Agree with it or not, what has a comment about Margaret Thatcher got to do with the destruction of Coventry City FC?

If you follow that line, any one who has been critical of Winston Churchill must be partly responsible for the destruction of Coventry Cathedral.

I work for the Council and we've been taking calls from the public and angry at this. Thing is Mutton emailed Cllr Chater, then Chater accidently emailed every single Councillor that Thatcher should have been hung in the 80's from the flagpole on the council house - he accidently send it to all the Councillors, including the conservative ones.

What would happen if a council employee had have sent the email?

A few weeks after the talks went down the pan he said that hell would freeze over before SISU 100% ownership of the Arena, but I can't find that specific line..

IIRC Robo the 'hell would freeze over' quote was part of a radio interview on CWR. I agree 100% with Mutton on this stance.

However the full quote on the Council's 50% holding in ACL is as follows:

Coun Mutton said the council still had a “not for sale” policy on its 50 per cent share.

But he added, if “a fantastic offer came in” for the council’s shares, the full council could vote on a change of policy.

It appears that CCC certainly won't/can't deal with SISU (and who can blame them), yet there is nothing to stop them selling their 50% share to a more trustworthy owner in the future.

Regarding the Thatcher e-mail, this was originally a private e-mail sent to fellow Labour councillors asking for their views on whether to fly the Union Jack at half-mast next Wednesday. The 'smiley face' attempt at humour doesn't surprise me from a Labour politician. As I understand it Cllr Chater mistakenly forwarded it to ALL councillors, hence the resulting 'leak' to the CT.

It seems to me that a mixture of the PC brigade and Tory supporters have seized on this for political capital - having survived the Thatcher years I for one can take it all with a pinch of salt.

Frankly that matters not though I think it shows an ignorance of the reality of 1979. There is no question without at least two thatcher terms this country would have been bankrupt.

This however is hardly the point. Mutton is in a respected position. He has shown disrespect and put the council in disrepute. As stu observed a council worker would be held out for the slaughter if he did it.

His position is not tenable. This country needs to act with dignity regardless of viewpoint politically on such occasions how can the masses do this when even elected leaders act with such crass insensivity?

It was a pathetic and tasteless attempt at humour. However, he has apologised so that is that. We all have to learn to be careful on email, twitter, forums etc. He should know better but he seems a bit of an older class warrior who is not very diplomatic. Thatcher was not averse to throwing the odd insult and I think she would be very pleased that she is still under the skin of Old Labour

Years ago when John Mutton had just been elected onto the council, his house got a complete refit throughout.I had to inspect it as I was an insurance rep at the time.
I thought how can he afford all this and as he was not working until elected.

I'm finding myself on strange ground siding with Grenduffy on this one; but I profoundly disagree with the above. He's the leader of the council. His utterances to others, in writing or verbal, in public or in private should be considered. As stated before, such responsibility comes with the office he aspired to. If he's too ignorant or such a poor judge of circumstance he can't maintain the standards the office demands, then he has to go.

It's okay dismissing it as a gaffe. Or poor judgement. But when's the next one? Offending someone who's looking at inward investment into Coventry? The next prospective owner of the football club? Thatcher can't answer him back - but I've no doubt she'd have torn him a new arse in her pomp. But the next offended may simply walk away from this crude man and the city he 'represents'...

He apologised as he got found out.

So if sisu apologised tomorrow and paid the rent you'd be cool would you?

Given your adulation of the thatcher worshipping Dave whelan I'm amazed at your stance.

Do if mutton had sent an e mail with any subject matter and got found out then apologised that's ok is it?

As I understood it, he met Joy Seppala and she was supposed to find investors to develop the area and therefore create jobs as part of any deal. Nothing happened. Mutton is a big City fan, but he wants an investor who does something for the city. SISU hasn't come up with the goods. "get out of town" says Mutton. Understandable. Let's see what happens and if a new investor can make the council ( chosen by the Coventry electorate ) happy and get CCFC moving in the right direction. Then we're all happy and there shouldn't be a problem handing over the stadium.

He seems to be getting national coverage now. Front page on Daily Mail tomorrow is my bet;

A Labour council leader joked with 'comrades' that he wanted to fly a flag with 'a happy smiling face' emblazoned on it during Margaret Thatcher's funeral, it emerged today.
Politician John Mutton has been forced to apologise after sending incendiary emails to others in his party about whether to fly the Union Flag at half mast over Coventry city hall.
A series of leaked documents reveal the city's former Lord Mayor Dave Chater then replied: 'Would have preferred to see her hanging from a flagpole in the early 80s!'
The embarrassment has seen the Labour pair branded 'beyond contempt' and among 'the last vestiges of the loony left' for their lack of respect for the Iron Lady.
Councillor Mutton wrote: 'Colleagues, whilst I have had to smile at some of the jokes doing the rounds following the death of Thatcher, it has been brought to my attention that normally, following the death of a former Prime Minister, we receive an instruction from the queen telling us to fly the Union Flag at half-mast.
'Apparently, Birmingham have stated that they do not intend to fly the flag at half-mast on the day of the funeral.
'My own view is that I would fly a flag with a happy smiling face on but I would like to know the views of colleagues.
'Would you please let me know your views, if you have a

Yes there IS something to stop CCC selling their 50% share to a more trustworthy owner in future ... THE COUNCIL ... in the words of Mutton "if a FANTASTIC OFFER came in" for the Council's shares, the full council COULD vote on a change of policy.

SO IT SEEMS A SENSIBLE REALISTIC MARKET OFFER FROM TRUSTWORTHY NEW OWNERS WOULD BE REJECTED !!!!

Mutton should go for his disgusting tasteless comments about Margaret Thatcher. There was no apology in his statement for the comments he made ... only regret that he may have caused offence. Not good enough.

The Daily Mail will get their knickers in a twist over it, but it's all OTT, as is their coverage of every issue.
No respect for the newspaper that expressed support for Hitler throughout the 30s. They are truly despicable.
This is a storm in a teacup, frankly.

What about the BBC. His partner in crime seems less than repentant;

A Coventry Labour councillor says he stands by comments made about former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher that have upset some other councillors.

Dave Chater's remarks were made on a leaked internal email discussing whether the council house's union flag should fly at half mast.

Mr Chater said: "Would have preferred to see her hanging from a flag pole in the early 80s."

A Conservative councillor said he hoped for more respect for Baroness Thatcher.

Mr Chater was responding to an email sent from council leader John Mutton to other Labour councillors over whether to lower the flag for next Wednesday's funeral.

Mr Mutton had joked in the initial email that a flag bearing "a happy smiling face" should be flown instead.

The leader of the authority has since expressed a wish to "retract the original comment".

Personally, I think whoever leaked an internal council email to the Daily Mail, or any media outlet, is just as culpable in breaking the rules for the organisation.
If I leaked anything to the press in my job I would be in as much bother as the author.
Someone only did it to stir ... Just as unedifying as the original insult.
