Thomas played a lot of awful long balls, Kitching plays at least one terrible ball a game. Lats at least makes up for it with being able to defend.

Onyeka exists though so seemingly we have an excuse for people to make as to why our defensive record is better with him in the team.

Reading the post again we have set up differently though ?

Full backs less likely to stay high , onyeka sitting in , more compact generally ?

Its ok because its working but we have literally set up more conservative

You can just give credit where it’s due. I’ve posted our record with Lats in the side an it didn’t start in the last two games.

Ive given lati credit elsewhere , you extended the post beyond credit to joel so created debate

No I just pointed out that the criticism levelled at him is above and beyond what other players who have the same flaws get. And you demonstrated that nicely. All our CBs give the ball away every game, Lats is the only one people bang on about it.

He’s our best defender and I’ll stick by that.

I wasn’t replying to your post originally? You jumped in to defend Thomas and say our record with him in the side is down to the last two games changes.

But I dont think you can discuss the last couple of defensive performances without bringing Onyeka in to the conversation.

His contribution has been vital.

Id say the way the team have set up last 2 games is a big part of why we have got the results .. i think joel brings a calmness to the back line sure , he has his limitations hence why we probably wont play as expansive or high with him in the team

Not sure thats a bad thing if we win matches

He scares me when he has the ball as his passing can sometimes be atrocious, he is playing a very conservative game though and at the moment deserves his place in the side

We got caught out 2nd half yesterday, think it was after MVEs poor free kick
They broke down our left, JDS was caught upfield, Grimes ran across to cover and Onyeka stated Central and we snuffed out the danger..

Grimes would have been trying to cover both positions not that long ago and it was those situations which were getting us into trouble.

Yeah, I was agreeing with your post, just giving an example of a situation which would have proved problematic only a couple of weeks ago.

And I’m pointing out we’ve been getting the results with him in the side since the start of the season.

You don’t like him as a player. It’s fine, everyone has their players.

Yes and in those games we’ve not conceded more than one goal IMO because he’s a good defender. Always an excuse “we’ve got Onyeka” “he had a lot to do” “he didn’t have a lot to do” “he’s only played 7 games”. Just say you don’t rate him regardless of how he or the team plays, it’s fine. We all don’t rate some players.

My stance on joel is clear always has been , hes limited

Discussing how weve played and the way weve set up is a normal part of dicussing matches

And yet weve managed to score 5 goals in 2 games, and we didn't even try to attack in the second half against West Brom.

This is boring so last post on this as we’ve come full circle now but as I said at the start of this all out CBs are limited. Joel is the best out and out defender though and when we were handing out a goal or two a game from very basic defensive errors I’ll take a defender over someone who is a benefit going forwards sometimes.

Shouldn’t underestimate his mental resilience and strength too.

Absolutely in the cold, sees us drop £4M on another defender, fourth choice CB, coupled with an injury so behind everyone else fitness wise. Not part of that history making starting 11.

Now first choice.

Imagine the nerves that first game.

He’s also a natural leader, watch him constantly talking - including to the Ref. Not to mention he’s an absolute wind up.

Deserves his place, despite his limitations.
