I think (and it’s nuanced I know) he supported that Israel had the right to make that decision
I may be wrong
This is where powerful countries could be doing something by mirroring Russia and China. I’m sure they are behind the scenes

Israel's foreign minister, Eli Cohen, has shared this picture of a billboard by a road in Israel on X, formerly Twitter.
Alongside it he again wrote the words "thank you Mr President".
It comes as the US is boosting military aid to Israel, with the first plane carrying US arms arriving in southern Israel yesterday evening.

The Israeli army said "advanced ammunition” had arrived at the Nevatim Airbase, and it was "meant to enable significant strikes and preparation for additional scenarios".

Yesterday US President Joe Biden condemned Hamas' unprecedented assault on Israel as “sheer evil”.
The US is also moving an aircraft carrier and a fighter aircraft to the eastern Mediterranean.

this is not going to help matters either, que Iran stepping up there efforts.

A barrister supports the right to break international law that will lead to the deaths of who knows how many children?

He's an imbecile.
He could have supported their right to knock fuck out of Hamas without supporting that.

Fair I’d have to listen again
I would have said they have the right to make that call but I disagree with them doing so and I think there’s a question of international law but thankfully I won’t ever be held to account

There is energy but it’s a tiny percentage of what they need.

You can listen all you want, but understand what you’re listening to. Read the room, anything right now other than unequivocal support for Israel is like shouting “I love pedo gangs” at an EDL rally.

He can go off on an Owen Jones style rant (who by the way I actually agree with for once, but look how it was received, even if it was angry Owen), but right now he wants to win an election and “being on the side of terrorists” is probably the worst way to do it.

You don't have to be on the side of the terrorists to express reasonable concern about how Israel reacts, specifically in regard to the siege and cutting water and power.

The EU have done it, representatives of the UN have done it. All quite reasonably stated, so it's quite possible to support Israel against Hamas without it needing to be unequivocal

Starmer could have done it too, but either he believes Israel's actions are acceptable here, or he's too scared to say what he does believe.

I get that he wants to be elected, but either you take what he says here at face value, in which case I think he's supporting something which I consider immoral, or you accept that there's nothing that he won't say to get elected, in which case we don't really know what he does stand for. Neither seems like a good trait for a future leader to me.

Israel's siege of Gaza is illegal, EU says

"Cutting water, cutting electricity, cutting food to a mass of civilian people is against international law," said EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell in Muscat.

He's just a really poor interviewee, he seems to get caught between natural instinct and the "how to talk like a Westminster politician" training he has had. All he had to say is that Israel has its right to defend itself but has no right to break international law, like any other other country signed up to the Geneva Convention

On a connected note Trump apparently blamed Biden yesterday for the Hamas incursions and attacks.

Emergency Israeli government agreed

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and opposition leader Benny Gantz have agreed to form an emergency government.
A "war cabinet" will be set up - with Netanyahu, Gantz and the country's defence minister.
It means that during the war period, "no bills or government decisions will be promoted that do not concern the conduct of the war" and all senior appointments will be automatically extended during the war period.

Simplistically Iran is Shia, Egypt is Sunni and as hopefully most know the only thing they like short of hating Jews is hating each other. Hamas is an Iran proxy so there is no love lost there.

About half an hour ago Radio 5 Live had a Lawyer on from the International Law Center in Amsterdam who is supposed to be some sort of expert. You could feel the frustration as the answers seemed both contradictory and depends and when the full facts become available etc.

The specific question of Egypt closing its border was asked and the Lawyer said something on the lines of well that was illegal but so is forced displacement, at that point the interviewer had had enough.

The same time yesterday they had a BBC Journalist on who had been to Gaza recently and mentioned there are tunnels under the Border big enough to drive a Mercedes through. His words. I assume Hamas are not being supplied via Israel, that Israel checks ships coming in so that leaves just one option left.

To suggest when there is a war on you have to supply your enemy is beyond crazy, now if you occupy an area then you do have some responsibility as far as PoWs, Civilians under your control.

I said the exact same thing when Grendel was trotting out crude generalisations about all Muslims being “generally the most racist”.

This is not about giving any side a free pass, it’s about not slurring and dehumanising millions of people based on the actions of some of the worst members of their community.

The thing is tho, that the average Israeli is a zionist. The majority of Muslims are not terrorists or racists however Israelis are taught from a young age that their country is their holy right.

Anyone else got any opinion polls they want to trot out? I know that none of us on here appear to have any actual first-hand knowledge of what Israeli Jews or Palestinians really believe, but I’m confident that three or four more links to surveys should do the trick to finally fix this.

For me, if you support the illegal and inhumane occupation of Palestine because you think it’s your “holy right” then yes you are a major fucking twat. People condemn Islam because they say the Quran teaches Jihadi terrorism but where’s the same treatment for zionism when it’s the Torah telling them it’s THEIR land given to them by GOD?
