Does anyone else feel like Lamps and Southgate play a very similar style? Very slow and progressive, riding our luck at times, not the sexiest of football but the results speak for themselves. I know Southgate relied a lot on statistics, making decisions that to the fans looked bizarre but gave the highest % of a win. Feels like Lamps has us questioning but after 90 mins we’re all singing super Frank …A long way to go for the playoffs but could we just do it?

No I think we've played some good stuff in many of our recent matches , Leeds are a great team so thats easy to see why we lost and yesterday we really struggled but most teams will have matches where your backs are against the wall for various reasons .. you have to hope you take your chances when you get them

I think Lampard has had to be pragmatic.
Lost Wright before he was in the door.
Sheaf and EMC followed.
Came in just before the busiest period of the season so was limited with regard to time on the training pitch.

I think we'll see a massive change in approach at some point, perhaps start of next season.

Yeah without EMC and Wright he's unable to play his preferred style.

But there are currently at least 2 managers in the EPL who haven't got the personnel available to play their preferred formation/style but theyre ploughing on regardless.

So credit where its due, he recognised the issue and made the necessary changes and it's reaping dividends.

I’d like him to play attractive football. He came into a squad that hit a low due to disjointed coaching over several months from the time Lawrence left, right through to the Derby game and beyond.

I’m hoping this is just a hiatus as I see a lot of potential in this team. Once the defence is sorted we will be challenging for automatic promotion.

The defence is doing fine but regardless, challenging for automatics?
That's big gap to bridge mate, as we saw v Leeds.

This is the interesting thing for me. Can’t get EMC and Wright into the side without a shape change, but can we go back to 4ATB while we’re on this run?

Yeah, but its better conundrum than shall I play Eccles or Burroughs at wing back.

I’m still hopeful at this point that we have yet to see Lampard’s out and out style. We may have seen glimpses, but I’ll judge when he’s had a summer to work with the players.

He’ll have to change to be fair - we’ll need to be more dynamic in the PL.

Football is largely dire tbf, every now and then we string together a decent period of play, but you can't complain about the results. I'd just prefer for us to be more entertaining to watch.

Our best players are out injured so expect a change to shape and tactics, as soon as EMC came on yesterday, Grimes was picking him out with balls over the top, think one led to the Sakamoto header.

There’s a slight similarity with this team and Southgate’s England, in that both sides have plenty of - if not too many - options in certain attacking positions, but are held back by CBs who aren’t up to scratch.

Going 3ATB and/or playing two defensive midfielders can mitigate that, but the real question is how do we switch to a back four and get all the forward talent on the pitch…

I just saw it as something we were doing while we were missing EMC and Wright to play on the left. Southgate had no such issues and decided to commit multiple crimes against football anyway.

If your defenders aren't up to task having more of them on the pitch seems an odd way of mitigating that.

The logic behind it is really to give them smaller areas to cover. In practice, unless we play a flat back 5 it causes as many issues as it solves due to the wide CBs being terrified of defending the wide channels.

This is the same trap teams fall into with cramming their own boxes at corners.

I personally thought Robins was more like Southgate.

A man who could rally a bunch of players together but ultimately poor with tactics and substitutions. Both successful but the time was up.

Ironically, I think Frank will manage England after Tuchel.

For me, yes, change back to 4 ASAP. Basically all the stats show us being better in a 4, I think recent results are more due to Dovin and increased confidence than our shape.

I thought Robins was renowned as being a bit aloof and abrasive with the players tbh. Tactically I thought he was pretty good too, even if it often took a while to land on the killer setup. His in-game management was generally very good as well.

I actually don’t think we’ve been that bad on the ball.

The problem is a lack of creative personnel in midfield. We don’t really have a “progressor” in fact I’d go as far as saying we don’t have a player that naturally can play between the midfield and strikers.

We are set up to play with wide forwards rather than a 10 in behind the striker(s). We’ve just been very unlucky that both LWF have been injured at the same time meaning we’ve had to adapt. Still got the results though so fair fucks to Lampard and the coaching team.

