Safe to say he's not got a future here now surely?

Right backs played at left-back, and now Maatsens injured we've gone and brought another one

Shame had great potential apparently

Does anyone know whats happened with him?

Not sure how long he has on his contract but I would suggest he needs a loan somewhere with regular playing time then we re-assess him when he returns.

100% needs a loan. he's had 12 months now (of which 3 he was injured) physically getting up to speed and learning what we want from him. He surely now needs to go out and put it into practice.

This idea that a player is going to go out on loan and magically come back ready for the first team....people say it all the time, but it just doesn't happen very often does it?

No, but regular senior football even in L2 has to beat the U23s

Helps development a bit though, also sees how they do under pressure too.

If he's just sitting around kicking his heels here, he may as well get some first team games. Only reason to keep him here would be if they wanted to spend more intensive time coaching him, I guess.

It's largely irrelevant what standard of football he's playing at this point - in all likelihood, the coaching staff have already decided he's not going to make the cut, and an extended audition at Newport County realistically isn't going to change that. Loan him out if it frees up some wages, by all means. But this idea that Reid/Tavares etc can prove themselves to be key players if they just go out on loan enough doesn't really work for me.

Who's the last player of ours who forced their way out of exile and into our first team thanks to a loan spell?

That isn’t the point. The more exposure he gets at a better standard the more likely someone gives us a return or at least some cash.

The higher up we go the less likely youth products are going to break through right away than before

He needs to go out and experience the physical rigour of league football… not the exhibition style of the U23’s IMO. Who’s to say he won’t go and shine in a League 1/2 team and be ready to challenge for a place on his return.

Who was the last player we sold for a fee after we loaned them out then?

I'm not saying loans are pointless - I just think they're only valuable for a select few players. People on here just lazily throw out 'He needs a loan' as the catch-all solution for any kid they haven't seen play yet, but the club seems to use them as crowd control more than anything.

Haha yes, that one goal in 17 games for Kettering really propelled him into the manager's thinking!

I think for someone we brought in to develop and hopefully sell for a profit or at least break even, all we have done if anything is have him play at a lower standard than he was at before. Getting time in a ‘proper’ league makes sense if nothing else but to give him a fair crack.

Heck even Hilssner got interest in L2

Sending Reid back to Scotland would be like Norwich having sent Maddison back here for another whole season

It worked though didn't it cuz it kicked his arse into gear. Work hard or your gonna be slumming it in non league. Where's Wilson now?

Eccles went to Gillingham and came back ready to play in our championship first team, it's only injury that's halted that.

Most players go on out on loan to get first team experience unless they're very special like maddison for us who went straight in. Even Norwich loaned him out to Aberdeen to toughen up. It is a process that works

Agree if he's to be loaned it needs to be English football. Back to Ross County wouldn't do him any good I don't think

Well that’s nonsense - Wilson was going to be released and was it Pressley ehk
Offered a chance. It wasn’t a kick up the arse just a change in position - Regis was crap in tbe first two years he but another manager got a change in tactics and confidence. Shipping someone to Cheltenham town does none of that

I don’t look too much into the Bidwell deal. I look more into the Derby game. Dabo not fully fit and having a stinker. We still persevered with a round peg in a square hole. Spoke volumes to me.

Still think he's got a chance of making it at cov tbh. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. But he's gotta nail this loan spell.

If it’s a young player with a viable path to the first team in the future, if you can match them with a team who will commit to playing them every week and/or in a system comparable to the parent club’s, then it’s worthwhile. Tom Bilson is the one who springs to mind. But the vast majority of our loans are just farming people out to manage the squad numbers and prune the wage bill.
