Swap Hillsner for Tavares then - good move or not?

Hilssner’s wages have cost us £750,000-what has Tavares’?

On cheap wages to be 4th or 5th striker, absolutely fine.

Better than big money wages on has beens like Waghorn, Kane and Kelly.

So you just put someone on the payroll who is no good and never will be at this level as they are cheap

it’s a bizarre argument - how’s it better than superior players like Waghorn anyway

You need bodies in, even if Eccles is a bit below what we are aspiring. When fit he does a job, might improve, and no doubt he's cheap (relatively).

What I don't want to see is us signing more big name championship has-beens who have questionable fitness and are on the slide. Waghorn a good professional but finished. Fear Paterson is a similar trap.

Understand the point here, don't personally think he's good enough and four years seems too much. However all football squads are full of players below the level (bar City). If he's good value for what he is, and he's happy to sign, then possibly not as bad as it seems.

He may be but 4 years is laughable for someone whose started 16 league games in 4 years

Waghorn has been a dreadful signing.

That's not quite the defence you think it is.

I doubt Eccles takes enough home a week to justify not taking the risk of giving him an extension to be honest

Low risk and high reward move, I think he has a high ceiling and was really starting to look the part before his injury - I’m in favour of this

Well it's easy with hindsight isn't it?

It's easy now to say Hilssner was a terrible signing. It's easy now to say O'Hare on a free was an incredible signing.

That's the nature of transfers, every single one is a risk v reward scenario.

For what it's worth I was not enthused by Waghorn's signing,

Eccles is regarded by those who matter and work with him every day as a real prospect who can go higher in the game, I think they are correct, do you respect their opinion ?
As length of contracts go we have had years of sisu giving one year and two year contracts leaving the manager present and in fairness previous with a juggling act every summer, we have I think it’s eleven out of contract this summer that’s ridiculous most will probably move on at no great loss but it’s too many hopefully with the new owner they can be replaced and they will need to be with better.

Suppose if you only judge it on the most recent season (due to his age) it's a very different picture.

Seems odd, no doubt, just trying to understand the thinking. It makes more sense than giving older players with no resale value, who earn decent cash, stupid length deals.

He's 22, and I don't think he's strung two consecutive good performances together. What have you seen that makes you say that?

Long contracts don't necessarily = good decisioning

Excellent point, and I would add a player who I think Eccles is just as good as at this age and went on to great things, Jordan Henderson.

Well that’s your opinion and you are entitled to it but it doesn’t count that’s the managers department, think I’ll go with his opinion.

Jeez! Bet he snapped their hand off! Squad player at best who can fill a couple of positions and do a job when required is all I’ve seen up till now. Hope for an improvement going forward-plenty of time to do so (4 years).

The club has had a game changing 48 hours new owner confirmed and that ‘orrible arse Fisher jettisoned out the club yet what attracts arses on here a 22 year old prospect getting a 4 year contract you couldn’t make it up.

I know there are those who thought Waghorn was Messi like against Wrexham, but he has been a truly disastrous signing. Two goals in 38 appearances and one of those was a penalty. And it's not like the evidence wasn't there before we signed him. Five goals in 32 in his last season at Derby.

Eccles is talented, and clearly highly rated. He's the right age unlike players like Waghorn, who I understand has commanded a heavy salary and contributednext to nothing. Before the latest injury Eccles was playing well, arguably the best player in the QPR match. If they believe his fitness problems are behind him this looks a good signing.

Waghorn was a signing on a two year contract, that’s the type of market Fisher & sisu had Robins shopping in, I thought he was okay until his shoulder injury but not been great since. He will be off in the summer.

Not a fan of 4 year contracts. It is a long time in football. Prefer 2 years with a one year option.

This is nothing to do with Josh. Glad we have offered him a contract and he has signed.

I'm pleased he's getting a new contract but have to echo how sensible offering him four years when he seems to suffer injuries all the time (he was injured quite a bit in the academy as well if I remember).

I think a 2+1 would have made more sense at this juncture.

Hope he can get over the problems and cement himself into the midfield over the next year or two.

Yep fair. Also think it’s ok question it. I don’t per se think it’s a mistake as he can do a job for us, but I don’t see much to say he’s going to play at a higher level.

So this “squad player at best” was selected for the Championship Team of the month in October playing out of position. The same month Gyokeres was also selected as the striker. Loads on here couldn’t believe we had paid money for Gyokeres 18 months ago. Perhaps those who are employed to train and manage the team have a better understanding than us as to what and who may be a success.

I like him, but not a fan of 4 years with his injury record. If he does well it will be ripped up and he'll get a better one, if he remains injury prone we're saddled. With some players I understand the risk of losing good players for free but he's under 24 and we'd get to a tribunal fee at worst case. I'd have certainly kept him for his potential but would have probably given him 2 years with a third in the club's favour.
