I don’t think playing transfers to coaching tbh. I always said the best teachers are those that had to learn their subject and weren’t gifted from an early age. They had to improve. They know what it’s like to not be elite. Some of the worst teachers I’ve had have been the brightest in their subject.

Also in football there’s a weird think where attacking players seem to be defensive managers and visa versa.

I’m going to go against the majority here but for me, if we are going to aim for top 6 / top 2 over the next few seasons then Eccles isn’t the answer

Decent squad player but for me lacks aggression and is too safe on the ball.

If Lampard (assuming) comes in then hopefully he can take Eccles up a notch

And yes, I go to about 90% of games home and away.

If Eccles lacks aggression, then we really are in the .
He is the most aggressive player we have.

Certainly one of them. Lati too and Bassette seems to be a bit that way as well.

I just wish he'd stop getting stupid booking for dissent

Agree, O'Hare was terrible and I think a lot is down to Eccles being at him

I wish some of the others would step up when we’ve got shit refs like today.

He is our most improved player and now a better playmaker than Sheaf and just as good defensively.

Now just needs to learn how to engage with the refs. I like the fact he is doing it, he just needs to learn how to do it without getting a yellow.

Because of his role he is likely to get a booking for a mistimed tackle. He doesn't need them for gobbing off to the ref.

Improves more and more all the time, just when you think he’s a decent player he comes out and proves he has potential to be a very very good CM

Well apart from Vik which now looks achievable for anyone, but maybe Lampard could have made the Ayeri loan work, I wonder if we'll see another loan off Brighton after him tbf.
We all see Vik from Brighton as an own goal but maybe it wasn't and a bit of a leg up?

Happy for him with the new contract. I think he's a great player.

Over 100 Championship appearances and he's not even 25 yet. He's one of the first names on the team sheet for me.

I think he deserves his new contract and he's been our best player so far this season. Others may have had a game or patch where they've shone but Eccles has done his job consistently well, week in week out and is starting to show good leadership qualifies too. If Lampard does come in as manager, I hope it's an opportunity for Josh to benefit from coaching from a top international midfielder, who had a great knack for scoring goals. Josh seems the sort of person and player who would want to seize that opportunity and not see it go to waste

If Hamer had produced a ball in like his for the first, the "we need better than him if we're aiming for top 6 or higher" crew would be creaming their pants

Not that one but one of his others was the first pass I’ve seen including from Sheaf or anyone else since Hamer left that’s made me do the “ohhh” sound. So good to see him trying those sorts of balls, we’ve been lacking it so much. Everything is safe and simple and obvious, no one willing or able to switch it or hit a diagonal from deep.

Agree, we need somebody capable of switching play in midfield, there were a few instances on Saturday where we had a player in space on the opposite wing but it takes us a bit too long to get the ball to them.

Lati, of all people, did it a couple of times against Sunderland but in general its lacking from our play.
We must now have at least 3 players in the squad who you'd think would thrive off that type of ball.

Noticed Lati practicing it in the warm up, but it's still needed in midfield

Really good this season, arguably player of the season so far although that's a low bar... possibly Wright as i dread to think where we'd be without his goals. But yeh great so far, would just like to see both and him and Sheaf chip in with more goals.

To paraphrase some older posts about his last contract extension “bad decision, too injury prone, not as good as Shipley”…

Good player. Got better too, works hard, doesn’t give up. My only disappointment is that the club used old pictures of him in the announcement just now, instead of photoshopping loads of £50 notes around him.

Brilliant news. Game has improved again this year, range of passing in particular. My player of the season so far although there’s not much competition.

Fabulous news. I think he's an excellent player.

I can't get my head round anyone thinking he's only League one level. It's insane.
