...and to be fair he's improved as a player in every season.

I don't know how much truth there is in the idea that as he was a relatively late starter to full-time / professional football (2010 I assume when he signed for Crawley at 23) means that his football age or mileage is probably a bit lower than your average 36 year old. He's never been quick anyway so even if he's lost a bit of speed it's offset by the speed in the head gained by experience.

I remember reading an interview with Paul Power who suggested similar when he was in Everton's title winning season.

Mind you, he retired the following season at the age of 34!

Fadz was also quite instrumental in our league 1 season

Allen is vital to the way we play, and easily deserves his place in the team. We’d all like a better player in there instead, but we don’t have one at the club…

Hamer’s passing in the first half against Hudds was dreadful, and that was actually mostly short simple passes, same for Sheaf, yet fans pick up on Allen’s passing, even though the stats show it was the best of the lot. Weird.

I though footballers were supposed to be able to play a bit.

Are you serious?
The current EPL leaders wont entertain taking on a player unless they're a good athlete.
Not sure how some people can't quite grasp the importance of running to the game!

Seems to be you are either Team Allen or Team Palmer atm. I don't have a massive problem with either whilst also hoping we can improve to a point that they are considered to be more squad players.

Both are fine for a mid table championship side.
If we really want to have a go at the play offs we'll need an upgrade but upgrading them alone won't be enough.

I like Fadz and he has done well this season but at 37 in a couple of weeks there is no way he would walk into a top 6 teams starting line up, I don't believe Bidwell would either.

And yet ironically, had he not got injured, he could be at a top 6 club right now.

You've just said it yourself, a good player AND an athletes, Allen is not a good player.

Yes he runs around a lot and covers a lot of ground, but so does a blind dog running after a tennis ball.

The three centre backs would be two Jamie Allen's stacked on top of each other, to make it fair.

I've been critical at times, and he's clearly limited, some strengths but not enough to be a "stand out"..
He's done ok but nothing more.

Mainly the bit when it's suggested that he isn't a waste of space.

I've been consistent in that, throughout his time here, he was in the bomb squad at one time, and imo should of stayed there.
He's the only consistent choice that MR picks that absolutely baffles me.

Its not the be all and end all though! You have to be able to actually do something with a football as well.

Not even the first Jamie allen to come up when googled, get rid

Ps agree with the crux of NWs post. Like a couple of others he’s the one that fans pick on when there’s plenty of others that perform worse….also see Bidwell, Dabo, Eccles etc. They’ll see the one or two bad things but miss the good. You need a mix of players in a team and certain ones will be integral to the system even if they aren’t necessarily stand out individuals. Allen’s been one of those this season even though a couple of his recent performances haven’t been quite up to his level pre World Cup break…same as most !

Impacting the game. Not fluffing shots and breaking down attacks. Winning the ball, creating goals, beating men, anything that involves touching the football that the other players all do.

He’s a nothing midfielder, the sort that would poodle about in a Phil Neale or Amy Thorn team doing not much but making safe passes. He’s not an AM by any stretch of the imagination.

Palmer is on the right. Actually tries to make things happen. Allen’s forward passing percentage is by far the worse of all our midfielders.

Also Allen has played 91% of all minutes, Palmer 54%. We’re only just starting to see the best of Palmer now he’s having a run of games.

I think what I'm getting at is he offers something to the team , with the football at his feet . The stats show he does things better than others ..is he amazing ? No

But to suggest he's a nothing midfielder is a pretty shit take

You can't build a team full of flair , normally it doesn't work

What does he do? I don’t want my AMs to have high pass completion, I want them trying to split defences. Forwards generally have some of the lowest in the side because of that. He doesn’t win the ball, even by your stats he’s 0.5 recoveries ahead of Palmer who is apparently lazy and never presses.

Would he make it into your first XI if we rebuild in the summer?
