....its the sheer lack of tactics, organization or a game plan. For example after one game it was clear to me that Kevin Kilbane isn't any good and should only be used as a reserve left back for Hussey, he is too slow and as result gets caught out defensively and offers nothing going forward. Yet after 6 league games both he remains in the team, how on earth can they not see what is obvious to everyone

It was clear last season that our squad severely lacked pace and as a result Thorn brought in Nimely (one of his better decisions) and this coincided with our best run of form. This season the pace problem has again become a big problem yet neither Thorn or Shaw have attempted to sign pacy players (one of thorns many bad decisions). I understand that shaw is caretaker but he did oversee the loan of McGoldrick.

Another example of this lack of effective management, is shown when comparing us to Sheffield united. Last season they faced a similar problem to us in the fact they are like us a 'big' club, needing to bounce back at the first attempt. Danny Wilson set his team up every game in a 4-4-2 formation and the plan was to get balls wide to Stephen Quinn and Lee Williamson and for them to put balls in the box for ched Evans. This was there game plan and they only were a kick away from promotion. Can anyone tell me what our tactics are because in my opinion both Thorn and Shaw have none.

We can go on about tactics as much as we like but you say its not the players and then say Kilbane is crap and we lack pace. In other words we need different players. I believe it is the players as they are the ones that control the effort they put in, they are the ones letting in poor goals every game and missing good chances to score.

This club is in a mess, from the top to the bottom. The problems are all connected to each other. We've got no leader, or rather nobody who stands out on the touchline as a leader. But the players cannot be absolved of all blame. They are, after all, professional. The senior heads, at least, should know what is expected of them. They are the ones who need to stand up and be counted while we're in this situation. They need to lead on the pitch. But do they? It seems it's easier to hide behind the same excuses after every game. I'm fed up of hearing the quote "we gifted them...".

Do we have a squad good enough? Maybe the squad has some good players. But in this sport you can have all the good players you want. If they don't make a good team, then you're going to struggle. It seems we have players who should, in theory, be able to cope at this level. But they're not working as a team, and it shows. It's not just down to tactics. They have to demonstrate more effort. More action, less excuses.

It's players and tactics, but most of all it's the sheer culture of failure and de-motivation that has engulfed the club.

Kilbane has some assets, we're just not getting anywhere near the best out of him, nor are we most of our players. Kilbane showed he has ability against Brum-and I despaired when he took up a position for a set piece against Stevenage, totally unmarked on the far-post, clear header on goal if we found him-and Hussey hit the first man, crossing to the near post :facepalm:

Yes but if adopted that policy for the whole squad we would have to start drafting players out of the crowd as we'd have no one left.

Footballers at every level of the game understand how to pass the ball ,how to move into space , how to overlap etc,etc .Tactics is an over -used excuse in the modern game

I agree with a lot of what you have said though.

In terms of technical ability though, that game did perfectly highlight his qualities. He shouldn't be playing every game and he needs to be in a different role to that we've mostly used him in, but he has more technique and nous than most of our players. Whereas with Baker, it was more of a classic "running on adrenaline" lower-league player's 1 in 30 decent performance in a big cup game.

I'd equally say that the Cody finish shows what he's capable of-as did the great movement before it. There is ability, it's just not being utilised properly. Shaw could get them up for that game, anyone could have done (maybe not Coleman...). What we need is a manager capable of getting the players performing to their ability consistently, something we haven't had in many a year.

But such managers exist-most of them come from the lower leagues. Westley at Stevenage was one. Johnson at Yeovil. Moore at Tranmere. You can't tell me that John Still and Paul Tisdale don't get all that they can out of rubbish players: Ince got ten times the performance out of rubbish players at Macclesfield. Our players are playing rubbish, but capable of so much more than they are delivering. THe big question is-are we going to hire a manager capable of getting the most out of them? Success elsewhere guarantees nothing-managers have moves that don't work out as often as players do!


That said-our players are a bit rubbish. The defence apart from Clarke has been abysmal to a man this season. But with good organisation, motivation, man-management, and a coherent tactical game-plan, even they could improve!
