The votes are counted, and it’s official, the people of Coventry have chosen the Britannia Hotel as the building they’d most like to see have an encounter with a wrecking ball.
Last month we ran a poll asking our readers to choose what they thought to be the ugliest building in the city, and it was a pretty crowded field, littered with an array of eye-popping carbuncles. The clear winner (or loser) was the Britannia Hotel on Fairfax St, securing 1351 votes, more than 37% of the votes cast.
The Britannia Hotel (formerly the ‘De Vere’) was built in 1973 and is currently undergoing a long overdue makeover as its grubby concrete exterior gets a splash of paint. No matter how often we trot out that proverb about not being able to polish a turd, it doesn’t stop some people having a go it seems.
