I'm sorry but saying 1 and 2 are unlikely is a cop out...give reasons for your answers rather than just flat out saying they don't happen because i believe they do.

Scouts will report back to their club manager. They will have a list of players which they will have put into catagories. These could be:

* For the future (keep an eye on)
* Needs more experience but worth a look
* Good enough to get in now

They will have looked at these players several times, will know them inside out and will give their advice to the manager. Saying they wont suggest that they player needs more experience doesn't happen is stupid because any scout worth his salt will be able to tell whether a player has had enough experience or not. Why do you think Fergy loaned out Brown and Norwood before him. He wanted them to get experience so they could come back and play for his team.

For the future players will be followed over the course of a year or two to see how they shape up. The scout will then return to the manager and say yay or nay dependant on what they've seen in this time period.

Good enough to get in now is self explanatory...

Needs more experience but worth a look: Theres nothing stopping the manager from buying them but they'd end up being loaned out if he didn't deem them ready for the first team. The other option is to go with the same method as for the future...let them develope at another club (also not having to spend money on that development because it isn't your player), get more time on the pitch and more experience under their belt, then come back later to see if they are ready for a big money move...

Now tell me why you don't think these are valid...an argument is only good when both sides have an opinion and can explain why they hold that opinion

I really can't be arsed to argue - other than Barton we have not paid a fee for anyone - that's an ideal opportunity to snap up a player, get them on the books and then loan them out for experience. We've probably paid no more than £200k for Barton, small fry for PL and most championship clubs, again snap them up and get them out on loan. I would be surprised if Nick Powell plays for united's first team this season, or that Bigi will feature much for Newcastle but they snappd them up, get a good look at them, identify their trains/coaching needs do some work with them and I wouldn't be surprised if both players go out to the championship on loan this season. If they are talented clubs snap them up because they don't want to risk leaving and losing out to a rival. In fact you almost argued that with your Norwood and Brown examples - getting them signed up so their yours then send them out on loan to get some experience.

I don't think you have read any of my posts properly, because in terms of season's predictions I agree around 10th and pushing. They will be good league one players, however they are not 'good' championship players and therefore wouldn't have particularly improved the squad last season, that is my point not that they are crap.

I just think that your reasonings behind some of the things, while having there good points, also have some weak points too.

You can't say that Barton or Ball aren't of Championship quality because (A) you haven't seen them play in a propper competative match and (B) as i said previously Ball has played in the Championship and had a very good record. The fact that Thorn twisted Derby's hand behind their back (using Keogh's sale) in order to get Ball shows that Derby weren't that chuffed about letter Ball go. They even said that they want him back and that there probably wont be a chance of us buying him at the end of the season. As for Barton, the fact that Liverpool nearly paid £5 million for him shows you that someone up there rated him very highly and if it wasn't for his injury, he'd probably be at Liverpool now. Whether he'd had been in the 1st team is anyones guess...

I'm not disputing that clubs don't snap players up straight away because they do, but if they're not willing to put their money into a player that may be unknown quantity (which is what all players are really in the beginning) then they'll leave that player alone until as such time as they feel he is ready to be bought. Its a risk any club has to take and some clubs have had brilliant results from it while others have had dire results. Buy them now and hope they turn out well or leave them another year to get more experience and hope they don't get snapped up by other clubs.

As for Bigi, its clear the lad has talent. It's clear he could be a very good player in a few years time and its clear he'll get some games in Newcastles 1st team as he's already played several high level european teams with Newcastle since joining them. Yeh your right, he wont play all their games but he'll play a few and be a substitute in a few too.

As for the other players that we've bought, they're are teams in League 1 that would die for the players we've got. Yeh we don't know whether they'll be good in this league but at the same time we couldn't afford players that we know are good because they're either out of our price range or don't want to come here. All players deserve a chance to prove they're worth the time and effort spent on them. Bigi showed that he was. Several players over the years have proved it too.

We can't truely say whether they'd have been better for our team or not last year because we don't know their quality just yet but at the same time we can say with some certainty that our team was poor last year and i think even two or three of these players would have given us a lift. Kilbane looks better than Clingan and his record both at club level and Internationaly is better than Clingans in my opinion. We needed a presence up front last year that we didn't have, Ball could have been that presence. It might not have got us goals but at least it might have made us a little more dangerous. Our midfield lacked a backbone and players like Jennings and Barton could (mention i said could, not would) have given us that backbone if we'd had them.

As for Brown and Norwood, i believe both came up through Man U's youth team and therefore, getting them in to loan them out doesn't count. They were already on Man U's books from when they were young and even when you loan someone out, you still pay for them to some degree (I may be wrong...someone needs to clarify this for me).

