

I don't get what people get out of writing comments like this.

I know. Warchest is an inclusive name. Yes, it is often used to mean only funds to cover the transfer fee but it also includes wages and potential addons. They all come out of our available finances. So that in itself ties in with FFP and overspending.

And timeliness of the transfers wasn't mentioned in my post.

I was more concerned about how far our funds will stretch and when do we have to curb our desires and buy low and beneath what we should be to fill squad gaps within FFP. An example would be while we'd love Mbappe or Messi, funds won't stretch so we'd have to look at the likes of Windass who would fill the role (albeit unsatisfactorily) and be cheaper overall.

As Herts said, before his injury forced him off, he was starting to look good in the Semifinal. And had good bit parts against Oxford, Maidstone and Wolves.

He is slowly growing into games. And that would hopefully continue. So do you stick with him and let him continue to build with this team or ship him off to get game time with a lower league club, but not at the same technical level as us ?

I'd keep Tavares and see what happens, was starting to look decent. If we're well stocked he might benefit with a league 1 loan and an option to recall in January.

Since Godden scored 1 goal after September in the league so that’s pretty bad. Which, given our form was significantly better than Sheff Wednesday and that Windass is not primarily a striker, is pretty bad. Sheffield Wednesday’s form picked up after they hired Rohl so under a better manager Windass could probably get more output.

It is difficult to predict if not impossible to say how far the funds will stretch due to ongoing transfer negotiations or offers coming in for players we already have? It is an ever changing picture.

I would imagine there is a budget to spend linked to each of the various positions ie FB CB CM AM.
Then a contingency fund to push a little more if we really want someone.

But there must come a time when you have to say no deal and move to another target.

It was interesting listening to Paul Warne on Talksport saying how difficult it is to get deals done this time of the year and how much work goes into it. It is just a series of on going conversations, some since January. You want players in, fans expect players to come in but agents and players just keep you waiting.

Despite a few good cameos at the end of the season I think it’s best for both parties if he finds a new club now. I would imagine there would be a lot of league 1 clubs interested.

He's only got a year left on his contract, I don't see the value in loaning him out. May as well keep him here as he's a usefull player to have on the bench when you need a bit of pace and fresh legs, and he's cover for when Sakamoto needs a breather.

And he's not going to be on the highest of wages, so he's a relatively cheap squad member, If he impresses he could get offered another contract, if he doesn't he's released next summer.

Tough one. Yes, and no. Realistically, as it’s been exhaustively covered here, he needs a season in L1 or L2 to sharpen up and get some experience.

Although, as he’s shown this season in glimpses, he’s already improved his overall game.

Personally, I’d send him out on loan, get a back-up striker to replace Godden, and get him back a better player in a years time.

He’s only got a year left on his contract and he’s the same age as Simms (23) so he’s not a youth u21s player anymore.

If he goes on loan then he’s basically gone for good.

I see what you mean, and I suppose it is make or break for him with us (in light of the one year left on his contract), however I would say that not all players develop and ‘peak’ in their ability before the age of 25.

Still, who knows. All we can do is speculate, but I’d like to see how he progresses with a season out on loan. Then it’s either ta ta, or a contract offer.

We've seen the lengths agents and players go to to get what they want. We only have to look as far back as Vik and Gus.

And I can understand the frustrations of management with having to wait and then play around with deals as others have come through faster and taken the finances ahead of your expected target.

Don't begrudge the efforts of Dean Austin and his team. Or Robins who has the final say below DK.

Bet they'll all be happier when they can sit back (not literally) when the season actually starts and this period is behind them.

I don't think fan appreciate that it can take two or even three windows to land a target sometimes. Dean Austin and his team aren't just active during the window. Paul Warne was saying he has weekly meetings and reports with his recruitment team throughout the season.

Yes this window is the most hectic but it is an ongoing process. Paul Warne also stressed he prefers players who are open to playing in more than one position as it gives you more tactical options.

I'm sure lots of players would be open to playing in more than one position. Being able to do so to maximum effect is another. Lati plays in lots of positions but is he good enough at any of them to be first choice?

I tend to find players that play in many positions tend to be back up and the reason they play so many positions is because they aren't quite good enough at any particular one of them.
