But I still think he can be a bit of a handbrake slowing the play down and still doesn’t pass forward often enough, and who would pass it back to those centre backs

Those centre backs being the best ball playing centre backs we've had in fucking ages?

I must admit I knew he was talented but never thought he was this good. Fair play to him hope he stays grounded and goes as far as he can go

You beat me too it. Always came/comes across as having a very high opinion of himself, but fair play to him, always putting himself forward to be out and about with the community commitments for his club and in Coventry too.

In all seriousness, I am baffled as to how people couldn't see that he's a special special player. His biggest problem is, he doesn't play for a big club yet. If he played for a traditional big club he would have already played for England... Case in point, Mason Mount, has had a year in the Championship, then 5 or 6 appearances for Chelsea and was selected and played. Madison, has had league 1 time, performed in the championship, and has so far performed in the Premier League, get him in the middle of the park for England and watch how much better we are at retaining the ball and creating chances, the last couple of England games saw Kane having to drop deeper and deeper to get the ball and start attacks.

Yes. How many games have you been to this season? Are you going to tell me Willis, Clarke, Turnbull, Webster, Martin etc are better on the ball. He's made some fuck ups but is generally decent on the ball.

I’ve posted before that there’s a consicious effort from the FA to get as many players who have come through the England youth teams into the seniors. David Ornstein actually reported this a few days ago

He will, however, have a battle to break into the team as it becomes increasingly clear Southgate and the FA are committed to rewarding players who come through the national system.

Eyebrows were raised when 20-year-old Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount was preferred to Maddison as a second-half substitute in the home qualifiers against Bulgaria and Kosovo. But internally the decisions came as no surprise, considering Mount represented England at virtually every youth level and Maddison has only nine caps for the under-21 side.

Those with limited experience of the system are in no way excluded, as the likes of Jamie Vardy and Tyrone Mings have shown, but there is a concerted effort to respect the system as a first port of call. That stems from a greater familiarity and mutual understanding between players and staff and a desire to provide emerging talent with a credible pathway to the senior team.

This is why the Watford midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah, 24, will always be on England’s radar and a player such as Chelsea defender Marc Guehi, 19, was called up to the under-21s prior to making a first-team appearance for the Blues. They both represented their country at multiple youth levels and experienced a pathway that is now being described as a “massive, central consideration”.

Cant really argue against what they are doing. Seems like a good model to follow. And as mentioned there will be outliers and I’m sure Maddison will get his chance. Hopefully he gets enough of a chance to show what he can do though.

On another note I think CCFC are the joint second best providers of players in the England squad atm. Chelsea lead the way with 4.

Cov - 2 (Wilson, Maddison)
Sunderland - 2 (Pickford, Henderson)
Leeds - 2 (Delph, Rose)
Man United - 2 (Heaton, Rashford)
Spurs - 2 (Kane, Winks)

Pretty much all of the home games, as a stopper type defender he is ok but on the ball he is a disaster it’s not his way of playing. I would say on the ball he is equally bad as all of those you have named, but I would say Turnbull and Martin were the worst

I think I said once Ben Stevenson would turn out to be the better player.

Maybe I was bitter about Maddison leaving, either way wrong by a huge margin

Shouldn't they choose the team on merit, on who is the best player in a particular position at the time of selection, rather than who has played at lower age groups?

Depends what they are going for. Purely a known system or individual players trying to fit into a system. That’s where the outliers come in. Some players will be too good to leave out.

It’s basically following the France and Spain model from 15/20 years ago isn’t it? Did alright for them.

To use different criteria for picking players seems unfair and wrong. Mount is a more favoured player than Maddison because he came through the England set up.
You would also wonder why someone of Maddison ability didn't represent England at younger age levels. Because he came through an unfashionable club's academy?

Not disputing that it’s unfair, not saying the selection of the England youth teams is right.

but that’s nothing to do with my response to your last post

I first saw Maddison play in a pre season friendly v Watford when he came on as a sub.

I'd never really heard of him and I think he was maybe 17 at the time. When I saw him in the warmup I genuinely thought he was a ballboy/mascot, he was absolutely tiny and looked like a boy, not a footballer.

But then he came on for 20/30 mins and you could just instantly see that he had something. The touches and the flicks and movement. It was so obvious that he had incredible talent.

I said to my mate that based on those few minutes I am certain he will play in the Premier League one day and maybe play for England.

Without doubt. He’d gained a bit of momentum towards to back end of his first season (scored on the last day I think?) but his performance against Wigan on the first day of the next season was sublime. Oddly, some people seem to look back more fondly on Joe Cole than Maddison

Yeah but Maddison is given special treatment and loved purely because he is a homegrown player.

I was the same with the West Ham Youth Cup team. Joe Cole clearly had some special ability but even after 20 mins I felt his midfield partner was going to have a hell of a career just doing things unspectacularly, running midfield and letting Joe do his fancy stuff. That lad was Michael Carrick.

Having said that I didn't think Wilson would play PL or for England from his first few outings and while I thought Henderson was a decent player I'd never had had him as Liverpool and England captain.
