You can hardly compare him to CoH - it’s more akin to the ridiculous extensions for Godden and Kelly.

Because once again it's a lack of pragmatism from the club.

Eccles, as talented as he is, quite clearly has persistent injury issues which he can't seem to shake. Every single season he's been out for long periods which at this stage of his career should set off some alarm bells.

I doubt his issues are suddenly going to disappear.

Understandable why the club want to retain him but unsure why they couldn't have just offered him a 2 year extension with an option of a further year in their favour. It's still a fair contract to offer and ties him down for potentially 3 years - just with a bit more flexibility.

I get the point but unless the injuries all stem from the same underlying problem then you can't definitively say, I'm assuming they will have had some medical advice. I do agree that the contract (and we don't know if it doesn't) should have an initial term or at least some form of ability to terminate under certain conditions (as far as is possible under employment law).

Bit surprising to read he has made 19 appearances this season. I wouldn’t have thought it was anywhere near that but he did have that spell at right back.

He has only started 16 league games for us in his career to date

Glad to have him longer as we need to see how good he can be, and some signs have been decent. However, to have a contract for another four years from now given his injury record is absolutely bonkers. As others have said, a shorter contract with an option to extend would have made much more sense.

Hopefully this will work out, and best of luck to the lad, but equally if it doesn't then we'll be asking questions again. It would be frustrating to be here in two years with a player eating up wages as we have seen so often with others recently. Fingers crossed that doesn't happen.

Good for the lad but nar not for me. Hope this isn’t another player that drains the clubs resources sitting on the treatment table for four years.

Hope I’m proven wrong.

I agree, when is this club going to learn? When is it?

4 year contract for a player that has been with the first team since 2019 and contributing a handful of games due to not being good enough, injured or sitting on the bench. Another year or two max on a relevant salary I’d possibly except the thinking but four years.

I may be in the minority but I don’t see a player in Eccles like I do see in Burroughs. All about opinions but the club needs to stop dishing out long term contracts to players who haven’t deserved them. I may be harsh here but this industry must be the only one that rewards failure. He may be on £500 a week for example (he won’t) but it’s still a salary going out the club.

Let’s hope he sorts his injury problems out and becomes a regular automatic first team player.

hes an asset on probably very low wages for the level for 4 years. He has shown a lot of promise and shown he can compete at this level already when fit. Its not like when we were offering long contracts to Hillsner, Kastaneer, Dacosta, Jobello. We knew very little about them - we know Eccles at the very least for 4 years will be a good solid pro for us

Pleased with this, talented player with a good future.

Not surprising to see some moans in here though.

On the one hand we're poorly run because we have a load of players out of contract in the summer, yet at the same time offering 4 year deals to promising young players is ridiculous.

I'm definitely in the positive group about his contract. Age, talent, able to play in multiple positions. Yes, he's young and that probably does explain his injuries. He's still learning about the limits his body can accept and so experience will help him overcome or prevent a lot of breakdowns in future. But for now, he's starting to prove he's worthy of the shirt and with the exception of a couple of poor decisions, he's shown we need to secure his position before he's lured away (see Wilson, Maddison....).

And to be fair to the club, we don't and won't know the full details of the contract. 4 years may be the maximum term but there could be conditions to reduce that based around his ongoing fitness.

Seems a ridiculous decision considering the fact he is injured constantly. Bizarre.

Didn't you say you were desperate for Wilson to be dropped and Moore to come back in? How did that work out?

Not sure what relevance Lee Burge has to Josh Eccles but sums up how this forum is going recently. Make a comment and someone brings up something said like 6 years ago as if that's in anyway relevant or to try and get one over on someone.

Imagine he's cheap, which is probably the same reason we've dished out big contracts before.

State of some of you getting annoyed / moaning about a contract extension draining! It's not coming out of your pockets lads, chill.

As a player, jury is out as haven't seen enough of him in his actual position but I trust the staff who see him every day. They obviously think the risk / reward is worth the 4 year contract and they know a lot more than us.

They saw Hilssner every day in training for the last 5+ years before offering him a deal?

Wow the scouting network is even more impressive than I thought.

Hillsner was a mistake (a pretty big one). Theyve worked with Eccles for 3 or 4 years now so have a pretty good idea what hes about

I assume that like Jobello, DaCosta and Kasta it was about him being an overseas player and wanting to offer him more stability.

Yeah it's not remotely comparable to Hilssner, pretty ridiculous to try and compare the two.

Offering a 4 year deal on a player whose started 16 league games is not on the face of it very sensible is it

I don’t agree with it but if it’s not costing us much and they know the player well enough, it’s not in the same league as the failed overseas signings.

It’s the sane symptom though isn’t it? Securing cheap wage signings m

Swap Hillsner for Tavares then - good move or not?

Where have you been ? That’s how it works now puts value on him as for injuries that’s an occupational hazard unfortunately. Fingers crossed he’ll be fine.
