He’s had two purple patches. Sunderland fans weren’t enamoured with him and didn’t he only score against six sides last year? He’s got an awful lot to prove and seemingly no inclination to prove it right now. He’s still better than BTA and Bassette mind.

On a serious note, how can we get the most out of him if he’s not started in consecutive games since September?

It was the same story last season. Until Robins clued up that to get the most out of Simms, he just needed to double down on starting him week in and week out.

His movement in the box is leagues better anything we’ve got and the only thing BTA and Bassette offer more than Simms is that they look busier because they chase lost causes.

The same applies to BTA too. It’s a waste of we’re going to not pick him as a ST and only start him upfront once in a blue moon.

I think all our strikers are crap TBH, but Simms seems more of a confidence player than the others and has better attributes and a better record so personally I’d stick with him and hope he plays himself into form.

Plenty of strikers are streaky, he might just be that. Thing is we have invested north of 3m for him and he's not been given a consistent run this season to my memory.

Said it before but he strikes me as a confidence player, he needs time to play into form. He's ours and if we want him to succeed or even chance to get our the fee back for him then chopping and changing constantly is not going to help. Bassette and BTA have been very poor. given him a run.

He’s just a number 9. Won’t do much outside of the box but inside the box is a different player.

That’s dependent on getting chances to your striker though which we’ve not done well this season. My personal view that a front 3 of Haji-Simms-EMC could paper over the cracks of our midfield woes because there’s a lot of goals and assists there.

If we’re signing a winger I’m not sure how our team looks.

The football people don't want to start him so you have to ask why ?

It's lampard and Robins and even Carr when he was interim

The question is , what is wrong with ellis simms

Not sure the role of a number 9 is to not do much outside the box , vik played the number 9 role here exceptionally well and he dragged the team up the pitch , much like a ronaldo nazario did as a 9 .

A number 9 is more than just a finisher

I think the problem with Simms is he doesn't really excel at anything

Simms needs a run in the team similar to the one Bassette has had since Robins has been sacked. If he has 8-10 games and he doesn’t score, then we’d need to go back to the drawing board.

Which would be a disaster and sends all the wrong messages out to the fanbase.

The team losing MVE, Sheaf and Wright can only be justified if we’re going to up the ante in terms of our transfer spend.

If there’s no cash and Sheaf is injured then it’s him or MvE I guess and we have one RB and four strikers/two LW and Lampard has never had him available so I could see a scenario where if he wants out he’s let go to allow Lampard to bring one or two in.

He excels at finishing chances and his goals for us show that.

Vik is a unicorn player for us and it wasn’t just him. Hamer’s passing was perfect for him and we just don’t have that in this team. Vik wouldn’t have done as well on 22/23 without Hamer in the team.

What’s worrying is the signs our best players want out rather than us wanting to sell and rebuild. Sheaf and MvE have already switched off while they wait for a move, having Wright checked out as well is seriously worrying. Clearly some of them were getting itchy feet under Robins as King said it was a reason for sacking him. The appointment of Lampard seems to have done nothing to reverse this in face value.

TBH I’d sell if he’s not committed, we’ve got EMC and can bring in a proper number 9 it’s probably worth it. You aren’t going to raise rebuilding money selling Lats and Collins.

Well sure but vik could create his own goals too , I don't think ellis is a particularly great finisher either tbh.

Again I'm not arguing I'm asking why managers continue to not play ellis simms ?

When he’s confident he does, at the moment he’s as bad as any of them for fluffing his lines. Agree in form he’s the second best finisher in the squad after Wright.

People made this same argument about Lati/Binks starting ahead of Kitching… Then Lampard was impressed with him and he will probably start the next league game.

You could’ve applied that logic to Collins over Dovin and eventually, we look at lot better with Dovin in goal.

As for Norwich, playing Allen, BTA and Bassette showed that the plan was to just press and cover as much distance as possible to close passing lanes and so on. In a sense, it probably made sense to drop Simms.

It’s my view that the penny will drop for Lampard and eventually we’ll start Simms again and he’ll be rewarded for that.

He started 8/12 under Robins, including 6 of the first 7.

He's shown in patches what he can do but needs to do more. He's clearly a complex character that needs to be properly coached.

Seems a quiet lad, almost a bit nervous in interviews, he's the exact opposite of Vik for me. He can do it we've all seen him dominate defenders, win balls, hold up the ball and play in others. Its got to be confidence and belief for him, every time he's had a game he has looked up for it and shown glimpses of actually using his physicality he's been dropped the next match, or had a knock.

We have to give him a run surely. BTA has missed 2 sitters in a week and Norm is 19 and very raw. We need to back our 3m striker especially when the alternatives aren't firing either

Robins eventually played him consistently last season and he got his rewards for doing so. Simms finished the season our joint top scorer. His finishing is very good, second only to Wright at this moment in time I'd say. He's scored goals against Premier league teams such as Chelsea, Wolves, Man Utd and Everton in pre season. He is more than capable.

We signed him knowing exactly what type of number 9 he was, it wasn't for his ability to run around pressing as a loan striker.

The problem this season does not start with Ellis Simms, it comes from behind, the enormous lack of creativity from the beginning of the season, up until recently. He had struck up a good partnership with Wright, but due to Wrights pre season injury, they couldn't carry that on early on this year. Playing him as a loan striker feeding off scraps will have done his confidence no good at all. The games in which he did score in, he was then dropped the next game, because Robins was under pressure and trying all sorts to turn things around.

Lampard praised his efforts the other day and said himself that he knows what he is capable of when he gets going.
He changed formation against Norwich so Simms was probably unlucky to be dropped, which again will have done the confidence no good after a good performance against Cardiff.
He should've been managed better. Hopefully Lampard starts to do that.

He's frustrating to those who only want to see the bad in him. When you take him for exactly what he is, what type of player, and watch him off the ball, you may change your mind.
His touch is not always brilliant but he has other good attributes and he's just turned 24 years old, he's years from his peak and needs coaching and time.
He's not afforded that here, because everyone expects us to replace Gyokeres with a finished article.
Wright was our big money signing, the rest need to be managed correctly and coached properly.
He's proved he can hold his own against premier league opposition.

He makes intelligent runs, and countless times I've counted he's not been fed in, really simple passes. Instead we turn around and go backwards or sideways. It's really infuriating.

What's really frustrating is what it must feel like to be one of our strikers at the moment.

People have very short memories, Gyokeres was not spoken fondly of when he arrived here, nor for the first season particularly. He left a better player and the fans got behind him. That can make a massive difference to a player.

I also don't think we have somebody who can play that pass in behind / the channels so he can be in one on one with the defender to get it.

Anyone saying Simms needs a run in the side, he's had lots of chances. Some as sub granted, and whilst difficult to get into a game, he is playing fresh against tired defenders. He's featured in 22 games this season and scored 2. That would be ok if he was a Cyrille type player who did other things well creating space for those around him, but he offers none of that either.

I'd love him to prove me wrong, but if we can get anything like our money back on him now, I'd take it.

To answer the question for Evo I think the pressure to play Bassette probably comes via the owner.
