What I particularly don't understand is last season general consensus was he'd done quite well. This season, despite doing just as well, he's the devil incarnate!Allen's role isn't to be part of a possession based way of playing, he's there to help the quick transition from defence to attack (and he can be pretty good at that).
I'm not sure why he's the fall guy - I highly doubt he's one of the highly paid players yet has contributed sufficiently this season despite that.