So to sum it up (as your apparantly bored of arguing with me, when it fact i believe we were debating which is clearly different lol), you believe these players aren't good enough for the championship based on the fact that no championship clubs came in for them. So let me ask you...do you know that for a fact?? Did you consult your crystal ball

You claim that because these phantom championship clubs didn't come in for these players, they therefore aren't good enough when it could simply be that they are in fact good players that decided to come to Coventry because they felt it was a good thing for their career. We are notorious for making or breaking players careers...now thats a fact lol

Also to go back, you say that comparing Barton to Norwood isn't possible. Now i can actually see your point to some degree but if it wasn't for Cov, Norwood might still be at Man U instead of forging his career in the Championship. His loan to us gave him the stepping stone he needed to get regular first team appearances and it also gave him the confidence to ask for a transfer which is why he's now playing Championship football. It's clear that Barton had some talent and that his injury was what got in the way, who's to say he has lost it...only time will tell.

I also think that Thorn isn't jsut getting players in to fill positions and make a large squad...he's also getting players in who he feels, with a good bit of attention will become players of the future. Fleck, Barton, Jennings...they all fit into this catagories don't you think? Get them playing good and then sell them on would be how SISU see it but thats beside the point...I ignore SISU for the most part.

Lastly, i did read your posts and i know that overall your assessment of them isn't an insult...i just think that its a narrow way of thinking when you could look at it in a wider case and see that they're probably loads more factors behind why they are with us and not at a championship club. But that i think only time will tell and im glad that we had this chance to debate this issue...i like a good debate

Free up rod and Jeffers wages.

i like jeffers, he's got a year left on his contract. He looked good when played out wide, has some pace and flair and can play up front too!

and rather than spending on a new pacey winger, how about looking into our own academy for wingers:
Will Roberts
Shaun jeffers (already scored a couple of goals out wide pre sseason, looks quick, skillful, sharp)
Lewis Garner (looks quality but very young, quick and agile, came from manchester united academy)

And if thomas is out we already have barton, kilbane, billy daniels and possibly jennings (if he signs) to play defensive mid

You say to be resolved ASAP, but I'd say they are more the final checklist or pieces of the puzzle. Considering what the club has gone through and the complete squad restructure, compared to where we COULD have been and at times thought we might, we have done well and I have to say fair play to them for trying to fix this.

A few months ago we were under an embargo expecting our youth team to fill in the gaps of the expected departures of our key players.

I do agree with the points, they do need doing, but just not in the almost panicked tone I sense from some posters. Yes the season is nearly here, but as long as they are done by the time the transfer window closes then great.

where exactly is the money coming from to fund these players does anyone know?

Unfortunately we're never going to get everything right...Thorn can only do so much and i think he's done a great job so far, regardless of what people think.

I think Wood will stay (for the mean time...possible sell him in the Winter Transfer Window)

Hussey is someone that i think will stay...he's got a slightly longer contract that Wood so there isn't as much haste in getting rid of him...which i don't think they should.

People also seem to be having a go at Kilbanes fitness. I think Kilbane will be fine. He can play in midfield and at Left back.

The Edge is getting his feet in this league but give him a chance and im pretty sure he'll do just fine in either CB or LB...


I just think its pointless speculating on what the club needs. We just have to wait and see what Thorn has up his sleave.

He'll have gone through the same thinking process as the fans but the difference is he'll know exactly what he needs to get and until we see the signings, we wont know what it is he feels the club needs.

I am sorry for getting angry though...just starting to get on my tits a little.

I wanna get to the beginning of the season without seeing another thread titled "What we need?/Thorn is a fat git/Why is our manager fat/We're not gonna win the league/our signings are crap" etc etc.


Let the football do the talking and us fans do the supporting...if it goes wrong then we can moan like the true negative Coventrians that we are...but if i goes right...then we can celebrate and look forward to an amazing season and a possible jump straight back into the Championship!

Couldn't agree more with all this...well said! Personally I can't wait to get the season started and get on with supporting our club. I live in London and I can tell you that being in div 1 isn't going to stop me getting to as many matches as possible...I'm excited at the possibilities!

he's been playing as a defensive midfielder, don't know of him every being a striker personally

Hang on a minute. Think about Thorns #1 formation: Diamond with 1 up top with 1 behind. We have Mcsheffrey, Ball, McDonald and Elliott AND Fleck who can play either up top or just off. Do you really think we need another striker? League 1 is competitive but the quality is poor. Remember some players who may have looked out of their depth last season may all of a sudden shine in this league.

Let's get this Peter Lad in though as he looks decent and would give us another option. Plus I have a feeling O'Donovan will leave if he doesn't make an impact this season. I could see him being sold in the jan transfer window if he doesn't do good things.
