...that he has to pull up his shorts as far as possible before he takes those free kicks. Is it a nervous habit? does he do it for his fanboys/girls as a 'look at me'? - suggestions please?!?

I don't think it's a nervous habit. I don't think Ronaldo gets nervous. He thrives on the pressure!
Personally, I think it's probably more of a restriction thing. Be it him actually feeling less restricted or just a mental feeling of being less restricted!
It works for him whatever it is so why not keep doing it?
