We have promised so much and delivered so little , says Westwood
Coventry City' goalkeeper Kieren Westwood has said it is now time for the team to deliver a good season for the long suffering City fans.
Westwood is in what could be his last year at Coventry and the previous two seasons were disappointing for the team and the fans, but this season the side is finally giving hope, sitting in the play off zone and only three points adrift of an automatic promotion place.
“We have promised so much and delivered so little in the past but fingers crossed things will be different this year,” said the Irish international goalkeeper, who has kept four successive clean sheets.
“We are all hoping and we think we have got a great chance. We are a strong unit now and very hard to break down and maybe we would have lost our last couple of games this time last year."
“We don’t give teams many chances and when we do I have managed to keep them out recently.”
Coventry have had a bit of luck in keeping four clean sheets with a saved penalty against Middlesbrough and some woeful finishing from the Reading strikers, but that does not matter much to Westwood.
He said, “The Middlesbrough game was horrible, I am not going to lie, but as much as they passed the ball they hit the bar and missed their penalty so I’ll take that and 1-0 every day of the week."
“We looked at the chances they made and asked questions, but Boro are a good side with a good manager as well and they don’t deserve to be where they are at the moment.”
Coventry have a tough festive season to look forward to with games against the current top two teams, QPR and Cardiff, in the Championship in the space of just five days.
Westwood is well aware that a good result in these two fixtures could have a significant outcome of their whole season. Losing both games could derail their promotion hopes, but positive results in both games could see Coventry City end the festive program in the top two
“Christmas can be a vital time and we want to stick in there and we can only do that by winning and hopefully we can keep grinding these wins out, and fingers crossed it goes well for us,” said Westwood.
“Being in the top six and staying in there is the aim of everyone in the Championship, so I think it is a case of quietly going about our business and keep doing what we are doing, and if we are in there come the end of the season then great, but nothing is won now so we have got to keep at it and continue doing what we are doing.”
