There was no premier league sides after Eccles. unless ( and I hope he does) he goes up another gear he’s a good squad player, there’s signs there he could be class, just needs to do it more often,

You'd have to say he's been better than sheaf this season though

Have been calling him Jocc Eshles ever since the Stoke game when Oggy was doing it post match. Even my deaf head dad picked up on it.

I think Eccles is really developing to be a decent player and he does deserve a better contract with us.

On the other hand, I don’t understand the timing with no manager in place to say yes or no. Feels like a PR stunt and a chance for Doug to be centre stage infront of the cameras again after another PR own goal on Saturday.

start of this season if sheaf was fit and playing his best and we had brought a midfielder in we were crying out for would Eccles start, not sure ? Can’t fault him so far, gives everything,

Id imagine it’s been in the works for a while. Maybe even had nod from Lampard

Either way he deserves it. Local lad that loves the club and playing the best football of his career, I can’t imagine any head coach/manager would’ve pulled the new deal so just get it done

To me it feels like a sensible financial decision based on the number of first choice midfielders we currently have, his rate of development over the last two seasons and the number of minutes he is playing now.

Lati, of all people, did it a couple of times against Sunderland but in general its lacking from our play.
We must now have at least 3 players in the squad who you'd think would thrive off that type of ball.

This isn’t a surprise seeing as they were signed with the plan of Hamer in the middle. The few games he was here you could see that.

Would people (not you @Earlsdon_Skyblue1 ) be happy to let Sheaf go and bring in a more expansive and dynamic midfielder with Eccles taking over the DM role? If that’s what King is insisting on theoretically.

I'd be fucking ecstatic. Especially if could still get 15 mil, (which we won't now).

100% - as well as Sheaf and Eccles have been playing over the last 12 months, they haven’t filled that Hamer shaped void in our midfield.

Eccles deserves a lot of credit because his last two assists (Thomas v Boro and Bassette on Saturday) were fantastic crosses. He really thrives in that aspect of the game.

I still feel that we need another profile of player in the midfield because Sheaf and Eccles are too similar and that slows us down at times. It becomes particularly evident when we play lower table teams who just dig their heels in.

If the money brought in could allow us to bring in 2 to replace Sheaf and Allen then sure.

Do you think Eccles best position is a 6 is I guess what I’m asking really?

I rate Sheaf, he hasn't been as good this season, think the injuries have affected him, but he was one of our best players on Saturday. However, no player is irreplaceable (well Gus seems to be) so if we could bring in a better player in to improve the team then I'm happy to let anyone go.

I definitely think he can play there and would be happy for him to play there if we bought someone in the Hamer mould.
But if we got the right fee for Sheaf what's to say we couldn't bring in a Hamer type and a specialist number 6.

Just saying you can’t fit Eccles, Torp, Rudoni, a six and an eight in all at once. Probably only 3 of the 5.

They'd all be needed and get a decent amount of games in a succesful Championship season.
We've often been short of midfield bodies since we returned to the championship, be good to have a really strong pool for once.

Only because you tagged me, imagine if we had sold him in the summer for a realistic (and more modest amount) as I was saying we should...

We would have been able to use that money to buy a better midfield, be higher in the league, and maybe Robins would still be here.

He didn't want to go.
We could have tried to force him out for the money, (has happened often in the past), but we didn't, and equally he could have dug his heels in.

One things for sure, his value has dropped, and I'd say quite dramatically.

I remember the good old days when the number 6 plays long side the number 5 both Centre Half's.

And the number 4 would be the defensive midfielder i.e Ernie Machin ,Lloyd McGrath, Michael Doyle.

Michael Doyle wore 17 when signed the first time in 2003/04 and continued with it for the next season. The season afterwards
(2005/06) He moved to number 8 and was captaining that season if my memory serves. Then he wore 8 until he was loaned out to Leeds in 2009/10. He then had 8 again when he returned in League 2 in 2017/18. I am a bit of a Doyle fan if you can not tell and was my favourite player after McSheffrey left in 2006.

TLDR: Doyle did not wear 4 for us. He wore 17 and then 8

Fascinating, I was talking about the days when we only had one to eleven on the shirts, if Michael Doyle had been playing back in them days he would have been the number four.

May I also add Terry Yorath was a good number 4 for us.