FL has already shown he can set up a team to adapt to the players he has available. During games he has also adapted and made tactical decisions with positive effects.

This is purely down to he and his coaches ability to evaluate the individual quickly. He and his coaches are doing a fantastic job and although its not free flowing football its been very effective in terms of results. Performances will come once all are players are back and we get Grimes settled.

We have to give Lampard lots of credit for what he has achieved in three months, despite not having had Wright available to him at all and Sheaf and EMC out for extended periods.

We were two points clear of relegation when he arrived and now we are one point away from the playoffs.

We will play more attractive football when Wright and EMC are back. I’m looking forward to having them in the team with Grimes.

I am envisaging a change to 433 from Preston, especially as we have given Paterson a contract until the summer, that gives you a team of:
Dovin
MVE Thomas Kitching Bidwell
Torp Grimes Rudoni
Sakamoto Simms EMC

With Paterson, Raphael, Bassette and BTA to cover the forwards, Allen, Eccles and Paterson to cover midfield, Binks, Lati, Dasilva defence with Sheaf and Wright to come back into the team. As others have said who doesn't make the squad each week is going to be telling, I expect Raphael, Bassette, maybe Paterson to get a run out in the U21 today

Just pondering on this, when Sheaf and Wright return (fully fit) gives us:
Dovin
MVE Thomas Kitching Bidwell
Sheaf Grimes Rudoni
Wright Simms EMC

and a second XI which would be vaguely respectable:

Collins
Burroughs Lati Binks Dasilva
Eccles Allen Torp
Sakamoto Bassette Paterson

Wilson, Tyler, Howley, Raphael, BTA

Fully appreciate, other people might question the personnel i.e Binks over Kitching or BTA rather than Bassette, and as for the reserve goalkeeper debate... but the basic principle applies that when we switch to 433 that generally options improve and we have a reasonable second XI, looking at both teams though it is clear we do need some reinforcements in defensive areas to improve the quality of the team/squad/Deck.

That's incredibly harsh on Torp and Allen, who have been a big part of our form resurgence.

We shouldn't be looking to force certain players back into the team. We've looked better with the players that have been playing, and the results speak for themselves.

I'm very curious about how the next few weeks will go. It's been a very optimistisic time, but whilst we're now in touching distance of the playoffs, getting the correct team selection with everyone avaliable will be what makes or break us for the remainder of the season.

I was totally in the Robins camp and was gutted when he was sacked. When all was said and done I was really excited by Lampard’s appointment the one person I wanted. He will, if given time, take us to the next level I believe. Our main problem will be if a Premier league side come knocking and make an offer he can’t refuse in the meantime.

Comparisons to Southgate’s style of play are a bit premature. Once he adds a few more of his own signings to the “deck” then I think we will see a more attractive approach to our game.

If he stays for a while I think we could have a new legend in the making, here’s hoping

100% - I wouldn’t have got rid of Robins and felt a bit ‘meh’ about anyone other than Moyes, Potter or Cooper and that was frankly, unrealistic. Lampard was by far and away the standout candidate and the other runners and riders have struggled since (barring Eustace, somewhat).

This comparison to Southgate’s England Southgate is just dumb. The game we didn’t deserve to win was Wednesday.

Even against QPR, we were the most likely team to win the game. The games, we were the better team in every game we won, home and away.

The fact that we’ve done it without 3 of our best players really shows how much better coached the side is. As you say, add a few players to the group we should be able to carry this momentum into next season if we don’t go up via the playoffs. I’m optimistic that we’ll finish 5th and fancy beating Sunderland over 2 legs to get the playoff final, again. 3rd time lucky?

There are not many I would swap for Southgate, look how many prem jobs have been available and he doesn’t get a sniff the only one he got close to was Utd because Ashworth likes him, Southgate’s next job will be managing some football no mark like Qatar or Saudi Arabia.
