If only it were possible to be appalled by Hamas atrocities against Israeli civilians and by Israeli atrocities against Palestinian civilians.

Oh wait, it is!

Whatever the justification or retribution or continuing reprisals on both sides in the Middle East, I don’t want to see people raising flags from either Israel or Palestine in the UK. It should be stamped on and made a crime of incitement.

God help us, I honestly didn’t realise they had started flying Israeli flags in London.
When we went to London for the play off final and stayed on for a couple of days we were amazed at how many buildings in central London were flying Ukrainian flags.

It's amazing how poor he is at thinking on his feet

Israel has the right to cut off energy and water for the population of Gaza. Being generous he mentions international law but it's nowhere near unequivocal enough.

You say indiscriminately, but can't back up your claims I bet most of these civilian deaths have been beside something, weapons, high ranking military air defences ect. The only random civilian deaths I've heard of the last 5 years have been isreals civilians dying to mortars and missiles those that get through iron dome.

As for children should I send you a picture of a decapitated 11 month Old child?

Is that innocent enough for you?

There are almost a million children in the Gaza strip. They're innocent too, unless simply being born Palestinian is a crime.

Many of those children will die in the next few days directly because of Israel's actions. There won't be as many photos, but the deaths will be horrific nonetheless. Crushed, burned, suffocated, shot, or dying slowly and painfully through infection or blood loss because of the lack of medical supplies, you take your pick.

What Hamas did was unbelievably evil, and rightly condemned. But you can't say it's wrong to kill Israeli children and ok to kill Palestinian children unless you're some kind of deranged lunatic, imho.

Mains electricity has gone out in Gaza after its sole power station ran out of fuel.
It means people in Gaza will rely on generators for electricity - if they have the fuel to run them.

The historical use of cluster munitions by Israel in Gaza has killed many children and mostly after the ceasefire. The basic scenario is a ceasefire is called kids leave home to play out, inevitably they play on bomb sites, disturb unexploded bomblets from cluster bombs and boom. Unexploded munitions such as cluster bomblets don’t adhere to ceasefires.

I'm not sure if he really believes it, or if he's just saying it because he's terrified of how the right wing press will play it if he dares to criticise Israel.

This is the problem with having a leader who is so scared of the Daily Mail that he'll say anything to try to keep them onside.

TBF the only measurable impact what he says will have is how it plays in the press. It’s not like he’s part of the peace process or has Netanyahu’s ear.

He's the leader of the Labour party and probably our next Prime Minister.

I think what he says on this issue is pretty important. It gives a fair indication of how his government will behave.

If you're interested in politics, on who to vote for, and on where the UK will stand on the world stage on these issues, then like it or not, what he says matters.

It really doesn’t. Either Israel nor Hamas will be giving two shits what the UK thinks. His government will be pro Israel, Corbyn saw to that. But off the cuff remarks in an interview make no difference other than how people locally see him. And he’s already made the calculation that people like you already don’t like him but will either not vote or vote for a protest party so can be ignored.

Hmm. I think discussing what our politicians are saying about the situation is fair enough, and politely, I don't think it's down to you to decide to shut down the debate.

If you don't want to take part, fair enough - other threads are available.

No one here gives a rats about what he actually thinks or they'd take into account everything he has said and not 1 comment when cornered on it

A yes it's a bin fire of a thread that will now be loads of pages of people talking about Keir Starmer and not the actual conflict

Right.... what Starmer says on this isn't important.

So, is it important what he says on anything else or not, because I'm not quite clear now whether we should listen to him or not?

Perhaps you and David could separate out his "important" statements that we should listen to, from the ones like this that I assume you would think better that we didn't hear.

If you don't care then why are you responding? Why was it posted in the first place? Of course people care what he thinks, and given it relates to the conflict it seems fair game for the thread.

Feel free to ignore it if choose, but it's not your or my place to be telling people they can't discuss stuff.

You can listen all you want, but understand what you’re listening to. Read the room, anything right now other than unequivocal support for Israel is like shouting “I love pedo gangs” at an EDL rally.

He can go off on an Owen Jones style rant (who by the way I actually agree with for once, but look how it was received, even if it was angry Owen), but right now he wants to win an election and “being on the side of terrorists” is probably the worst way to do it.

Well as has been already said he talks about it in his conference speech but if you want to take an off the cuff remark when corner as the be all and end all crack on. It's really not going to have any bearing on the next GE which he will win quite comfortably.

So it isn't really important to talk about what Keir Starmer said, it's more important to talk about what is happening in the conflict.
