Simms played well and was a focal point for us which we don’t really have. He needed a big chance and didn’t get one.

I thought Allen played well but think it’s a good game to play Eccles and Sheaf. Had COH not had a stormer, I’d have leaned towards a 4-3-3.

Really? And he did have a big chance from van Ewijk's cross in the first half but missed the ball.

We were, first half there were a few occasions where Brum had lots of space to exploit but they just weren't good enough to do it

If wright wasn’t so greedy one of his second half chances he could of squared to simms for a tap in

Looked far far better without him last night. He does the basic stuff well, very tidy where that’s concerned, today was the first time in a while that we’ve advanced the ball consistently like we did last year and played with some tempo. Sheaf, Allen and o’hare all look to make things happen with th ball, Eccles doesn’t.

Don't agree. When Brum broke at us we were wide open, and a better opposition would of scored from one of those breaks. Robins gambled, and it worked, but he shouldn't be risking that against Soton. Eccles mops up so much in that CM role.
For me, Eccles comes in for Allen on Weds, and play O'Hare as the AM. Harsh on Allen, but you can't not play O'Hare or Sakamoto.

I think we’d miss Allen less with Cal in anyway as he offers a lot of the same running.

Would be a great way to score in a game but it would cost a fortune in corner flags

I like Eccles but he’s not better than Sheaf, Ohare or Allen when they are fit.

He’s had a good season so far but we all know our midfield has been our Achilles heel this season.

Only if you're talking about the attacking midfield position in my view until the last match that is. CM has been our strongest position in my view.

Strongest? In most of the games we’ve surrendered leads it’s mostly because our midfield has lost control.

Eccles, Sheaf and Allen are all hard workers and good players, but only Sheaf stands a chance of playing for a Top 6 team in reality.

In terms of output, specifically goals and assists, they could all collectively be better.

They've all played regularly for a top six team.

I think what some people are forgetting when they say our midfield has struggled, is that due to injuries, we have often had one of our midfield players playing who has just been returning from injury so not at full match fitness. We now have more of them closer to full fitness, so I expect that area to improve as a result.

Alongside Hamer… Even Robins has said that it’s an area that needs improvement. The reason we’ve moved to 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 initially was because we regularly lost control in midfield. Something that happened a lot less when Hamer was playing for us.

Bottom line is this: Robins’ top priority in Jan/Summer 2024 is to get that ‘Hamer replacement’. Which, frankly, doesn’t suggest that is our strongest area.

Allen, Sheaf and Eccles are all solid contributors to the team. None of them have that creative spark Hamer did and it’s something we still miss.

Don't disagree - just saying that I expect us to improve in midfield with the existing group (injuries not withstanding)

I agree. The thing that rankles with me is that we actually lost some of this when he trotted up to take corners. Not only were they on the whole, ineffective, we also lost him in the box.

Wow .

Up until recently the back 3 were totally unprotected through the centre.

I think he just needed a rest. Our options in midfield have been limited due to injuries. I think he is a good player who is still developing.
